If it's worth it I wonder if Keith will refurbish the live centre quill? Too bad the large end-stock doesn't split between the base and top like the small one does. That would be much easier to add a shim between the base and top. Come to think of it, in my mind, refurbish both end-stocks.

Like others i would suggest shimming between the top casting and bottom casting for height (after scraping the base to the bed and to level). Turcite will just make the tailstock too slippery on the bed. There are materials similar to Turcite used to fill gouges in the bed if you want to use a fill material but I am unsure of using it to cover the entire base bottom.
@billbryant7194
@billbryant7194 7 ай бұрын
Yes, that is where I would have expected the shimming to go. Putting in the ways would expose it to wear and the need to replace it at some point in the future.

@@billbryant7194 I thought of the same way to shim it, but either way is good because Turcite lasts a very long time.
@johnspathonis1078
@johnspathonis1078 7 ай бұрын
Agreed. Also this would allow shims to correct any out-of-parallel between the quill axis and the headstock axis in the vertical plane. Correction is also required in the horizontal plane.
@russkepler
@russkepler 7 ай бұрын
@@johnspathonis1078 what is usually suggested is to scrape the tailstock base level with the lathe bed both ways. That let's you simply shim across the top of the base to get the quill on the spindle axis height. You don't want any gaps in the shim due as the clamping forces holding the top down would distort the top when you clamped the tailstock to the lathe ways. When I scraped in the tailstock on my Monarch it took a .006" shim to get the quill back up to the spindle height.

Was afraid when you picked up that tailstock without the clamping bolts in there that the base was going to come apart from the top casting. On my smaller tailstock thats what holds them together except for the side to side adjustment bolts that just push on the casting. So glad that wasn't the case.

Merry Christmas! I was wondering about the purpose of the shims on the plug in the back. I'd check if the key was trapezoidal rather than square & the shims were to set the clearance to control rotational slop in the quill. I.e may need different shims for different quill. Don't know why they'd do this but don't see another reason for the shims. Rather than shimming the tailstock height you could get Clark to cast you one & machine it to fit - be a neat project for us to watch.😊

I can't figure out who would want a fixed center in their tailstock. Who would want a lathe without an ability to use a drill or a boring bar in his tailstock. There has got to be a way of exchanging the tooling. Maybe it just screws in. I guess that's not important any more. Great job combining the two tailstocks into one.

I'd be concerned that an overly-casual shimming operation to lift the tailstock will fail - you'll have no easy way to adjust the centering up/down, which might[?] be troublesome in a similar fashion to the left-right centering necessary for correcting subtle taper cutting? Admittedly the usual cutting tool position up/down would take care of a small error, but... Perhaps this is just my tendency to OCD kicking in?
