Thanks for posting this video. Got one of these subs for free via neighborhood curbside trash pickup and was able to fix it, hardest part was lifting it and putting it in the truck. also, the trick for removing the nut holding in the toroidal transformer is nail polish remover. turns that black stuff into butter.

it may have some type of glue to provide an air tight seal, you may have to pry it open.

IF you still have the sub please look at the glue when it turns dark it becomes conductive. you may want to flake it off. Also would make a great video showing that it acts as a resister.

Nice video with good troubleshooting :). Expected a bad cap from the beginning on, but near the regulator was a surprise :). The MK-168 is a chinese knock off from the famous AVR Transistortester. It's a very nice device :D, had one build myself many years ago from the original schematics.

Good day sir, i have a sub here Monitor audio Silver RXW-12. The problem with it is: The red light goes from green to red without stopping and sometimes stays on red , sometimes not. Where should i check in it and how do you take off the black hard glue without braking the circuit. Waiting for answer. I'm counting on you because i'm stuck. By the way. im a certified tech but i'm still learning. Thank you! waiting for answer. Best regards. Serge.

When it comes to capacitors: When they are small, change them all. Cheap enough and easy to do.

Yes, this one has a class D digital amplifier, so there is a lot of noise.

@Conservator.4 жыл бұрын
A Class D amplifier is not digital but transforms the input to a PWM signal with is then amplified (by fast switching mosfets). After that the high frequencies are filtered out by inductors and capacitors. Just my two cents. Great explanation of the analysis and repair. Tx!

one time i was hung over really hung over and my amp died the same day (reason for getting so drunk) anyway while extremely hung over i dragged myself to the amp i somehow disassembled when drunk... reading voltages hurt, so i grabbed a 100uf 20v capacitor, attached one side to ground, then i attached the red probe to the positive... then i simply touched the positive to the positive side of each capacitor and listened for the hum as i touched each cap... viola, 30 seconds later i discovered 3 dodgy caps (as you touch the bad cap, it reduces/stops the hum)

capacitors have such a short life, the average is 1000 hours I look for high end ones that rate 5000 or more hours. if you leave the sub on all the time as I do they don't last.
@Conservator.4 жыл бұрын
Yanuario Arias Hi Yes, I too only buy reputable brands and look specifically for low ESR and longer lifetimes. I expect those caps to last a lot (really a lot) linger than the cheap Chinese caps that are surprisingly enough put in even high end systems. That said, sometimes (often) the design of the circuit is just not suitable for a standby mode. Especially because this amp is a class D anyway, a very efficient SMPS would have been much more suitable for the low voltage pre-amp than the regulators and resistors that dissipate any access energy and warm up everything around them. Even better would have been if the transformer would have had two extra leads with lower voltage for this part of the circuit so there wouldn’t be that much to dissipate in the first place. Maybe this sub does have those extra leads. I’ve repaired several KEF en Harman Kardon sub amps that just have output 3 leads from the transformer. They have 50-80V outputs that have to be brought down to 15V and it’s done by dissipation. Just opened a ‘newer’ (8 years old) KEF. Still the same board but they move the dissipating resistors to the heat sink. So the recognised the issue and patched but didn’t really solve it. They also still used a lot of ‘Licon’ and ‘Samcon’ capacitors. Such a pity.
