The number One album of all time. McCartney gives us the greatest vocal variety and range that nobody else can. King of melody, King of arrangement, King of lyrics, King of vocals, player of any instrument. There is no aspect of songwriting he doesn't cater to. No aspect of vocalising he can't handle; pitch perfect, tone variety is amazing, and yet he maintains his natural foundation tone when ever needed, perfect sense of harmony, backs the story line vocally better than anyone, he can scream, growl, holler, croon, adlib, emulate anyone and almost anything, his vocal power is limitless. No one compiles as many sections to a song without losing context as he. There is not one flaw in this man's example, except his lead guitar sounds in some cases. Otherwise Sir Paul McCartney is the perfect, flawless secular example musically in this fortunate world of ours and I wouldn't be surprised if he holds this mantle for the next hundred years.

To answer your question, McCartney’s kids used to say monk instead of milk when they were very young. So Paul ran with that and dreamed up Monkberry Moon Delight. Paul says if it’s anything, it’s a milkshake.

it’s not gone! Just aged, with more rasp. I mean how many singers these days can do , or will do a 3 hour concert! Except Taylor Swift. Fans still enjoy and flock to his concerts which are always sold out. One song I think he should replace in his show is “Maybe I’m Amazed”. He can do it but the strain is noticeable. I saw him twice in CA , 2 different shows. In one show he sounded ok., but pretty raspy. The next show I felt he was too screamy, and he sounded like when someone is holding their Emotions in or trying not to cry, It’s possible he is I mean it was written for Linda , the love of his life for 30 years of marriage until her death. But then in each concert both nights he belted out “Helter Skelter”and sounded fantastic! The rest of the songs were great! He sounded very emotional when he sang the song he wrote for John Lennon “ I think it’s “Hear Today” People in the aaudience were crying and it sounded like he was choking back tears. The guy is going to be 82 this June ! So he deserves a little break. Love him !

Monkberry Moon Delight is a “fantasy milkshake” he made up for his kids. Paul had the most range (7 octaves?) and the most diverse voice of most, if not all, singers at the time. RAM is my favorite album… The Backseat of My Car, Dear Boy and Too Many People are epic tracks!

You know, it's interesting because there was this song called Say Say Say, I don't know if you remember that but it was a duet with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson (they did several songs together in fact but Say Say Say is the only one that had a music video of them together), anyways, Michael Jackson had written most of the lyrics and Paul added some of his own lyrics and the music video is about a miracle potion that, when you drink it, gives you amazing super human strength lol and Mockberry Moon Delight is a fantasy milkshake lol.. So yeah, that's probably not coincidence. Maybe Paul came up with the drink idea in Say Say Say too.

The lyrics are so obscure and playful. There was an old kids joke about the tomato family walking and the kid tomato lagging behind and after too many times telling him to walk faster the daddy goes back and stomps on him and says "Catch Up"! (Ketchup). So, ketchup, soup and puree? Some other lyrics are references to things related to his kids, but mostly very clever and obviously fit the song. I always loved this song, his vocal performance was out of this world.

That was so enjoyable. But I would also say he's been doing this since the very beginning. Check him out doing the Little Richard cover Long Tall Sally which has quite a history behind it which I just can't go into right now. So then when he was in his twenties in the beatles, I mean I'm sure you've heard some of him doing that like Helter Skelter and oh darling, but really he had so many. We think about him as the sweetest of the sweet with yesterday and just beautiful love songs like that but really, check out me and my monkey. Check out you say it's your birthday. And yeah this was early on in his solo career but also I would say Maybe I'm Amazed which is a much more genteel song but nonetheless ends up shredding his vocal chords later in it.

There are several listings of the lyrics in this song. Some say it says.'Ketchup".... Soup and Puree". That makes no sense followed with "Don't Get Left Behind" The lyric is "Catch Up, Super Fury", Just as it sounds. :Smoking, Monkberry Moon Delight"..... "Suckin' monkberry moon delight" is what you do with a pipe. Much like John denied "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was about LSD/Acid for obvious reasons. Paul made up alternative reasons not wanting the critics to know it is written about some Home Grown Cannabis. Super Fury was a strain they grew before Monkberry, and the Monkberry was much better stuff, so the lyric that the super fury had to catch up or get left behind. That is the story I heard shortly after the album was released from credible sources and makes the most sense. "Try some of this honey, What is it? "Monkberry Moon Delight" is not talking about Ketchup, soup or puree. But, only Paul knows for certain.

I loved Paul's first few solo albums (I liked John's even more), but the critics really savaged Paul's solo stuff because his lyrics tended to be frothy or even nonsensical. This is a pretty good example of what they were talking about.

I never took any of the critics seriously who "savaged" some of Paul's solo stuff because they tended to be the same ones who praised The Beatles lyrically "frothy" and "nonsensical" songs. The majority of solo Paul has received far more positive reviews than negative ones, anyway. The problem was that some critics, like misguided fans, blamed John and Yoko while others blamed Paul for The Beatles breakup and used their reviews as a means to vent their frustrations. Paul's mega solo success made him an even bigger target with disgruntled critics than Lennon who was also no stranger to criticism. The biased, exaggerated reviews were thinly disguised personal attacks rather than being about the actual art.

Remember that strange quirky wild eyed fella that hops around the stage playing his freakish Flute?… sure you do, you know the guy. You rode aboard his Locomotive Breath with Aqualung…. This should be added to their play list…..Jethro Tull - My God (Nothing Is Easy - Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970)

JMBOY? great song selections to react to. McCartney was off the charts talented- he played almost everything instrument on this album. Pull up, also from this album (Ram), "Too Many People". And if you really want to be a trailblazer among the reactors, pull up the Concert For Kampuchea from 1979. Specifically react to the Little Richard cover of Lucille- it'll blow you away. McCartney can belt out the screamers. No less than 20 musicians on stage for that number by the way.

In a recent interview clip on Sirius XM radio's Beatles Channel, Paul said that he decided to channel his inner Screaming Jay Hawkins when singing Monkberry Moon Delight. Actually Screaming Jay Hawkins did a great cover of Monkberry Moon Delight which is available right here on KZbin.
