Today’s guest is Jared Dillian, the editor of The Daily Dirtnap, a daily market newsletter for investment professionals.
Jared’s back on the podcast to talk about his book, No Worries: How to live a stress-free financial life, which just released yesterday. Jared talks about the 80/20 rule applied to personal finance, his “no worries” approach to investing, which he calls the awesome portfolio, and I bet you’ll be surprised by which asset has performed best since 2000.
We also get Jared’s take on the market today. He touches on inflation, private equity, the bond market and more.

I will say that small things in terms of well-being (making bed) are not the same as small things in finance. In fact, a lot of research shows, small things drive a lot of life enjoyment (i.e. buying that cup of coffee). So I agree with the coffee point, but I disagree with the 80/20 for well-being. The small things do really matter in terms of life satisfaction unlike in financial success where they are mostly irrelevant if you don't get house/car/job right.

Sometimes, the best advice is a bit hard to listen to. I found Jarred’s take on money being a choice unique and in that category.

I totally agree. Give more importance to volatility and drawdown and shave a little off the return expectation for a less stressful ride.

On the coffee; ever heard about making your own great coffee instead of buying sub-par brown water at Dunkin's/Starbucks? Invest in for example a DeLonghi that grinds and makes your beverage with the finest beans of your choice. Save money and increase your happiness in one fell swoop.

Exactly what we do and it's very enjoyable. Not to mention having coffee in bed or in pajamas at the house. Who tf wants to shit, shower, shave, and drive BEFORE they've had their first sip of coffee. Hell if I could do all that I wouldn't need coffee.

Huge fan of Jared’s work over the years, but I have to admit, the whole “cat psychic” thing has given me some pause.

9:37 High rollers cool! People who squander money by tipping left and right. Then maybe they end their lives asking for food staps and charity while eating cat food. One of the worst guest ever on this podcast!

Wow. Worst advice ever. Give Dunkin your money and let someone else make the levered gains on the larger house.

I have come to view American housing as a good levered bet and actually did buy a bigger house for this reason. However, the percentage of outlay for housing has to be under 25% of your income or it can severely cripple your overall saving and investing ability. Bigger house= bigger maintenance and bigger energy bills. And bigger properties taxes. And the LONG TERM rate of return in US real estate is 2%. So it's definitely more likely to be a forced savings plan than an actual profitable investment over the long term. Housing is still an expense at the end of the day. Stocks, especially dividend stocks, or rental properties have actual cash flows.
