MONEYBALL CLINIC
A team guide series, using a statistic-led approach to squad assessment, tactic building and recruitment.
CLARIFICATIONS
The squad view in the skin in this video is not part of the public release. This is because it causes a number of issues elsewhere - including, but not limited to, being unable to see players out on loan or international squads.
METHODOLOGY
I performed 10 full detail simulations of the Top 30 leagues to create a single database to give me insight into player and team performances under the current Match Engine. Set up in real world mode, with the first transfer window disabled. Teams were able to make transfers in January, allowing us to get a sense of what the AI considers each team's areas of weakness.
All player statistics were exported for players in active leagues who played over 900 minutes, aggregated and then standardised to per 90 metrics. All player recommendedations will come from this pool.
League results were similarly exported, and averaged out to help give a high level overview of team performance, which will instruct us on the state of teams at the start of the game and provide a baseline for us to measure against. I'll be using the save file from the season that is the closest representation of a team's average performance to then drill further into specific details.
No editor files were used as part of this process, ensuring that the guide provided is applicable to the vanilla game.

Great Video, would like to see more playthroughs/rebuilds with a team like the Thessaloniki series. But since u are the Data guy id like to ask u something that keeps me awake at night. Roughly 10months ago, i started a Schalke 04 save to bring them back to glory and created a quite unique tactic with an asymetrical 4-2-3-1. The original goal was to try out some "underdog" but it dominated everything and i managed to win the 2nd league championsship in my first season as well as the german cup in my 2nd season. Now im doing the same save since the first one was so much fun but for some reasons it absolutely doenst work any more. Whats even more strange is that, in friendlies, i battered Top Bundesliga clubs like Frankfurt 7:0 and RB Leipzig 4:0 but as soon as the 2nd league starts im not scoring anyhting. The tactic is defensivly solid i rarely concede more than 1 goal per game. Data also shows that i have the 3rd best defense in the league. But i also score rarely more than one. What i dont understand is, that in the simulation or when i play the game i barely get over 1xG. maybe 1,5max. But in the Data it shows that i have the highes xG in the league. Since im also the nr. 1 in underperforming xG i tried differend striker roles, different strikers, loans, everything but they simply dont score. Can i send u a screenshot or a savegame somehow? The tactic im using is: AF (tried everything here) WTF(support) AM (A) (cut inside, stay wider) CM(A) DW (support) BWM(support) CWB(attack)/ BPD(stay wider) Lib(defend) IFB(defend) Inverted WB SK(support) Teaminstructions: Fairly wide, shorter passing, higher tempo, play from the back (my GK has poor long shots otherwise i would distribute to the WTF), play more disciplined, underlap on the left In transition: Gegenpress In defense: Press more often, trap outside. Would be nice to hear some thoughts of u because im at the end of my latin.

The most standout thing to me is I see no creativity. AM (A) and CM (A) on attack will push forward very early. Your wide players are staying wide. There's nothing really tying it together. You don't specifically need playmaker roles, but could do with at least one or two players helping to bridge the defensive and attacking units.

Great video as always but I have one question. How do you tell Traoré is slow with 3 and a half circles for quickness? Is the same as Touba, Mouanga nad Nanizayamo, the proposed replacements.

Hello Mustermann! As a person trying to dive into data analytics I find your approach to the game, very interesting and innovative. I'm currently on the second year in my journeyman save and I'm using your skin. I have a question. For all these players that the pizza chart doesn't show anything means that there are not enough data? Will at some point be available or is this something that by default cannot be changed?

In game, generally, the pizza charts will only populate if they've played. So if the players do not play, then it will not change. In this series, the methodology is explained in the description. I exported only players who played a minimum of 900 minutes in the simulation. Then I removed players who only met that threshold in 1 of the 10 simulations. If a player has not reached those requirements then I will not hold data for them.

Ostensibly not much. Instant Result allows me to manage rotations, squad depth and condition. I might sign a player who is appropriate for what I want to do, but if I leave squad selection up to the AI, they might prefer a different player in that position. For example, the game is very insistent that Fali Candé, the undersized centreback that can't jump or head, should be starting at centre back. I could put Touba in the starting lineup and set it to "Use Team Selection When Possible", but this will then play Touba even if he isn't fit. Therefore, Instant Result is a more effective (but timeconsuming) way of doing this process.

How would I use moneyball at the start of a season before any data is gathered? You seem to have run simulations into the future

Yes, I have simulated into the future for the sake of these videos. For the very first season, there is no data. I would recommend creating a save point at the end of the every subsequent season before it rolls over, so you can check historical data.
