I have been using a Dell UltraSharp U3223QE for many months now with my Mac Studio and I think it’s great! Very good color accuracy for those who need it and it is absolutely bursting with connectivity! It might save many people the cost of a external dock. The build is quite good and the stand is height adjustable. I was considering an Apple Studio Display, but ultimately I could not justify the cost. By the time I added Apples adjustable stand and anti reflective coating it would have cost twice what I paid for the Dell. Plus I really wanted a 32 inch to help a bit with my aging eyes. All around, a great monitor for the price.

Another option, if 1440p and used is acceptable is the venerable Apple Thunderbolt Display. I just bought an M2 Pro Mac Mini, and hooked up my Thunderbolt Display using an Apple Thunderbolt 2-3 adapter. Aside from a great display and great sound, there is the built-in “dock” featuring: 1 TB pass-through port, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 1 FireWire 800 port, three USB A 2.0 ports, and a 720p FaceTime camera. I like having the extra USB ports to plug in my legacy (USB 2) devices without wasting a TB4/USB4 port. The FW 800 port lets me connect legacy drives still kicking around, and the Thunderbolt pass through connects 4 external drives via a pair of TB to eSATA adapters. For me, it is an ideal solution, and gives me time to save for an eventual Studio Display.

I once heard that getting 4k monitors for computers such as this one or the macbook pro is kind of a bad idea because of resampling or wahtever the correct term is... it uses a ton of resources and slows down the machine (that's why apple monitors are 5K). Is there anything you can tell me about it? To be more precise, the correct output is supposed to be 5K, so it has to sample it back down to 4K, again I'm no expert, just watched that video and now I don't know what to get.
@craigneidel Жыл бұрын
I have not seen that lately. I'm sure some monitors don't play well with Macs and have seen quite a few. But I don't think it applies to all 4K monitors out there and not from my experience using them.

I went with the Dell S2722QC. Perfect size, love the swivel mount, and the USB-C connectivity. That frees up my MacMini's HDMI port for a digital tablet. Great look at monitor options. Would you consider doing a video that talks about the pros/cons of different monitor resolutions when paired with a Mac Mini (M2 Pro). I have an old 27” iMac 5K (2015) and wish Apple did not kill the ability to use it as an external display. What can I expect to experience if I go with a 2.7K vs 4K vs 5K monitor with a new M2 Pro Mini? Is the big jump in cost between the 5K and 4K monitors really worth it? In what type of scenarios / workflow would it make a big difference (note my eyesight is not great, so I cannot really see small text well anyway). Thoughts?
@craigneidel Жыл бұрын
Depending on eyesight it could change things but I find the 5K is easier for me to read. Also, now that I'm so used to the 5K and 4.5K (with same PPI) I really don't want to change back to 2.7 or 2K monitors if possible. I think there is a massive difference but in the end it's nothing more than a luxury really and if I didn't have my Apple tech channel I most likely would have still been on a 2K display. Depending on budgets for people I fully understand 5K is not always the best choice.

When I got my M1 Max Mac Studio, I was replacing a 5K iMac from 2014. I didn’t want to drop down to a smaller screen. At the time I didn’t see enough price difference from the Studio Monitor for another 5K one to bother with, so that’s what I bought. Later I saw the comparable LG (same display even) on sale for about $1100, so I got it as a second monitor. Obviously this is not a budget system, but it is one I should be happy with for years. For me, anyway, it is a false economy to get something that will make me want to upgrade in a couple years or less.

Hello Eric. I would determine a few of the monitors that you like and then do research and review comments on Amazon or email the manufacturer to see what they say. I have a Xaiomi 34” widescreen monitor hooked up to my older 2012 Mac mini using the display port (3440 x 1400px res). I have this problem that I have to increase the zoom and scale for most apps to have them look like they did back on my previous smaller Samsung 24” monitor (1080p). Some apps or plugins don’t offer this scale feature, so they appear rather small. I am wondering if I bought a newer Mac and another widescreen, it will be much better ? Also, if I change the resolution on my widescreen to say 2400 to make it look bigger, the text and screen text is quite blurry and poor. I am planning to maybe buy a newer MacMini M2, but wondering how this will really be on a widescreen? I see there's not much mention about any widescreeens here. Perhaps buying dual monitors is best? Thanks

There are literally hundreds of different setups so I would just research the monitor and then read the comments or email the seller to confirm your setup will work. Even cables matter with individual monitors so it's a tough one to answer for sure.
@yungsookevinhong7943 Жыл бұрын
I read about because Mac technology is base on retina technology therefore a monitor resolution should under the division of 2k monitor resolution. The 2x 2k resolution which is 5k, 4k resolution is 1.33333 factors therefore is not the best for Mac, so if 4k monitor is still better on 2k setting
@craigneidel Жыл бұрын
Yes, just do the research on each individual monitor I listed. In the end they all will work with the Macs but depending on resolutions and other factors some will be better than others. I have used a number of 1440P monitors on Macs just fine so my advice is once you narrow down the monitor you want then do fine tuning research and reach all the notes on Amazon etc. to see how it worked for other Mac users. Thanks for posting - appreciate that.

Here is some info I found that has to do with scaling - They said.... "And use 2752 × 1152 (HiDPI) as the Display Resolution in Settings. (For the record I'm using 34" displays) This is the effective resolution of 3440x1440 at 125% scaling and offers by far the best viewing experience of everything I've experimented with."

@craigneidel10 ай бұрын
All 4K monitors may have slightly reduced text clarity if running in 4K but I really don't see too much of it with my eyes. You can try running at 1440P as that is half the Mac normal res and it could clear it up but of course that's not 4K. Also, make sure you are running a cable fast enough for the connection.

@@craigneidel Yes, I realize that each one of your recommendation videos is just a starting point, which you also said in this particular video. If people like you have tested the pieces of equipment they are talking about, the best thing I could do myself is to listen to those recommendations and choose what seems to be the best for me, because I can't just take such pieces of equipment and test them myself, even any other than those tested and recommended by such other people. Thus, the best thing I can do is to rely on such recommendations, at the same time bearing in mind that the final choice is mine. All in all, then, taking the testing part into account, it is why I appreciate recommendation videos such as yours 🙂

I have been using my Roku 55" TV with my Mac Mini M2 for a year now. It's 4k and works out fine fore me. I am not a gamer so I don't know how it would work out fro that. But there is no way I would spend a lot on a monitor. My Roku was way under $300.00. I have two Mac Minis hooked up to it. I can switch between the two Macs at anytime. Plus watch TV. LOL!

I always say to use what works best for you and if the TV works that is fine. It's hard to video edit on a larger TV I would guess etc. but again, if it works good for you then why spend more on a monitor.

@@craigneidel For me, it's not that hard to edit videos on my 55" TV. I found it better than using my laptop and way better than doing it on my phone. LOL! I can set in my recliner and relax while editing or looking at YT. The nice thing the way I have it all set up, I can still watch TV or switch from one computer to another by a flick of the TV remote. Plus, I could not beat the price of the TV for under $300.00. For that price I got Not only A TV but 3 HDMI's to hook up two computers and another device. Plus other input/output jacks. Been using it now for almost a year. But I say the same thing as you. Buy what you like and use what works for you. I only wanted to share what works for me. Maybe someone else was wondering if they could use their TV as a monitor.
