The couple mistake is that they are too greedy for their own good. If I were them i would just buy the chair with high price from her and get the huge profit from the auction but the couple were just too greedy to make more money
@Grothgerek9 ай бұрын
Not really. Like Monk said it himself, if they tried to buy it, there was the risk that they would have looked into it and noticed how much worth the chair was. If some random dude offers me money for a normal chair, I obviously would be very skeptcical.
@tomxaider20589 ай бұрын
@@Grothgerek It is still a matter of greed in the end. If they legibly buy from the old lady she would have it evaluated and demand millions of dollar or at least a percentage from the auction.
@Grothgerek9 ай бұрын
@@tomxaider2058I mean, yes. They are still thiefs/criminals. Obviously its greed. But I wouldn't say that they acted irrational because they were too greedy. If the grandma had evaluated the chair, then there is the risk that she asks for more than its actual worth (the estimated price isn't necessarily the price it is sold, because you still need a buyer that pays this much). She could also auction it herself, or demand so much that they can't afford it. In short, if they told her, there would be the risk that they wouldn'tt be able to get anything out f it, if they tried it the legal way.
@Leoncroi6 ай бұрын
True, but also a little social engineering and charismatic bluffs could go a long way. "My grandmother left us a living room set in her will, and unfortunately, one of the chairs had internal dry rot and broke beyond repair. THAT chair is from the same set. Since we know it's an antique, and how valuable it is, would you be willing to take $150,000 for it? The living room looks so empty without it, and I want to try and preserve my grandmother's collection." Tug on heartstrings, give a more than generous offer to someone who clearly didn't know (since they let their cat sit on it), and considering it was the mid 90's, $150k is a stupid offer to pass up for a chair. Yeah, I'd like to have $2.5 million, but $150k is just as lifechanging, and more specific, immediate. Or, just be upfront and honest, and split the winnings of the auctioned chair 40/60. $1Mil/$1.5Mil is still a huge win for having done little to no work on either person's side.

So she helped him register to take a reinstatement test, but Monk’s compulsions caused a problem, and he didn’t pass the test in this episode.
