This time on MonarchsFactory we revisit the story of the Seven Against Thebes, couched comfortably between the stories of Oedipus and Antigone. Honestly, y'all, Thebes is a mess.
The source for this story is spread across a half dozen texts.
You can find a translation of one of those texts here: www.theoi.com/Text/AeschylusS...

I guess being a badass is genetic in mythohistorical Greece. Tydeus was the father of our boy Diomedes (of Iliad fame). To quote Helenus on Diomedes "... that savage spearman, ruthless deviser of panic rout, the one I reckon to be mightiest of the Achaeans. Not even Achilles, leader of men, caused us so much terror, and they say he is the son of a goddess. But this man's rage goes too far, and no man can match him in his fury." (book 6, lines 97-101) Also, Athene definitely liked this family. She wanted to make Tydeus immortal, and she totally had a crush on Diomedes; "Diomedes, son of Tydeus, delight of my heart..." (book 5, line 826)

Kuru is native to New Guinea. That wouldn't have been even remotely close to be being a concern.
@sadiemcc9363
@sadiemcc9363 4 жыл бұрын
@@Resistant396 I'm pretty sure Kuru was only native to New Guinea because no where else in the world did people eat human brains. Could be wrong, but in any case, other prion diseases like Mad Cow and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease are all around the world.
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 4 жыл бұрын
@@Resistant396 Sadie McC is correct, Kuru is 'native' to New Guinea because the particular form of cannibalism was native to the country, not because Prion diseases are native to it. Had the practice been more widespread you would see Kuru wherever that particular practice was common. Most Prion diseases, including Kuru, are caused by misfolded Prion Protein (PrP), which somehow is able to 'infect' other proteins around it causing them also to misfold. Why it misfolds, and how it causes other PrP molecules nearby to do so is to my knowledge unknown. What this *does* mean however is that most of the Prion diseases, such as CJD, GSS, FFI and Kuru are effectively the same disease, at least in the way the disease progresses. Ther are probably differences in how it originally occurs and spreads in each organism though. In all cases though they are neurological diseases, all are progressive, all are universally fatal, and none have cures....
@Resistant396
@Resistant396 4 жыл бұрын
@@alganhar1 The problem is that kuru and other Prion diseases REQUIRE that the eaten brain be infected with misfolded proteins. If those proteins aren't present, it's impossible to get the disease from cannibalism. Otherwise every living being would get the disease regardless of whether they came in contact with it or not. Cannibalism doesn't CAUSE kuru or any other disease, it only spreads it. The same could be said for any transmissible disease, though.
