It's never helped us at all. It's time to leave the gutter in it's place. It's a mentality some people seem to just have. Just like there's people who live in the hood but don't have that mentality. You'd think they come from the suburban area. It's a whole mindset some want to have. Thru think it's COOL until real shit hit them. Then there's some who think it's cool and real shit hit them and they still with the danger. It's a lifestyle🤷🏽‍♀️

I am in my 40s. My earliest childhood memories we lived in the projects. My parents worked hard to move me and my 6 siblings out of there, and my mom constantly reminded us that we were not ghetto or hood. Currently me and my siblings are ALL working class suburbia citizens. None of us took on that hood mentality. It's definitely a mindset that's glorified in our community. Which is very unfortunate.

I hope this sheds some light on the mindset. I grew up in a middle class neighborhood. My parents were business owners and very heavy in the church. My dad was super duper strict. My fiery fearless attitude was frowned upon. I was silenced and was raised to smile, look pretty and hide who you are. Well, there were some "hoodish" neighbors who took a liking to me. Whenever I was around them I felt heard and seen and I loved every minute of it. It was like a heavy weight was lifted. One day I was sexually assaulted by some boys at school. They stole my clothes and said I couldn't get it back until I slept with their friends. It was horrible. I told the kingpins on the block what happened because I was to afraid to tell my dad. They came up to my school during the let out. I don't know what they did, but the next day the boys apologized. They would turn the corner whenever I would walk down the hallway. I,ve been drooling over hood ninjas every since. Fast forward today. I live in the projects. 5 kids 4 kid fathers ( one has unfortunately been unalived God rest his soul)later, I want out. I had to do a lot of inner work to realize I'm grown now, I can walk in my purpose without praise from hood ninjas. It took me experiencing domestic violence in 2019 to realize I've had enough. It's not funny and I don't mean to make light of it but, I really believe that monster knocked some sense into me.

It says a lot that on every episode of “Good Times” the Evans family was trying to find a way to get out of the ghetto. It baffles me that young people aspire to live a hood life, especially when there are people living in the hood that would give their right arm to get out. I see it everyday as a teacher and it’s heartbreaking.
@watsonar70
@watsonar70 Жыл бұрын
@Stacey24101 my grandmother HATED AND I DI MEAN HATED GOOD TIMES! One reason was what you stated and how it made Blacks folks look bad all the way around!!! I wasn’t allowed to watch it and that’s why I don’t associate with certain types of people with that “Good Times” mindset. Due to racism, poverty, and redlining, my family had to live in low income housing, i.e. the projects and THEY made it out! They instilled in me, it’s not where you start but when you end up! It was designed by systemic racist to keep us segregated from them. And those who had upward mobility to do so move out of segregated neighborhoods just like George Jefferson on The Jefferson’s. What is left is a group of marginalized people who are trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty. Most people have nothing but to have to scrape by, it’s the survival of the fittest! Eat or get eaten!

Coming from someone that’s from the hood, you would do everything you can to get away from it, if you had any sense. Even though I was from the hood, my mom did not play that. She instilled in us that we were not going to be acting and sound like we’re from there. I got teased all my life for sound like a “white girl” aka sounding like I’m intelligent and was told that I thought I was better than others. Looking back now, I really was too good for that life and I don’t ever want to go back. I appreciate my soft life and everything that comes with it. I finally have nothing to prove to no one but to myself. Everything you said was on point Funky.

I have been away from the hood for over 25 years. Now when I talk to my friends back home, I have nothing to really talk about because their conversations are still about who owes them $5, who's messing around, and who just got SH%T etc. When they ask what I've been up to, I found myself only talking about the negative things in my life. Not the good things like graduating from college, getting a promotion or helping my sons with their business ..... that's when I realized I have evolved.

There should be more things to be known for from being from the "Hood" other than being the toughest person from the hood. You shouldn’t look down on anyone so I’m glad you’re working on that. What I’ve learned about life and what makes me non judgmental is that everyone is different and we can’t expect everyone to be like us. Morning Funky, I caught this video on my way into work and wanted to give a little more insight about the "hood" culture/mentality. John Morant aside, I was one that grew up in the hood but always had aspirations beyond the hood, and I succeeded. While I was determined to grow beyond my environment, I never looked down on those who were mentally stuck there, though, because I understood. Many fear beyond what they consider "safety" in an atmosphere of familiarity. Some who make it out feel guilty for doing so and they go around the hood and feel the need to act "regular" when they are not. And some you can take out of the hood but not the hood out of them. And that is sad, but it's all a state of mind. It's easy to tell the hood to pull their pants up and not sleep around. People in the hood are so used to being talked "at" they don't know how to receive when someone is talking "to" them in order to speak life to them. I still have elder family in the hood that have been there almost as long as I have been born. I visit, and I'm not ashamed, and I say hello to those I see in passing and keep it moving...without judgment because I understand. Don't get it confused, I am not a fan of glorifying hood culture. I came up in the time where neighbors looked out for each other and families. The elders didn't play and we didn't talk back. And as we got older we protected the elders. Times are much different now and I just know it will take someone who genuinely cares about the people in those neighborhoods and not the money made on the backs of them in death or otherwise before a change can be seen.

But Kaylie who works at Wendy at 30 with 2 kids and lives in the trailer park has long nails she’s expressing herself. Ghetto culture is seen as the pinnacle of black culture. It seems like anything other than that is not considered true to being black. In particular, living in the suburbs, being focused on education, and being boujee are often seen as the furthest from what it means to have a "black" experience.

Funky Dineva hats off to you. This is a hard conversation that needs to be addressed in our village. I hate that in 2023 that some people welcome less to be valued in a place that is disadvantageous. When a person has an opportunity to "make it out" please do so and mentor others (IF they heed the knowledge) from the village to have a better life. Now on to Monique and Derek. I watch this show from day one. I would not toot my lips up to keep addressing issues with a man I say I'm done with in no manner. Funky I agree with you that Monique is vindictive. She knew who she was dealing with from the beginning. Derek has a seem more obligated to her than the lovey dovey she wanted That being said men who are seeing this vindictive behavior with her will not approach her. Strange she did not go for the jugular (DV claims and nothing to play with) until things did not go her way.....again with Derek

Some Black people think that it's a right to passage to act a certain way because they are "Black". Recently, I had to tell a friend to stop acting out in public while being with me and others. What people don't realize is if something goes down, you will be unscathed; it's the ones that are in your company that will be hurt. I told my friend I would take her ass to court if something happens to me because of her foolishness. Black people, we do not own the right to act "ghetto"; it's not a "Black" thing.

But that’s likely bc I don’t come from that life and haven’t had to make the best of it to survive. I don’t only associate the hood with the worst (there are families, community, love and a good time in the hood), but I know it’s a privilege to only enjoy the best parts of any lifestyle and involve myself when I want to and not because I have to.
