I loved creating this soft pastel painting of some lovely pansies from one of the lessons in The Pastel Workbook by Jackie Simmonds.
This is a video that has its full content on my Patreon page, but I wanted to share a speed demo here on the main Monet Cafe' Channel as well.
I highly recommend this book to any beginner pastel artist, or even the more experienced artist. It is loaded with a wealth of information that will surely help you to improve and grow.
Happy Painting!
The book is getting a little hard to come by, but here are some links that might have it still available. Also, when someone becomes a patron on my Patreon page they have access to all of my lessons from the book along with photos of the pages as I work.
Here is a link to the book from Thrift Books:

Thanks for your awesome pastel painting classes. This image I made like between 2012/14 but I found it somewhere else maybe in a book or magazine. This is a beautiful motive to do.

I love this Artist'...! What is it about this Artist that is seen, but unseen; when we apply this, or any technic to our work. Noting can be so disappointing; even a moment of heartbreak. I have felt this to the point of accepting that I'm nothing more than an art lover, rather an artist. Well, if you give up, your love for art is in question :) As I've said before, "your lightest darks, are darker, than your darkest lights." Think in 3's - there is light, a shade and a shadow. But!, it is the same on your canvas... If you're painting a landscape, the top of your canvas will be light, the middle will be a shade and the lower half, (foreground) dark. Depending on the direction of light. Myself, when drawing, I use 3 sets of 3's ; 3 lights, 3 med., 3 shades of darks. Looking at a ball, I use 3 shades in the light area, 3 mid-range, then 3 in the dark areas. This arrangement will keep you to the rule... "your lightest darks, are darker, than your darkest lights." Reflected light is darker in value, than any other lights on top ;)❤

There is another method other than charcoal and tracing, there is also a grid method, www.griddrawingtool.com/Step5.aspx where you can upload a picture and have a grid applied to it, if you draw the grid to measurement on your drawing surface, you can pretty much freehand the drawing as ti should appear in the grid squares, I use this for practice to get proportions correct, then erase the grid and you have your drawn picture ready to paint.

Yes, I use that technique often if painting a pet or a person portrait and also if something is very large. Thanks for that feedback!

Whew! Thanks for the Thriftbooks.com tip. The $13 version on Amazon went up to around $46 since you recorded this video. Anyhoo, was able to find it for just over $10 (with tax and shipping) on the ThriftBooks site. TY! :) And thanks too for the inspiring video lesson--even the speedpaint version helps me learn. :)

Yes, I noticed that the Amazon price went up. It’s a good thing you snagged a copy for yourself because looks like it’s going to be in even more short supply. Score!
