Saw the film three times. Can't get over the first time we see Phoenix in the bar. Man. Striking, smart, funny, beautiful, and brave AF. Its clear she is one of the best pilots in the film. I wish she had a bit more screen time, but she crushes every second she's in. Big career ahead!

I know a female US Navy helo pilot who achieved the rank of captain, who had the exact same bearing as Monica does in the film while saying "Nice"- they say it as if it's the highest praise you'll ever hear from their controlled, unflappable selves. Ice water in their veins and all that jazz ;)

She handled the Gs most like an experienced pilot would. The other actors often looked like they were experiencing Gs for the first time. Made her seem more professional and focused, and it was also very obvious to me!

I concur. Have seen this movie 5 times now and she is my favorite outside of Maverick being the focal-point. Her character, mannerisms, subtly and poise, she just really nailed the role. Respect. Side note one of my favorite lines of hers was “So long as he doesn’t call you a man.” (Referring to Hangman) I lol’d hard at that one. Well done performance, Monica. N God you’re beautiful…

I was just a puke enlisted guy that fueled up her jet and put oil in it but today I am a full stack programmer and and I have a 4 year degree. I love the US Navy. Representation that seems not forced, is not forced and is the best one. I didn't think once during the film "this is the token this, this is the token that" and yet there were people of different ethnic backgrounds, sexes, etc who were badass. This movie was very well made and thought of. You would think people going to watch it multiple times is a rarity but as a matter of fact, I went in 4 times as well. Last time I watched any movie more than once in the cinema was with Avatar, 11 years ago.

In this movie: she shows her quality when things go wrong and she, as a real pilot does, immediately went through her emergency procedures from memory. If this was any of the other cgi woke drivel trash, she’d be an omnipotent fantasy box ticking space Jesus that didn’t have to train, and made snide remarks to an old brittle maverick who can’t stop reliving unwarranted past glories. You can have quality female characters that are closer to real life and exhibit and honor the qualities of real pilots now Marvel Rey (new) Mulan.
