In 1968, at19, I was a roadie for an agency called "B and E Artists" in Chicago. The "E" stood for Earl Glickman(a very respected independent record promotor for Herb Alpert, Boyce and Hart, and others). I roadied for Boyce and Hart for two weeks in the Chicago area. My parents happened to own a "shabby" Cadillac-but it was a Cadillac. So, one night I was asked to chauffeur them to some friend's of theirs 2nd floor apartment across from The Lincoln Park riots during The Democratic National Convention. The air was so thick with tear gas, that it was like a fog drifting our way on the lake wind. It surprisingly seeped through the windows, into the apartment. Towels around the windows couldn't block the gas-we were being overcome. Needing fresh air, we ventured out the back of the building toward the alley but stopped when we saw demonstrators being chased by Billy-club wielding police. At ground level, the air wasn't much better, but their seemed to be safety staying near the building. Boyce and Hart decided to stay with their friends, while I had to get the car back to my parents (who had warned me not to go anywhere near the demonstrations). The car had been parked in front of the building on Lincoln Ave., so it was relatively safe and easy to get to. But like the apartment, it was filled with tear gas. During the 15- mile drive, even with the windows open, the gas swirled around my head. I had to fight from passing out. At home, I was barely conscious in bed for the next three days-missing the next show, not to see them again. Tommy and Bobby forwarded a "Get Well" picture, signed by the band. During those two weeks, they were the MOST gracious and caring to their fans, out of all the bands that I roadied with in that" Summer-of-Love"(which were: The People/Iron Butterfly/Blue Cheer/Boyce and Hart). 68summerofloveroadie

Do you have any other videos of Monkees '80's conventions? Man, I'd love to see the Los Angeles conventions on tape, as well :)
