In memory of Christopher Evan Welch, one of the many funniest scenes from Silicon Valley, from episode 1 of season 2: Monica’s awkward conversation with her new robotic boss Laurie Bream.

I love this scene. The “Peter Gregory is dead” tic is funny on its own. But when you realize that the meaning changes every time she says it based on context, it’s just super compelling writing. First time she says it, it’s more a remark on the tragic passing of a beloved character/boss. Second time she’s saying “we can’t continue these mad positions/ventures.” Third time it’s “Monica, Peter Gregory isn’t around anymore to protect your ass.” Just great.

Had a friend growing up whose mom spoke and acted exactly like this, down pat. She was extremely intelligent (iirc had a PhD) but everything she said and did was just bizarre. Makes the show even more hilarious to watch.

I have seen tons of professors who behave like that in College. Just like the tech sector, academics also has an appeal for awkward, often autistic people. Her style of speaking is called pedantic speech, it's something common with autistic people to speak in long sentences, using overly formal words.

Peter is well-respected in the industry so his shareholders are more lenient on his crazy sounding projects and top startups are more willing to approach him. Interesting what they did with this character between her introduction in season two through to her imprisonment at the end of the series. She was actually likable - in an awkward sort of "person on the spectrum" manner; but likable. By the end of the series, she just seems evil.
