I spent some time on the J. Luda website a while back, and noticed they have a fabulous range of hues and values -- 756 individual ones! 35 hues, each having 21 different saturations and values. But I found their site quite difficult to shop, and most colors were not in stock (today for instance, only 222 colors are available on the site). A color chart, even if it just showed the 35 main hues, would be of tremendous help. And it would be great if the colors could be backordered; when I emailed they said they would make colors to order, but there's no way to order ones that are not in stock. I also would love to see them offer full sets per hue (like Blue Earth does). I'm a little confused as to why there's not more "V" colors in their darks set (V being the darkest value of the color). I see some labeled "FK" and "GL" which is not yet explained on the site. I know they are a very small company -- and I understand that, I really do (my own website desperately needs upgrading!) but I do hope they will maybe hire a web designer to add some of these enhancements and explanations to the website!

I’m new here and really like your work. I started in watercolour and your channel has me interested in pastels. So I purchased a small set of soft pastels to try it out. I wish I knew photo shop! Is this something Is this something I could learn online?
@monetcafe6 ай бұрын
Great Cindy!! Just remember to play and have fun at first. Pastels have some techniques that take time, but so worth it. You don't need photoshop for punching up color like this. There are lot of apps that will allow you to do this. Many phones allow editing photos for saturation, and there is an app call Snapseed that will allow for lots of photo editing techniques. :)

So lovely. Are these pastels as soft as Great American Pastels or more like Terry Ludwig Pastels? Do they have the same color saturation as these? Thank you. I love the underpainting technique.
@monetcafe6 ай бұрын
Hi Rosalie, they are as soft as Terry Ludwigs with great color saturation. They aren't quite the same texture as Great Americans... which is fine with me because GA's are not my favs.

Pastelmat paper is m'y go to paper. I can tell pastels blend beautifully on it with alcohol. I guess it is due to the pastels rather than to the paper

can you use pastel and alcohol on canvas?
@monetcafe5 ай бұрын
I have had some success in painting with Pastels on canvas by applying coats of clear gesso to the surface. Be sure to use clear gesso and not regular gesso because clear gesso has little bits of sand and works great as a do it yourself Pastels surface. I have to apply two or three coats of the clear gesso to counteract the texture of the canvas surface. The final painting does come out textural with quite a bit of pastel fall off, but this technique can work, even though it's not one of my favorites. Hope that helps!

It would be helpful if you gave less expensive options for beginners. The pastels you reference in your videos are all prohibitively priced. For me, I feel defeated before I’ve even started since I’m not using the “right” color/brand.
