Great epsiode have been regularly referring to GMBN tech for bike fixes and upgrades, along with attending local bike charity course on gear maintenance has helped me improve my mtb bike maintenance a lot, also saving me money and time in the process. Might ask for GMBN tech repair manual for Christmas looks good, thank you Anna and GMBN Tech! 😁🔧👍

i don't really enjoy working on my bike so i keep it to a minimum. also i take a lot of time with everything. i could be working my job or riding my bike in that time. so it might be more cost efficient for me to let stuff rot a bit.

Ask GMBN, will my bike be ruined if I leave it outside in below freezing temperatures, it's covered but I'm curious about the seals and oil freezing, and getting damaged,
@danielreed546112 күн бұрын
The oils and grass should be fine, but there's a lot of moisture suspended in the air that can cause problems. You can always turn the handlebars to be in line with the frame and remove the pedals to flatten the whole bike, and make it easier to store inside.
@soundwavesaudio112 күн бұрын
@danielreed5461 that's not an option for me, I live in an rv full time, so the bikes are in the back of the rv under a bike cover. Plus having to put the bike together every time I feel like going for a ride will be a hassle.
@olliefromthebikeboat568211 күн бұрын
@soundwavesaudio1 if your bike is dry freezing temps will not have much effect. I fix a lot of bikes that live outside (mostly on boats), and other than not, cleaning them, the biggest causes of damage are. 1st exposure to rain which seaps in to bearings as well as rusting up exposed steel parts. 2nd is constant sun exposure, speeding up the ageing of tyres and other rubber parts. If you are using a cover you are mitigating both of thease. Moisture from the air will still get to exposed steel parts, but won't get in to bearings. The main thing this moisture effects is the gear and brake cables, best thing to counter that is, when they are replaced to use stainless steel and not the cheaper galvanised cables. Other thing to do is to periodically clean an regrease your headset, seat post, pedal threads, etc.

I remember when I was OCD and I would check my chain and everything else. Now I just ride it until it breaks and I'm a lot happier. and stuff doesn't break very often because they make pretty good bikes these days. My last chain and rear cassette lasted at least 10,000 miles before they started skipping. I doubt she even checks all this stuff on her own bike.

I can't stand creaks and rattle so I often remove everything to clean and inspect my bikes, it's not OCD it's more like developing a routine to buy some peace and quiet moments on the trails 😂

Somewhere in between is ideal, no need to go overboard. Maintaining your bike can be fun, it doesn't need to be a hassle. The most critical stuff takes a few minutes. I have a better time when my bike is dialed smooth and quiet.

Thanks Anna. Great video and all things I want to learn to do especially the bearings. #ASKGMBNTECH Would you guys please do a video about rear wheel removal with sram transmission? Maybe I'm overthinking or misunderstanding but the way the axle mates up with the udh hardware I don't want to mess up the derailleur alignment since they can be touchy.

#AskGMBNTech greetings anna and owen, i have a quaetion about my tyres, im not sure what went wrong, i thought my wheels had to be trued, and when i check and double checked and also had a mechanic check, the wheels r stright as an arrow, however the tyres seem to sway, its not really affecting my ride, is there a solution? even thu the tyres are a few years old its been rarely used

Sadly, the industry has ended the trend of the consumer saving money. In the past, bike parts and bikes lasted decades, with proper maintenance. Since 2015, the industry has built in obsolescence with the numerous standard changes, forcing consumers to keep on buying new bikes every few years or expansive hard to find parts, or leave the game entirely due the crazy costs. This is why the industry is slowly dying. Every red cent profit over consumer happiness.
@ghostAFsky13 күн бұрын
Lots of hyperbole here. The market is absolutely filled with amazing bikes and parts that will still last decades if properly maintained. We have more options than ever and its easy to avoid proprietary tech if you want. The industry is not even close to dying. Standards have always changed. Nothing is stopping you from riding old bikes btw! Do your research and vote with your wallet.
@PeterCPRail874812 күн бұрын
@ghostAFsky not really. For us seasoned riders with years in the sport, all true what you said. For the average rider, everything I said is 100% true. Go to your local bike shop and look at their current inventory vs. pre covid times. It's meak at best. Talk to your local bike shop that's not in a biker hotbed like BC for example and the sales are stagnant with very few new customers entering the sport. So yeah, the industry is slowly dying, Santa Cruzes parant company just shuttered another European factory due to restructuring aka lack of sales.
@ghostAFsky12 күн бұрын
@@PeterCPRail8748 The LBS and the consumer play a role in the market changes too. Extremely common to hear about LBS staff being rude, arrogant, pushing sales over service, poor attention to detail, etc. And the bikes you think people should have and the bikes they want and picture in their head are not the same. Ask a salesman what it's like to try to sell a reasonable bike to a stubborn newcomer. It's going to take a while to get rid of the sports, race, carbon culture and bring in the everyday reliable riding culture and but it is already starting on social media. And thopefully we find a way to get all the incredible old rusting bikes in peoples sheds back on the streets. (Square taper isn't dead) Anyway, the industy is changing and certainly reacting to the chaotic shift from the pandemic, but it's not dying. Far from it. There are also factories opening, and endless new smaller companies starting that will more than replace the bloated companies that are shuting down. Maybe the Santa Cruz's of the world closing a factory is what we need when they charge exuberant prices just because of their name (maybe opinion :D)

So much of marketing and sales and product development today (not to be confused with bike type choices, or customer wants/needs) is built on COMPETITION, RACING, RAGE AGAINST TRAILS. Everything must be faster, harder, outrageous, extreme, and done with more rage. In other words, the industry sucks at marketing rather competent, ordinary, low to medium grade bicycles to the average person. Bike shops suck at engaging ordinary customers. The bike industry is out of touch unless you're a RACER. There's zero incentive from marketing and bike shops to sell bicycles under the image of recreation, the pure joy of getting out into the woods and trails for nature, for a stroll, for family bonding, for something other than counting watts, calories, cadence, heart rate, while you RAGE those pedals.
@PeterCPRail874812 күн бұрын
@exothermal.sprocket well said. This very thing all but killed the paintball industry. In the 2000s, it was one of the hottest sports and recreation in North America and Western Europe. 2002 to 2008, there was a heavy push from rec pricing points of sub $250 US markers or guns to 1000 to 2500 US highend pro level tournament paint slingers. The world financial crash of 2008 all but killed the sport. Many fields, stores, and manufacturers shuttered. Now it's an extension of airsoft where mostly milsim rigs sell or the few top pro level rigs do. Mtb is going the same way. 2500 US before covid got you a top of the line HT or decent mid level FS. Now that 2500 gets you mid tear HT and a piss poor basic clunky FS. Now 4000 plus is needed for someone wanting a more capable FS bike still of mid low to scrapping mid tier components. I am in my mid 40s been riding mtb for 32 years. Over the past two years I have lost many friends that rode with me to hicking or gravel/bike packing rigs as it's way cheaper. They could no longer justify the cost. A few of them professionals and I am in the trades so money not a big issue when it comes to even buying a 10 grand plus bike. But we can't and won't justify such an expanse for a toy. I am still riding my 2015 Gaint Trance 2. I will ride that thing as long as I can get parts for it or as long as the frame lasts. After that I dont know if I will stay with it. The pricing is to crazy to justify with other family and financial commitments. Mtb is becoming a young single riders pastime that is willing to trow crazy amounts of money at it.

How to save money on your mtb/Emtb IRL: 1 Wax your chain!!!!(no lube ) 2 Order Genuiene replacement parts from Ali expresss Shimano or Sram (30 to 45% cheaper with delivery)Than buying locally!!! 3 Do your own maintenance
@crankshoptv12 күн бұрын
If you do step 2, thoroughly check the part you're swapping out against the new one to ensure it's not fake.

If everybody buys knock off parts from ali-express you won't have a local bike shop any more. The fake parts won't work as well or last as long as genuine parts from a trustworthy source such as your LBS.
