Amitabh Kant's perspective highlights a critical gap in India's EV landscape. While our manufacturers remain behind the curve, China’s impressive adoption of EVs (over 50%) demonstrates their forward-thinking approach and robust ecosystem. This foresight and energy from leaders like Mr. Kant are essential for pushing India toward sustainable mobility and closing this gap. Collaboration, innovation, and urgency are key for Indian manufacturers to catch up and lead in the global EV market.

India imposes tariff on EVs and critical technologies. China took advantage of the situation as they planned 10 years in advance and took the opportunities from building supply chain because of demand from Tesla and other leading manufacturers. India does not want Tesla and wants to impose 100% tariff. Why would anyone want to setup manufacturing in India without assuring there's demand. That's how China's supplier industry grew. India wants to grow organically, then it will be slow. There's no battery raw material, no battery refining, other supporting industries. Hopefully US will accelerate getting these permits by dropping regulation in from new administration.

Thought-provoking indeed. I believe that new investments in ICE engine vehicles in India may turn out to be a negative business case within the next 3-5 years. With the growing momentum toward electric vehicles (EVs), supported by advancements in technology, government incentives, and increasing environmental awareness, the shift to EVs is not just inevitable but essential. Investing in sustainable mobility solutions today, such as EVs, ensures a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for all.

First and foremost, IC combustion is NOT a dead technology! In the US, which is the largest market for EVs in the world, the EV manufacturers are facing heavy headwinds becuase people who gave into the hype of EVs are regreting their purchase. With tons of issues and challenges faced on many aspects of EVs including weight, pathetic charging infrastruature, higher cost of purchase, operating and total ownership cost, much higher rates of depreciation, high insurance cost and cost of replacement batteries, spontanoeous fires, etc. the sales of EVs have plummeted. Tens of thousands of new EVs are lying sold on dealership lots for more than 6 months. India is at least a decade (not 5 years) behind in this game. There is a heavy dependency on china for various critical parts that go into the manufacturing of any type of EV. The EVs are way worse than IC automobiles when it comes to being Green. That the EVs are Green is an outright lie. The German auto industry has collapsed with VW, Bosch and Ford announcing major layoffs and MBZ has reported that its profits are down 50%. On the PLI, the mobile industry mostly assembles phones, they do not manufacture phones. If this govt. is serious about reducing air and water pollution that have plagued us for many decades, it needs addresss them first by other means.
@DrCajetanTellis2 сағат бұрын
We are not responsible for polluting the world he said. But we are responsible to polluting our 42 cities . There seems to be a disconnect here. To give impetus to EV adoption, all new government and public vehicles ,including those of politicians should be electric . Manufacturers will produce enough only is there’s adequate and sustained demand.

Mr. Amitabh Kant's insightful interview could well mark a pivotal moment for the automobile industry, jolting it out of its apparent inertia. He has called upon longstanding players, whose performance has been disappointingly lackluster, to rise to the occasion and embrace global markets rather than remaining complacent with the continued promotion of ICE vehicles in the domestic Indian landscape. While Ola has demonstrated commendable leadership in the two-wheeler segment, giants like Tata and Mahindra must now heed this wake-up call-a message Mr. Kant has delivered with unmistakable clarity and urgency.

India can never reach 10% EV simply because the supply chain is in china. to produce locally, india needs to invest $5tn to achieve these targets and indian industry dont have that much money. Even RBI's forex reserves is only $650bn. Also doing business in india is very tough. You need to bribe all the govt officials to even start the factory. So Gross margins in auto industry must be atleast 75% before companies make any profit. 40% is tax, 15% is bribes and another 20% is cost. So Building EV's is not anywhere near especially cars. India needs corrupt free, tax free system and also govt subsidies to make that happen. So India will lag behind the world for sure and competing with china will always be a pipedream. 90% of raw materials is from china, 80% batteries are from china, 60% of motors are from china, 95% of electronics are from china. Simply put India neither does have the money nor the govt policy to achieve them

And how are they going to make batteries when we know Lithium, Manganese, Cobalt and Graphite which are essential for batteries are sourced from China and China has more than half of cell manufacturing capacity. And after sourcing those batteries you need various other components which again are sourced from China even the new Mahindra EVs use BYD Blade which is a Chinese product. And at last how will you produce the energy to charge those batteries? By using coal powered thermal electricity or diesel or oil to produce the electricity and what about the infrastructure. Amitabh Kant should realise the reality of India. We will always be a low middle income growing economy perhaps may loose all the economic growth cuz of the unsustainable overpopulation which is no longer demographic dividend instead it's a burden now.
