Getting Groomed by Olivia. Unfortunately, Olivia was kept as a pet for ten years so she was never able to be successfully introduced into a social group or released into the wild. She was diagnosed with cancer and was humanly euthanized in 2012.

Most monkeys groom in two different ways. One is to show respect or subservience to an older monkey higher up in the hierarchy. The other way is social grooming where everyone just comes together on bonds. the little lip smacking that she is doing is a sign she is socially grooming and she would expect you to groom her back, otherwise you could actually hurt her feelings in a way

does it or can it really hurt when they groom you? I dont mean accidental snags and stuff, but I see them sometimes really pick and dig into like nails, my only thought is that hurts, especially if they get a nice chunk of skin they want removed.

Grooming doesn't necessarily mean the monkey finds something, it can be a social bonding mechanism along with a precautionary measure to look for anything not supposed to be in there. We also need to factor in that as the description mentions, this monkey never grew up socializing with others of the same kind, and being kept as a pet might have made him do these things either because the owners made him do so, or because to a degree instinct tells the animal to perform this procedure, even though the animal doesn't find anything.

Epicerror your talking about the greeting lip smacking which is a bit louder and flappier. that signals well meaning intentions and love. the soft lip smacking is as i said, it helps sooth and it's a sort of compulsion like foot tapping.

That's incorrect. You may want to research on it. Majority of the time, its done when grooming and they begin lip smacking more when grooming vulnerable areas of the body such as the face. Its communicating a friendly "I am going to be touching there".

Epicerror i have done research on it, both through study and observation. monkeys make a number of lip smacks. also even with in a species different monkeys have different grooming noises. we could be arguing semantics as it would have similar effects on the monkey. but if it was to say ok I'm touching you in this sensitive spot, why doesn't it change as she moves to other body parts. also as a primate yourself dont the gentle noises put you into calm state?

I saw cat grooming and now this. Cats just seem to lick without much thinking. Monkeys, however, seem as if they are trying to find something. They use their hands to search here and there first and then lick. Possibly, parasites? Humans like this woman probably do not have any conspicuous parasites on their hair. Then why did the monkey choose those specific spots to lick?

i'm wondering, why aren't we also looking for cure for cancer in other animals as well ? i mean that could give us an insight in how cancer can be cured for us humans as well.

Because their physiology can be a whole lot different, and cancer research is already quite expensive to do. We know how some cancers can be cured, but the keyword is not necessarily "how", but more a matter of "being in time": some of the cancers we can now cure require early discovery. Next to this, I think, at this current moment, there is also a decision made to not try and cure it in animals, because we as humans can understand why we are so violently ill because of for instance chemotherapy, but an animal can not, nor can we as humans explain it to them. Unfortunately, just like early discovery can be a key factor in having someone survive cancer, there are also still variables doctors don't yet understand: some people with the same type of cancer in practically the same spot, at the same stage of development survive while a nearly identical patient (when it comes to the cancer at least, not their physiology and endocrine system obviously) either continues to battle reoccuring tumors elsewhere in the body, or quickly suffers the cancer from running rampant in their body and they die. Next to all of that, I think another factor weighing in is the time of life added: some animals already don't get really old compared to humans, so when an animal expected to live for about 30-40 years experiences cancer, the amount of years that treatment might add might not outweigh the discomfort it could bring for the animal, along with a cost-benefit ratio not making it profitable.
