Help Me Diagnose This S-Type!!

Work continues on my OG's Jaguar S-Type! In this video, I'll show you Jaguar S-Type fuel pump replacement, how to drain gas from a full gas tank, and a Jaguar S-Type Key Reprogramming that miserably fails!! Hey Mike, so the S-Type had various revisions and upgrades throughout the years what you have is an X202 which was the first major revision. Unfortunately that means different security systems as well. having look at the autel you used it doesn't have a option for the 2002-2004 but it does have an option for 2004 and up which was when another major revision that happened on the S-Type called the x204. In other terms that autel will most likely not be able to comunicate to this car to program the key. What you will most likely need is a place that has Jaguars old diagnostic system called IDS in order to program the key successfully. In some cases I believe the Jaguars new systen SDD can revert back to a legacy IDS mode using the right cable. Now I've heard of cases where the steering lock has not been unlocking thus preventing the car from starting but not the opposite it maybe worth looking at the fuse for steering lock someone may have pulled it to leave steeting unlocked.

The valet key for Ford like cars only gives limited access to certain things on the car. I think you will need a blank chip key that is not programed with limited access. I think once you do you will be able to program the key fully to start the car.

I really like these ford powered Jags of the 2000's. Loads here in England for really cheap. Solid motoring if there not rusted out. Silly fools chuck salt on the roads here when we get a few days of minus temps in the winter. Pointless in my view and just wrecks older cars. Keep on it Mike you'll get there. Hi Mike, like the content. You need 2 blank chip keys to program. All existing keys get deleted when u reprogram. Blank ford type keys without remote buttons will work.

Hello there from Henryetta OKLAHOMA! I can’t provide much info on programming a key. But, I do know a lot about Jag S-Type’s & XJ’s. Good thing it’s a 4.2 V8 (no timing chain issues) and a ZF transmission- be sure to check those transmission cooler lines because they ALL leak! I’d be glad to answer any questions as I had a 2005 S-Type 4.2. I fixed A lot of issues with it. I currently have a 2004 XJR (can be seen on the Car Wizards channel). My XJR is the same drivetrain, just supercharged! I’d be happy to help! I’ve worked/researched this drivetrain for about the last 8 years! -Kelby

Hello there cowboy here again well mick not sure if it's true for your valagh key but in my experience if you dive in a valagh away from the main key it will in essence be self destructive and shut down the engine not allowing it to start and cannot be restarted with that key again you gotta buy a proper Jaguar program key set it up then and only then you may be able to get the valagh key working it's a safety factor built-in to the car to keep someone from just driving away with it so you're on the right track you've just gotta buy at least one key farb hah it mechanical cut then programmed to your vehicle end of frustration and that's the rest of the story lol some a little older folks will get it we'll be watching remember always be safe healthy and happy God Bless 🤠 it was done for your protection 😅

hey mike you need to check EVERY FUSE in the car . the scanner is not communicating with the immobilizer. that usually means the the immobilizer has no power . check every fuse. make sure none are missing . also try to communicate with the steering lock . you should try and clear the codes in the steering lock and or try to activate the lock using the scanner .

That first wash video was so satisfying too watch, the S-Typre is a beautiful car. Sorry unable to comment on the steering lock but it should lock without the key in so probably on the right line looking at that first. Love the videos Mike, keep up the great work

Hey Mike! I think I have an idea what your problem is! I had the exact same problem on a Volvo S80 T6, also a Ford product. All keys stopped working and the car refused to start and refused to program them. The issue on that car was the ECU. Sometimes in that car, I am not sure about the Jag, water gets into the ECU and messes it up. With a cleaning and some solder maybe you can save it. In my car we had to clone the old ECU to a new one. Either way, when the immobilizer starts acting up and will not communicate with the keys anymore, it will be a communication problem with the ECU in 9 times out of 10. Hope this helps.

I have no idea if this would work, but noted this on a forum "If you have the early s type then you can pull the 10 amp blue fuse. No. 19 in the fuse box near driver's feet. This will prevent the steering column lock from working and the car will start reliably. Pulling out fuse 19 won't effect any other electrics (other than the steering tilt mechanism). My problem was intermittent so I did this when the steering column was not locking. So I don't know if it will work when in the "steering column locked" mode But worth the effort to find out."

Mike.........that Jag had a classic front end. Since it is a Ford product, I think they had addressed the oil leakage problems.........this could be a good car once you have it back on the road. Another thought.........bare wires, electricity, gas fumes...........would could possibly go wrong?

Not sure for this since it's a Jag but other Fords of the same era required a #1 key to program another one - since this is apparently the valet key I wouldn't think that it's the #1 - I almost had to have a dealer program a key when I'd lost my key in a snowbank many years ago - fortunately, I'd found it - after which I'd had another key cut and programmed by a locksmith (this was years ago - now I'd just use an Autel dongle) - I put the #1 key away and carried the "alternate key" from that point on. Autel software isn't the most intuitive either - it's possible that you can do what you need to do with it - just the menu system doesn't "appear" to let you. I had to run through the battery "register" on my wife's Mini a couple times before it seemed to work - I got it on the first try but the tool didn't reflect the re-register until the second time around.

FWIW, I had to get a locksmith program the key to my 2005 XJ8 VP. I tried several scanners that was SUPPOSE to be able to, but no joy! Cost was around $300.00! Dealer wanted $580.00!

You should get a foam cannon for your power washer Mike, spray it on, let it sit for a bit while the foam does it's magic, and blast of ALL the dirt...... and maybe some of the paint LOL

It has to do with the security system. I have a 2003 X Type and had to have the security system replaced. The car had power until I turned the key. The keys did need to be reprogrammed after the security system was fixed.

You should have jumped pin 83 and 87 and used the oe pump to push out the old fuel….

The valet key is programed from the dealership to be not reprogrammed as people would steal cars and take valet key from the owner ND reprogramming and yeah u get it

What was wrong with the old way where you had one key to unlock the door and ignition and another one to unlock the trunk and glove compartment?! Isn't that the same thing as an electronic, computer controlled valet key without the useless complications. AND you didn't have to worry about your key battery dying, steel keys don't need batteries or stupid computer chips!

I had an '01 Focus where an additional key could be programmed but you had to have #1 and #2 keys and work through a long procedure to get an additional one to work - you could as a non-tech but you had to follow the instructions to the letter - most people just gave up and had the dealer do it. It's possible too that the chip in the other key you have is "dead" you might be able to add it back in or "re-learn" it.... Cars these days you'll have to have an ODB-II tool and the correct software....

I worked on my 2003 Lincoln LS with the same issue and you have to have 2 keys to program. And I worked on the car without the battery unhooked and was by the Ignition and it just blinked solid red and I had to have it toad to the Ford dealership

Mike, you can get in car, turn on ignition,use key fob to lock,should reprogramme, this has to be the originaL FOB/KEY.... the key needs a chip in it.

Hey Mike, just be carful with programing keys using autel elite. I have used it on my infiniti and have deleted all the keys just to find out that unit is not capable of acquiring the pass code it needs from the bcm to program new keys. That unit is not locksmith grade, I bought autel KM 100 to program all keys lost and it works perfect not that expensive either. Although that is also not a unit capable of all things locksmith, you would need autel im500 or im600. My autel elite is up to date and still not capable. Just saying that even thought it is a powerful unit it can`t do it all.

That key issue may well be the security module has gone bad. Had the same thing in a Ford F150 and the security module is attached to the OBD2 port. Replaced it and off to the races with the key programming. I do not know (can’t remember) if Ford was still in the Jaguar game for this model, but maybe this will help..

I would get a couple key blanks off the internet. Have a good locksmith come out and cut and program the keys. You should be able with purchasing of keys and locksmith be in the ballpark of about 175 to 225.

I did some quick checking, it appears Otofix (the one Randy has) programs keys. He might check and see. It would seem there would be something under the column cover broke which is supposed to lock the steering wheel. Just a couple guesses.....

It seems to me if it comes up with the security issue and the wheel is not locking it's definitely locking you out due to the fact there's been a break-in in the security hence the wheel not being locked 🤔🧐🙄

You can't reprogram a valle key, and you probably need to replace the squib along with the transponder in the steering column. I am a JLR Master technician here in the UK

The valet key is not powered, so it's not a smart key. Hence why the Autel can't locate it.

I don't believe a valet key cannot be programed to open everything. I've never known anyone who did this. I have known people who had to get new keys.

believe it or not you could have used that gas . it doesn't look that bad . i would have dumped 5gal of premium on top of the old gas and 2 bottles of fuel injection cleaner would have been fine 💯.

This is what i was dreading Mike, im afraid that jag's have alway made thier cars with soul distroying electrical systems and were forever updating and medaling with them. I suspect the first issue is the valet key as they were never ment to be reprogrammed as a main key, so untill you have a main key to play with. Saying that it doesn't explain why the Vkey dosenostart the car, the only thing i can think of is that as the car has sat for so long with a flat battery that the Vkey has become corrupted and is no longer talking to the car. As for the steering lock situation not sure on that one but check all the fuse's and relays to be on the safe side. Has Missy had no luck with tracking down the keys from her son. If I were you I'd call that Jag a complete loss. Even when you get it running it is just going to be a money pit for her son as time goes on. It's a Jag so that basically sums it up. I'd go out and try to find them a nice little 4 door sedan that is easy to work on and parts that are cheap to get. Like maybe a early 2000's Chevy Impala or maybe a Honda Civic. Something small and affordable. That Jag is just gonna be one big headache.

Too technically complicated! Nobody needs an electronic steering wheel lock, that is utterly ridiculous!! 1940 Fords had a locking steering column and push button starting.
