Mongolian writing in a nutshell

Many scripts have been devised for the Mongolian language.
The traditional Mongolian script is an alphabet with letters for consonants and vowels. It is written from left to right in vertical columns running from top to bottom. The letters have different shapes, depending on the position in a word.

I guess whoever thought of that wants to score political points. But that makes no sense in the age of computers. Computers already have a hard time with Cyrillic and Arabic. I think they might be making an effort to keep the traditional script alive in the age of computers - but a replacement is impossible.

@@flightisallright Cyrillic is just cyrilic, arab flips, and traditional mongolian can be written horizontally without any problem, you'll see

The Jurchen leader Nurhaci decided to convert the Mongolian alphabet to make it suitable for the Manchu people. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchu_alphabet

Saw this today, but couldn't for my life identify it, because it was horizontal. kept thinking trying to wrap my head around it as it looked almost arabic or South asian. Its beautiful and I think even more so when horizontal

There are parallels between Mongolian and Arabic scripts, most probably because of the deserts. Dunes in Arabian and Gobi deserts are carved by wind shears to shapes (when looked from above) resembling Arabic scripts. Pioneers of such scripts might have looked to dune formations for written communication. Perhaps. 😏

Ooh I never thought or heard of that before. That's really cool. Also, the Uighur script was based off the Sogdian which was based off the Arabic script. And the Mongolian script was based off the Uighur script

I would like to correct in that, technically, Mongolian script is NOT the only language still written vertically: BUT, Mongolian IS the only living language that is written vertical from the left, to the right. Other languages that can be and are written vertically today are all written vertically from right to left.
