The opportunity for someone to buy any race-winning Formula One car is rare. But rare is an understatement when it comes to the opportunity to acquire iconic, race-winning Formula One cars offered direct from their former World Champion owner. On offer at our 2022 Monaco sale is The Nigel Mansell Collection, compromising five cars, two of which are amongst the most important F1 cars to be offered at public auction-his race-winning 1989 Ferrari 640 and the 1991 Williams FW14, the car with which Mansell won five races and which is known the world over as the ‘Senna Taxi.’ Watch this video to hear the man himself talk about his racing life and the importance that these two cars play within his illustrious career.

Nigel, thank you. I met you at your Collection on Jersey, on my birthday. You kindly gave my wife a kiss as a "present" for me 😆 We spent a few minutes candidly chatting. You remain my biggest hero in F1. I was at Silverstone in 1991, I saw you do that stunning quali lap, I saw your win. I saw you a few times since then too. You are one of the toughest competitors, physically and mentally, you deserved to be triple champion. And then to go on an dominate the Indycar championship in 1993. An amazing career, an amazing man. A HERO! Thank you.

Not sure if you will ever read this Nigel, but I'm going to say that I'm a Ayrton Senna fan, always have been. But of them all, you pushed Ayrton the most. Alain, to me, was always who Ayrton chased, but I believe it was you who pushed Ayrton to be the best, your talent and Ayrtons was incredible. Been following F1 since '85. My memories are tied to you and Ayrtons fights. What wonderful memories. Thank you.

@@danijelbratina I agree. He was. But I actually think it was really just timing over skill. His and Ayrtons skills and mindsets were strikling similar and that made for exciting races. The timing was Nigel held the F1 and CART championships. He won the CART championship before Alain Prost won his fourth championship. Timing won over skill on that score. But I'm digressing over that.

For me in terms of F1, it was watching my brother run 1960's slot cars with school friends.. I was about three years old. I never forget the sweet smell of the packaging when track sections were being assembled and the artistic drama of the packaging graphics fascinated me. Then seeing Grand Prix one evening starring James Garner on T.V., really put it all in perspective as a must do aspiration. Steve McQueen's film Le Mans followed and directed my interest firmly toward sports car racing and Porsches. But both racing categories were my calling and as with millions of other unknown observers, never came close to happening. I've had to settle for 1/8 scale on-road RC model car racing.

I remember standing in the doorway to the Lotus garage before the ‘83 Silverstone GP as the mechanics fitted a new loom (or similar) to Nigel’s car. It was pretty late at night but who was sat on the floor in the corner taking an interest and offering encouragement? Nigel of course, dedicated team player to the end.

There are times we all reflect on our lives, the highs and lows. For me, some of those highs were at Silverstone in the late 80s and early 90s watching Big Nige, Red 5, winning infront of his adoring crowd. Union Jacks were in their hundreds, the noise was deafening and the crowds immense. 87 and 92 were ultimate highs. Precious, memories of, for me, the greatest racing driver we've ever had. Thank you Nigel.

First saw F1 live at silverstone in 1992, when I was 19, took my dad didnt know what we were doing, slept in the car saturday night at the track under a tree, it rained all night, got up about 6am, no wash, no breakfast, just started walking around the track and eventually found our seats at the becketts grandstand, £100 for each seat which was expensive back then. Mega fan of Nigel and it was magical to see him win that race, and remember phoning mum as Nigel did his run down lap and podium so excited shouting down the phone. Excellent times, will stay with me forever.

WHAT a MOVE. Hamilton tried the same in 2016 but it ended up badly. Meet the man in 2006 in Silverstone for the GP Masters Series, what a humble and nice chap. Thanks! I missed to have a picture with him, but it was great even though the car failed to Nige. As others stated before The Racer, The Warrior THE Never Give Up man, a racer with integrity and not one to crash or pass. Self made man that deserved 3 titles, no matter what hatters would say. Nigel had a rough go of with the British media in his championship year as he was deemed not as brilliant or mysterious as some of his rivals, and I always felt bad for the way he was treated by The Cartel. It was pretty typical for the British media to cheer a Brit on until he became successful, and then to rubbish him. I got to know him a little that season and when he clinched the championship in Budapest I made a bee-line to the Williams garage as soon as my live journalism job was over. When he saw me he . . . gave me a hug and I was elated for him. I went on to the press room smelling of champagne! Whatever his detractors want to say, to me he was probably the bravest guy I ever saw drive in F1 . . .

In Senna's own words Nigel has been the only driver he met in F1 who could, with equally or extremely closely performing cars, beat him from time to time. Mansell is often described as a bit of a crazy and beasty driver who was just pushing the car til it broke into pieces but if you ask to the engineers and technicians that worked with him in Ferrari you will hear a totally different story. I've heared Cesare Fiorio say in an interview that Mansell has been the best he had in F1 (and he had Prost too). He said Nigel was not only the fastest but also the most mechanical and grip sensitive driver he had in Ferrari, incredibly gifted and determined but always connected and carefully listening to every part of the racecar. His courage, aggressive racing style and daring to stay constantly on the edge of the car's limit earned him his fame of mad driver but truth is that he was a grip genius as fewest drivers have been in F1 history (probably he's the only one on par with Ayrton here) He was always among the 2-3 fastest drivers of the paddock, ferociously determined in races, simply unbeliavable in qualy. Pure Legend.

@@kekepiket9153 Sorry but I really don't get you point about years from 1980 to 1985. 1980-84 he was at Lotus. One of worst cars in the paddock. 1985 was his first year in Williams and he won 2 races, same as his teammate Keke Rosberg. I said he was among 2-3 fastest drivers in the paddock. A driver can be one of the fastest out there even without being able to win a single race (Senna @ Toleman may ring a bell here) If you refer to fastest only as finish line results and qualy (that I was not btw) he obviously could not be there on top of his potential with that miserable Lotus car. While as soon as he jumped on better but still very unripe FW10 he started winning races.

A proper old school driver who no matter where he started on the grid you could guarantee that he would drive the wheels off his racing car to get to the front and more than often did. And it makes me sick when you here some of these so called F1 superstar drivers of today when their on their radio’s complaining about the least trivial concern with their cars, if they would spend more of their time trying to work around the problem and concentrate on going faster than trying to get a computer to sort it out.

On his day, Nigel was up there with Senna… I’ve never seen a driver overtake so effortlessly through a field, Monaco being a prime example as to where it was never meant to be possible.. Senna and Mansell could carve through a field like no other… That said, they were both 100% balls deep when it came to commitment and seldom gave an inch on track.. They wouldn’t last two minutes today, as they would make Crashverstappen look almost passive in comparison and get penalties more often than Manchester United did in the early 2000’s ..! I believe we had an era back in the late eighties early nineties that will never be repeated… Where rules were secondary to the actual racing, where racing was the entertainment, not sound bites, not hot dog stands and who is to blame replays.. It was about going all out for a win, respect where it’s due and not when it’s has not been earned.. Just look at the Moss era, some places if you were to lose it, you were almost guaranteed to shuffle off this mortal coil, many racers of moss’s era gave the ultimate sacrifice.. I believe the Senna and Mansell era were the last of that generation that lived with death over their shoulders and learned to respect but ultimately ignore it.. Today, it is a different game, where a lot of races are almost decided before they even start… I’d like to see safe refuelling, the ability to ramp up the wick to what ever a team is willing to risk and ditch fuel economy and tyre management, like wtf has that to do with what should be ultimately flat out racing. You either want the fastest drivers to win, or the most consistent at fuel and tyre management.. If you think the latter is progress, I’d say watch a few races during the late 80 early 90’s.. Tell me if you actually fell asleep, as often I do today.. You didn’t watch 20 laps of a race in the late 80s early 90s and think, yeah I know who is going to win.. You had to watch the whole race, or you mostly likely wouldn’t have a clue…

I just hope whoever gets those cars, they will make them available to public to enjoy and get familiar with history and importance of those cars for F1 history and sport (first semi-auto gearbox in F 640, and part of the most iconic moment and picture GB 91 "taxiing Senna" with FW-14), counting down only 7 days to go...

Nigel Mansell. The man that sold his home to continue his racing career. He really believed in himself to do something like that. I was heartbroken when he did not win the Indianapolis 500 that he was leading when that final caution flag came out and allowed everyone to catch up, ultimately ending with someone else winning.. I can’t remember who it was that one that race at Indianapolis that year, but I do remember that Nigel Mansell should have .. but that’s racing, ain’t it
