Keith, I am so glad to see the 1" carbide end mill being used. I paid a whopping price of $1.00 for it. I knew you would have a holder to put it to use. I see you used a rag to hold it being as it is razor sharp, and does a great job milling your tail stock base. As always, great content. Thank you. Don

Also under heavy load the tailstock center bends down a bit so it is better to have the tailstock center a bit high.

Actually under a heavy cut the work piece will push up on the center as the work piece tries to ride up on the cutting tool.

Absolutely love the “no measure “ method of aligning! TLBR system- that looks about right. No prints, center finder, digital map, just do it 😂. Only critique is that a round over on the outboard edges will prevent blood stains on your machine in the future 😮…. Enjoyed the process as usual, looking forward to seeing chips flying, the colors are amazing!

Before you paint it...take a needle scaler to that block and dimple the snot out of the surface to make it "matchish" the cast look, maybe even do some round chamfering on the edges Very cool addon/modification! Keep em coming!!!!

Keith, im always impressed with just how much you get done on each episode. You take on these very large projects (like the Diresta bandsaw), and im never disappointed with the progress we get to watch and the results we see. This tailstock i think has been a great example for people to see that restoration isnt always a game of exacts, but rather one of creative solutions. Plus we get to see real challenges solved with real machine tools. Whether its the upcoming castings for under the ways, or machining your 1" spacer and its land on the bottom of the tailstock, you always put together great demonstrations of machinist solutions to shop challenges. I really meant it when i said never disappointed!

I was about to do the same to my biggest lathe, but i saw a video from the guys at Festo and had the idea to put an air feed to the thing and it worked. I can push the tailstock with a finger when the line's activated. It's a bit of a hassle cause i have it shoot some oil as well every time, but it's worth it on account on that ease of use. Before hand, i even strained my back once trying to push that behemoth. That said, Keith here's to a fruitful 2024 and good tidings to you and yours!!!

That is a feature I wish I had on mine, it is right at the breakover point of "nice to have" and "must have." Ginger must have had his turn with the orange cat brain cell that day 🙂. They really are smarter than most would give them credit for, and they can be real sweethearts ... or really conniving, like the one that is currently giving me the gargoyle treatment because I haven't filled the feed dish yet ... Dad would say "He isn't stupid, he's just smart enough to make you think he is." Looking forward to finally seeing this lathe in action.

The M and CM series lathes from the 40's used that same style tail stock as what you have there from what little I know of them. (I have a CM 20 with a factory cast 30" swing). From 1200 miles away it looks damn near identical. I suspect they used many common parts over the years on newer different models. Anyway looks like you will have a nice functioning tail stock no matter what flavor of lathe it came from. Cheers

Hypothesis: if he goes to scrape in the turcite, the inital bluing print will show heavy contact on the innermost length of the flat ways. This due to the Vee way being sloped where the turcite is applied and the turcite lifting that side of the tailstock slightly less.. then again the epoxy may have negated all of that, in fact potentially automatically fixing any deviation in flatness... things that make you go hmmm.

23:00 Going back a couple of centuries to the 'good ol' days when no-one cared about interchangeable parts. Not a criticism, btw, I have done the same thing myself! 33:50 Well done, Keith! For all my previous nervousness about using Turcite, you've proven me wrong. I wouldn't accept this amount of misalignment on a watchmaker's lathe, but on a big boy it will do just fine.
