My 2008 2.0 litre Mondeo refused to start after I had stopped outside a shop. It had been taking more cranking than it should have over a few previous weeks. Some sure start from the rac rescue man got it going eventually and you could see copious amounts of air in the diesel pipe going to the pump. My local garage found the hose coming from the tank was sucking air so they replaced it. The car is starting fine now and unless it's my imagination I think it even goes better. I also had the battery changed for good measure. Thank you for doing the video, i thoroughly enjoyed it as you were bang on with your method of diagnosis.

I began to have intermittent starting problems on my 2008 2.0TDCi Mondeo (152000 miles) last year but things got much worse a few weeks ago. I followed your reasoning and went through all the checks that you suggest and came to the conclusion the starter was at fault. New starter motor and the difference is unbelievable. The engine really turns over at speed now and starts first pop every time and has been that way for three weeks and dozens of starts. I really didn't notice how the old starter motor had deteriorated, as the decline in cranking speed is gradual and doesn't attract your attention until it finally gets too slow for the engine management's requrements to start as you mention. I'll strip the old starter to see what's deteriorated, but probably worn brushes/commutator and burned and high resistance solenoid contacts. Many thanks Nigel, saved me a lot of bother and expense.

I had the same surprise. You expect a motor to either work or not. To have one that still turned over but with high current draw is strange and through me off the scent for awhile. The final clue was measuring only 8v across the motor where there should be at least 11v. Thanks for watching. Well done with the fix.

Hi Nigel, great video, i have been having exactly the same problem, but a few months ago i noticed that the +ve terminal on the battery lug was getting very hot when i had all the electrics turned on. changed the lug and this sorted out that problem, but now a few months later i have a starting problem, it fails to start first time every morning, it's not cold weather, but it will start after 3 or 4 attempts. the starter motor sounds like it's struggling. so tomorrow i will clean up the ground connection and put some copper slip on it before tightening it up. thanks for a great video, keep up the good work

@mac4boys541
@mac4boys541 3 жыл бұрын
The earth connection problem is common on ALL Fords from this era and terminal design. Fiesta Focus Mondeo. Pull the battery box and air cleaner, this will give you access to the earth points on the chassis rail and gear box, there are big fat wires and smaller wires. my mk2 focus had at least 3 or 4 in this area. Unbolt and clean EVERY connection then reattach and cover in corrosion inhibitor of choice( grease, petroleum jelly etc) I also ADD another aux cable from the frame rail back under the air box back to the earth point on the strut tower next to the battery to make a better earth path. You will be amazed at what other electrical issues will now disappear .
@NigelEaland

Unfortunately the earth lug on the chassis was not the problem. The starter motor was failing and drawing far too much current and that is why that connection was getting warm. Have a look at my starter motor change video where this story finishes. Thanks for the comment though as I’ve read that mk3 Mondeos sometimes had an earthing problem.

Hi there. Great vid. Very clear information. Really helpful. My only reservation is the dismissal of an injector issue. Poor starting can sometimes be down to the leak off element, inside the injector being faulty. Really common, on common rail engines. Especially that age. You could even have the issue so bad that it barely starts, but once started. They can show very little, to no symptoms at all. Eg normal MPG, engine performance and no smoking. I’ve changed literally 100’s of these injectors for this exact fault. But still, thank you very much for taking the time make this video. 👍

This kind of car diagnostics performed by "hands on", experience, knowledge and human resonation is by far lost in newer generations of mechanics nowadays. So many car mechanics only look at what "the computer says"🙄 Resulting in expensive and unnecessary changing of parts in many cases.

You are quite right. When I did this the garage had guessed it was the starter motor but was not sure. I’m an engineer, I don’t guess I diagnose. Unbelievably helpful!! I've had real slow cranking of the engine and thought that there was something draining the battery. I got the local garage to replace the battery in spite of their protestations that there was nothing wrong with the starting. It still never turned over like a normal engine and has got gradually slower with the lower temperatures outside. Now, it's hit around zero degrees outside and the engine barely turns over and doesn't start. Battery out and charging overnight. I'll go and clean up that negative earth on the body and hopefully that helps! Many thanks.

Hi Nigel. Just bought a 2008 2 litre diesel. Had problems with it turning over. Took three or four seconds. Battery was nackered. It was the original battery from 2008. That's replaced. Turns over straight away now. However, when it turns over is is extremely choppy for about five minutes. It turns an stutters and almost seems like it will konk out. I have to keep the key turned and hold it when starting to ensure it turns. Anyway once it's running it's just very choppy and noisy got a few minutes. The only way I can describe it is like an irregular heart beat. It's ticking along but every few seconds the engine kind of jumps and it stutters. The engine is also quite loud if I drive it like this for the first five minutes. Now after five minutes it's fine. If I take it on motorway it drives like a dream so it's not fuel starvation like you said. It's just very annoying. Only seems to be issue when it's cold and started. My mechanic had a quick look. No engine light or code. I don't want what to do. I want to get it sorted it's definitely not running correctly when cold. What do you think?
@NigelEaland
@NigelEaland 5 жыл бұрын
It seems to me there are three possibilities. Glow plugs, air in the fuel line or a poor injector. The first two are easy to check as shown in the video. Given that it is quite cold at the moment I would suspect glow plugs or the relay that feeds them. Checking injectors is more complicated. Search you tube for inject leak off test.

Hi Nigel, I have the same problem on my car " Ford Mondeo Mk4 2.0 TDCI" It has air into that pipe that you showed in the video. About 1 month ago the car start loosing power and I couldn't increase the revs above 2500. At this point I suspected that I should do the service and in the next week I've done it, but this did not fix the problem. Next step I found a error code P0088 "Fuel pressure regulator" and I've decided to replace the sensor. I've been to a garage to replace that sensor, the guys from there...replace it, but when they took the sensor off from it place, the engine or pump loose the pressure.. they've been trying for about 5 hours to start the engine "engine Cranks but won't start ". I don't really know if the air bubbles from that pipe have been there before this or not...but what I know is, that the engine was starting easily before changing that sensor. Now the engine Cranks but not starting at all. Looks to be the same problem like your car "air bubbles ", but the difference between is that your car is starting and mine not. Can you please help me with some advices ? Thanks in advance.
@NigelEaland
@NigelEaland 4 жыл бұрын
The air in the fuel line will definitely stop the car from starting. You need to find where the air is getting in. Feel the joints as I did to see if diesel is leaking working your way back from the fuel pump. If they are dry go under the car and check the filter drain valve and the housing are tight and there is no evidence of diesel dripping. Finally attempt to prime the fuel line as I showed with the hand pump. Once there is only a little air in the system it should start and clear itself.

@@NigelEaland i suspected that maybe from that sensor something is wrong, maybe it is not on it's place. What do you think about that ? Or maybe the high pressure pump ? And i have one more question for you. This type of car has a fuel pump inside the tank ? And probably is not pumping enough fuel to the line ? Yesterday i tried for hours to prime the fuel but i still couldn't do something with that bubbles from that transparent pipe... And when i prime fuel i take out of the system lots of big bubbles and it didn't stop in all this time. Thanks for help again.
@NigelEaland
@NigelEaland 4 жыл бұрын
Pintilei Alexandru there is no pump in or near the fuel tank. The engine fuel pump sucks the fuel but it can’t do it If there is air in the low pressure line. If you have air then you see a small amount of diesel where it is leaking. It could be that air was introduced when the sensor was changed and that the line has not been primed properly. To move forward you first need to get that air out of the line.

Also when I engage aditional heating(webasto) and leave It for a couple of minutes to heat up It starts regulary in a sec. I changed the battery, I changed all 4 heaters and checked the started and everything is ok. What Could possibly be the issue? The car drives great, no problem whatsoever.

Go and have a look at my video about changing the starter motor. My poor starting was the starter motor and I changed batteries before I realised what the problem was. When you say it does it in slow motion I assume you mean that the engine turns over slowly when cold. If that is the case then it points to either the starter motor or the battery or the connections between the two. If you can measure the voltage across the starter motor while the engine is turned over. You should see at least 10 volts. Do the same with the battery. If you see less than that and there is quite a difference between the two then you have a fault.

POOR STARTING SOLVED - I have finally resolved the starting issue on my Mondeo. Doing some late night research on the Internet I found a web page that described the voltage drops you could expect on the starter motor circuit. The starter motor should see about 11v on cranking and the drop from the battery to the starter motor on both the negative and positive sides should be less than 0.4v. The voltage drops I measured are way to high and is a sign the starter motor is drawing far too much current. Just a general comment, based on years playing with boats. Funny when you said issues with slow starting...my instant thought was the negative side. I would add an actual heavy negative lead to one of the starter motor bolts to bypass the puny ground system. Wow, i dislike the idea of a ground so much. Every high draw system should always have both positive and negative leads running directly to it.

I agree as I also play a lot with boats. I believe the mk3 Mondeo had a known weakness with poor connection to the chassis. The issue was my starter motor drawing far two much current. The codes don’t tell us much. Have a look at both my videos of how the CAN system works and how to scan the car. The codes translate to U0401 and U0416. Both the ECM and the Dynamic Control modules are reporting loss of communication from a sensor. Buy a diagnostic connector and download Forscan. The Forscan program will pinpoint the problem.

Sounds like water getting into the ABS sensors’ cabling or connectors. You need to scan the car for fault reports using Forscan. It will tell which wheel to look at. If the car thinks it’s unsafe to drive it won’t start.

Update on the Mondeo. I've had the starter motor out and there is no debris from the clutch in it, so that's good. Most of the starting issues have gone away except for the first start in the morning. At the end of the video I said I was going to check the other connections to the starter motor to see where volts are lost. My battery has 12.6v across the terminals before start, on cracking it drops to 9.6v. I have further losses on the red positive cable to the starter motor of 0.8v. The battery negative terminal to chasis connection losses 0.4v and the chasis to engine connection losses a further 0.4v. All these losses are due to high current and a small amount of connection and cable resistance. If you do the maths the losses amount to 1.6v and hence 8v appears across the starter motor on start. I'd be grateful if someone can post similar readings from a good Mondeo to compare. One last thing. I've found that turning the ignition on for 5 seconds, five times and then go for a start it fires up first time in the morning.

That cap on the fuel line from the pump is not for releasing air; is a valve for measuring the pressure. Under the cap is a valve similar like those on the wheels.
@NigelEaland
@NigelEaland 4 жыл бұрын
Really? That valve is on the low pressure side before the fuel pump so I don’t follow what pressure would be measured. I’m not clear what the valve is for. I assumed it was for a garage to fit a suction pump to bleed the lines. Either way I didn’t mess with it and bled my lines in a different way using a hand pump connected to the return pipe. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
@JoitaConstantin
@JoitaConstantin 4 жыл бұрын
Nigel Ealand Yes, is on low side, but if the pump from the tank is not pumping properly from that point you can measure the pressure. Is a Schrader valve. In theory should be also on high side. For example on my mk1 petrol mondeo I have it also, and helped me once to diagnose the non return valve from the fuel pump. Anyway, you did a great job. Thank you for sharing.

That’s how it should be. It’s a glow plug test, it doesn’t indicate the glow plugs are on. If the test fails then that light will remain on. The other lights that go out after about 3 seconds is the same period the glow plugs are on. The other thing to note is that the glow plugs are only needed to start the engine when it is very cold. hi nigel, sorry to bother you again. I want to ask a question, maybe you have an idea. I checked the glow plugs and it's constantly getting 8.5 volts. When I turn the key, it gives 12.5 volts. but normally it should be 0 volts. I checked the fuse box and relay, it works fine. but it constantly gives 8.5 volts and 60 amp fuse blows. do you have an idea?
@NigelEaland
@NigelEaland 2 жыл бұрын
@@yunusturan1220 hello again. You have a fault but it should be easy now to work out where it is by a logical process of elimination. The fault is between the glow plug 60A fuse(F4) and the glow plugs. There are only two possibilities, the glow plug control unit has failed or there is a short in the wiring harness between the fuse and the control unit or the control unit and the glow plugs. Work backwards from the glow plugs. There’s a multi-way plug that you can disconnect them. Measure the volts on this plug. If you still have 8.5v then work back to the control unit checking cable for damage. At the control unit disconnect the plug. Pin 4 is the power from the fuse and should have 12v. Pins 1, 2, 6 & 7 go to the glow plugs and should have 0v. Pin 5 is chassis and 0v. Pins 3 and 8 are from the engine management. Assuming all readings are correct I would accuse the glow plug control unit. Good luck.

Eric Ongoro if the engine turns over slowly then the engine management will stop it from starting. Measure the voltage across the battery and then across the starter motor while trying to start. You should see about 10v across the starter. If the battery is good but you have less than 10v across the starter motor then the motor is drawing far too much current. There are two possible reasons, either the starter motor has failed or the starter ring has filled up with clutch dust and jammed the motor, this happens when the dual mass flywheel bearing has failed and the clutch plate disintegrates.

Hi Nigel ever come across a problem with the high beams flickering on and off I can hear the clicking in the glove box
@NigelEaland
@NigelEaland 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom. There is a relay/ fuse panel that sits under the glove box. You can move the carpet and drop it down. What you are hearing is the main beam relay chattering on and off. This is most likely to be a loose connection of the control wire from the high beam switch which makes or breaks with vibration as you drive along. Looking at the wiring diagram the main beam switch control goes to two places, the instrument panel blue light and the relay below the glove box. Firstly you could drop the fuse box and make sure the relay is in place and waggle the cable loom to see if you can provoke the fault. Secondly if you drive along and you hear the relay clatter and the blue light on the instrument panel flickers then it’s a bad connection on the main beam switch. You might be able to get your hand on the cable loom on the steering and provoke the fault that way. Good luck.

It’s hard to say as there can be many reasons why a car fails to start. The video shows how I made a process of examining, testing and eliminating various parts leaving just the suspicion that the starter motor was at fault by the voltage measurements I made. Have a look at my second video about replacing the starter motor. If you or the garage can measure the voltage across the starter motor and it reads less than say 11v then the starter motor is drawing far too much current.
