I visited here for a 5 day retreat when I was just 18 years old, and had already been accepted to the local seminary. I spent 5 years at St. Charles Seminary, enjoyed my time, but then left, married, and am currently raising a family. I remember my time at Holy Cross Abbey very fondly, walking through the beautiful fields, visiting the Shenandoah River, praying with the monks in the abbey, listening to meditations during meals, and reading and praying on my own. It truly was an enriching experience. I would encourage anyone to make a visit and spend some very special time with the monks, nature, and God.

I entertained the thought of entering the monastic life in the mid 1990s. Today, I feel dawn, again, to entering the monastic life.

With the videos of monks, nuns, brothers and sisters, and Im in my early 60s, there is a quiet longing for the peace these God gifted places bring amidst the ceaseless 'noise' of secular life.

For two years my late wife and I were Lay Cistercians at this very monastery. There is something about this "place" I wish everyone could experience. If you are discerning a vocation, may I suggest looking into this Abbey?
