Monk solves the case as people start to get some major deja vu...
Monk is streaming now on Peacock: pck.tv/3JuixBg
From "Mr. Monk And The Class Reunion" (Season 5, Episode 6): Katherine Rutherford walks out of her apartment and notices the elevator is out of order again. A man comes up behind and also notices. Being heavyset, it will take her a while to get down the stairs so she tells the man to go ahead of her, but instead he pushes her down the stairs, where she breaks her neck and dies. The killer breaks a necklace with beads to make it look like she tripped. The next day while checking out the scene, Stottlemeyer and Disher discover the beads. At the scene, they also discover a pin with the number '25' on it. Turns out that Katherine Rutherford is a nurse who worked at the free clinic in Berkeley where Monk also went to school.

Monk Synopsis: Adrian Monk (Emmy®-winner Tony Shalhoub) was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional means to solve the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic and still-unsolved murder of his wife, Trudy, the devastated Monk becomes obsessive-compulsive. His psychological disorder has caused him to develop an abnormal fear of virtually everything: germs, heights, crowds... even milk. Monk's condition costs him his job, but he's back as a police consultant despite the unique challenges he encounters in his everyday life. These challenges lead Monk to hire a personal nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), who is always there to offer her assistance, even with the simplest of tasks (like organizing his sock drawer). Her less-than-subtle prodding keeps the "defective detective" on track in his investigations, as well as in his efforts to convince Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) to allow him to return to the force.

I tell you, Monk may have quirks, but that man was creeping me out from the instant he insisted that Gertrude should be called ‘Trudy’ even though she expressed clearly that she preferred Gertrude! People who completely dismiss other people’s clear feelings bother me far more than people with OCD and other quirks like Monk has! 😞

Actual cop work: Look at ten thousand details, when something matches, poke around and talk to people. Repeat until you get real evidence. It's an example of realism in the show for the cops to see the matching jewellery and immediately want to speak to the owners.

One of the most touching episodes, but possibly the single stupidest crime premise in the entire series. Police can tell how old paper and ink are to the nearest decade. Even if the "Adrian" wasn't a detective, he would've been questioned and told the cops that he was also with a Trudy a long time ago, and new "Trudy" when questioned would've told the cops that she never calls herself that.

@@Ericwvb2 Realistically they would suspect foul play the moment they saw the note. A 25 year old hand written note on regular paper that has been folded up in a box in a basement for that much time is going to be obviously weathered. Not to mention it wouldn't be in "her handwriting" unless she was frozen in time for those 25 years, people change drastically over 25 years including how they write. It all comes down to its a TV show and they need to ignore some realism to make the story more interesting.

Monk's confusion at someone having two dogs 25 years apart with the same name is particularly funny to me. As a kid we got a cat from the local Humane Society nearly 35 years ago and named him; that cat died 15 years later. 6 years ago I went on the website for that same local Humane Society (still living in the same area), and found a cat up for adoption with the same name! Totally forgot about this scene until seeing it again just now, hadn't seen it since adopting my cat.
