In Betty’s eyes, yes. Katherine, in that particular time period, was considered a liberal spinster who Wellesley decided no man would want, cause she was too old. Nevermind the actual truth of the matter.

Honestly, I don't blame Katherine. Just because Betty is married doesn't make her more superior than her own teacher.
@Miss_Myth
@Miss_Myth Жыл бұрын
Actually, Betty believed she was superior regardless. That her standing, family, etc and Ms. Watson's lack of those things made her better, and made the teacher less. She expected others to cowtow and almost be in awe of her, as if she were nobility. It's how she was raised. But she gets a wake-up call and a half throughout the movie.

@cortezconquistadorI think it should be but it’s not meant for others and I think that’s why some partners cheated cause they married cause it was the thing to do back then plus he or she came from a good background.

@cortezconquistador While I do agree that was part of it, I still think that Betty believed she was superior before the marriage. Even if she hadn't been engaged, I got the impression that she saw herself as someone of higher standing than Katherine, and the fact that Ms. Watson was a teacher, in a position of authority (supposedly) meant very little to her.

I can’t understand why she came back to school after she got married. She didn’t really want an education. She just wanted something to do until she got married. She’s married she didn’t need school anymore. She wanted to have children and be a mother and didn’t take her education seriously. That’s all fine but own it and don’t waste your classmates’ time with this nonsense. Some people are paying to be there.
@TheMagicAround
@TheMagicAround Жыл бұрын
I do not agree. She did take her classes seriously before marriage and I'm not sure that this one wanted to be a mother. She kind of believed that it MUST be so - marriage and stuff. Became bitter when her husband and marriage turned out to be not what she expected. Than she went on thinking how to fix her situation without checking with what her mom&society expected.
@animeaddict13

She probably expected to be given a free pass in her classes since she was married and her family was rich and well connected. She probably viewed her degree as more decorative than anything else.

@hadawson72268 I think that having a degree from that very school was a status as much as getting married. If I correctly recall, that was the school her mother attended too. A school for whealty girls who must accomplish this task before fully dive into a wife/mother life.

She wanted to retain her Queen Bee status. She wanted the validation, admiration, and attention from the other girls. Her fiance/Husband wasn't giving her much attention to begin with, she knew he was cheating, and she knew this was a society marriage. She knew her life would have no excitement if she was a stay at home wife. She knew she would always be alone internally. That's why she went back after getting married.

I know that Betty is the product of her mother's education and believes, but she's so brattly arrogant that I hoped the teacher slapped her. What is worse is that Connie stands for her in this occasion, and Betty is very mean and cruel with her later. Great cast!

she would never talk to a male professor like that. disgusting. that level of sociopathic rage against another woman never goes away. thats how misogyny works...you don't speak up to the people who are oppressing you, you take it out on the kindest woman who is trying to lift you up.sad. Hwood is completely unrealistic. her transformation in the movie would never happen in real life. she would have continued to belittle and bully the teacher, and getting all the cowardly girls on board.

Such a great movie. Intense scenes and incredible characters! There is so much to learn about life from each character and the ways they interact with each other. It's kinda sad to see people watch this and NOT see the value in it. I do think it may be something women will identify with more..but it's just great.

Well, the point of the story is that Katherine does not encourage her students not to get married; she encourages them to do what is their free choice. And as one of the students says in the course of the movie, if your free choice is getting married, that is OK. I just think that as far as Betty is concerned, her choice of marriage is not as "free" as she believes it to be, but is also due to parental pressure (as her mother says that instead of divorcing her husband for cheating, she should "work out things with him"). I like this movie, it's like a female version of Dead Poet's Society.

@@BrandyTexas214 In the movie, it's directly said that women were not able to go to college before, that things have gotten better. That was correct, but things still weren't great. Women couldn't have a bank account by themselves FFS. Things are better now than they were then, because so many fought for choice and autonomy. It's still not perfect, probably never will be, but we can see humanity's progress through history, appreciate it, and continue to make things better as we go. Glad you are happy, but what works for one never works for all. Having a choice matters.

All along, Betty was deeply insecure about her own situation, and the way she coped was to completely project it onto everyone else, whatever that entailed. Not okay, but once you've seen the movie, you start to see why she is the way she is. Good for Katharine to stick up to her! The movie shows viewers all the "shadows" of the repressed feminine across many characters, and this is one of them. Dangerous manipulation/projection, because of deep-seeded insecurity.

Honestly, I can understand both sides. If that really was the way the school and classes were allowed to be ran regarding married students, then thats the way it works. But for the same token, if you're treating school as your side-activity while you're not being a housewife, then by all means just drop out and save everyone's time. When two things cannot coexist without essentially hindering each other's function/values, they should not be forced to coexist.
