Grace has never seen Jaws! (Only pieces here and there in the background, but never paid attention). Join us as we react to it together.) Elizabeth loves this movie, and is more than happy to watch it with her!
This is our “Movies With Mom” series, where we watch movies with moms, because moms tend to watch movies differently! When the kids are down for the night, it’s nice to unwind with a good movie. But it’s funny how your perspective changes …

The film is an actual masterpiece. If this film were released today for the first time, without any history or sequels or memes, it would still hold up. Having watched it in a theater back in the summer of ‘75, I still remember everything vividly, including the audience reactions…popcorn flying, people jumping out of their seats, people literally walking out of the the theater. It wasn’t just “good”. It was a masterclass on filmmaking from story to dialog to editing to casting. And of course, the music and score. A perfect film.

I love how she said beginning is unrealistic and there was a fatal great white attack in Sydney recorded in February and the great white grabbed a swimmer and was dragging him through the water for a good 30 seconds. Bit him in half just below the butt and then went back up grabbed the rest and took it underwater. You could hear him screaming. Very very eerily similar to this except you saw the shark a little bit. Realistically you would see the shark here but it's better that you didn't. Also there have been numerous times that remains of shark attack victims have been found days later and while they are generally nibbled on by other critters it's very common to find remains

Fun fact: the line “you’re gonna need a bigger boat” was never in the script. It was a line improvised by the actor in the moment. Fun fact #2: The several mechanical sharks used for filming had SO MANY mechanical problems that they could only film short scenes at a time; which is why they only showed it at the end. Spielberg even named the shark “Bruce” after his lawyer, who he said was always a pain in the ass. Fun fact #3: the Indianapolis story is a true story

According to the actor/writer who played Meadows in the film Carl gottlieb Roy scheider told him that it was 100% in the script and while Roy scheider did ad-lib some lines Roy himself said that this was not one of the lines and Carl has been saying that it was unscripted for decades but was corrected by scheider. If you look up the 2005 Jaws fest interview with benchley and Carl you can hear them talk about it and disprove that rumor

I'm sure the most well known tidbit about this movie has been mentioned a lot of times already, that the shark is barely seen because they had problems with the model, and so one of the effective parts of the movie was an accident. What I find much more interesting is that Quinn's actor was a legendary drunk and he was drunk most of the time on set. The scene with the chalk board scratching is him drunk. But legend has it that he was almost sober (more sober than anytime else in the procuction) in the talk on the boat, with the biggest feeding frenzy ever. That feeding frenzy really happened, btw, and as far as I know it's still the largest known.

The ending in the novel had the shark get stabbed with a harpoon to the belly and it died when it could no longer drag the barrels. The shark dies from anoxia (drowning). right? It was really weird. And she had a number of comments like that. "Wouldn't the shark eat it and then scavengers get the rest of it?", when they came across the remains of the first victim. Answer: yes, there is almost nothing left and it is being consumed by crabs. "Why are you picking the small paint brushes?!?" "if you weren't whistling you might be able to hear..." "C'mon, a WHOLE fish that has been sitting in the digestive tract for 24 hours?", like the shark couldn't have swallowed it whole right before it got caught and killed. While they were on the boat when Quint first gets the shark on the fishing rod, she said "I feel like we're all making big mistakes right now. We're all being really stupid", as if she has a better grasp on how to catch the shark. For as much picking apart of it as she did, I was surprised that she ended up liking it. @@SubterrelProspector

Sharks are the apex predator of the ocean. Sharks, especially great whites fear only three things…adult whales, Killer Sharks, and Dolphin pods. Humans are not animals that sharks fear. And they are opportunistic predators. They take the path of least resistance and actively seek the injured or weak. They also love the taste of seals. But if they’re really hungry, I wouldn’t bet my life on them being as afraid of me as I am of them.

It's an accomplishment all it's own. 3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off. 4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed and the movie needed something earlier. It works every time😱 5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen. 6. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish. 7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce. 8. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER. 9. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story. 10. I was in the Navy and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting any creature attaching you. 11. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody. 12. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including one of the mayor's kids.

Sharks are not sporadic feeders, they may eat once a month sometimes less and can actually go up to a year without feeding so they digest food slowly even though their stomach acid is quite potent

Interesting note is that few years ago when actress plays distraught mom who losing her son to the shark met her "son" at a restaurant where he worked as a general manager.

The reason you hardly see the shark is because they had continuous problems with the shark. In the end not seeing much of him worked.

The scene where the mother slapped Brodie was shot 13 times. She was really tagging him.

And ever since then people have been coming up to her and asking that she slap them like she did Brody. Sometimes she'd and sometimes she wouldn't.

The mayor was smart and ahead of his time. Because of this movie shark research shows us that these big fish are right off the shores all the time.

Great reaction video, this felt more genuine. I appreciated the focus on the film as opposed to overreacting to something (not that it is a bad thing, works for other channels and its entertaining).

Enjoying all your reactions very much. No matter the age of the movie you seem to have already acknowledged and embraced the practical effects along with the early tech effects. Most watch watchers are reacting to the differences of then and now. It's obvious that you are participating and curious. Probably you'll alway be !

You were right about the Man vs Man the chief had a childhood fear of water and he had to confront that in order to save themselves and the town. Man vs Nature of course is them vs Jaws. This particular shark was behaving out of the norm with its focused aggression.
