I remember in Monkey Island 2 entering the tunnel under the waterfall on one of the three "tri-island area" islands and the game asked for disks 10 and 11 for the first time and that freaked me out as I hadn't needed those disks before and I thought I was at the end of the game. Then when I got to the endgame much later, the showdown with LeChuck took place in identical-looking tunnels and I for the first time realised why big games had shit-loads of disk-swapping. You could either duplicate data across the disks and have a game with 20 disks and very little disk-swapping or you could have a game on 11 disks and have a single scene require three disk-swaps because many scenes would re-use data.

@@krashd : You played MI2 on 11 floppies? Wow, and I thought playing MI1 on 4 floppies was inconvenient.
@krashd4 жыл бұрын
@@OMA2k I think as games got bigger (1993-onwards) is when it became obvious that games either had to be hard disk installable or would come on a CD instead of floppies, but by that time the Amiga and Atari ST were dying and PC gaming was going to take over. in 1991/1992 a game on 8-12 disks was rare but by 1993 it became a common feature for games to have a handful of disks. I think the worst example was Rise of the Robots, a beat-em-up that came on 16 disks. Disk-swapping in that game was insane because every robot was on a different disk and every location/venue was on a different disk and so you spent two minutes worth of loading and swapping just for a 60 second fight. When I got my first PC in 1995 the change was incredible, games were 10 times larger but everything loaded in seconds because of the hard disk.

lukeholladay i love this one. there's a 40 fdd version of the pirates of the carribean, but it sucks. since it's just 4 arrays of 10 fdds playing 4 channels. this guy here put together some awesome creativity. the sound is actually amazing. the table is used greatly to amplify the sound and it compliments especially the both bass fdds. this is a piece of art ! btw both middle fdds on the right side do the bass

This is ridiculous! Amazing. My least favourite thing about using diskettes: the high risk of data getting corrupted. My second least favourite thing about using diskettes: the slow reading and writing speeds. My _favourite_ thing about using diskettes: the sounds that the drive makes when reading or writing. ;)

Funny thing is that with certain drivers, the PC speaker would have been able to play much better sound. It only sounded crappy because the system device wasn't supposed to be used for more advanced stuff (and maybe the driver would have eaten up CPU). I remember having tried it out back then and it sounded as good as sound card sound can from a single tiny membrane within a PC case.

With that said - with a really effective controller for the floppy drives (that can split the load in such a way that as little raw audio data as possible is lost, i.e. gets utilization to as close to 100% as possible without creating other issues) and floppy drives that are capable of producing an as precise sound wave as possible (and the controller can utilize this to create a clear composite sound wave) - it might be doable, would love to see (hear) it done, for sure. ^^
