I've tried the Squad Leader role twice, because we didn't have a Squad Leader and I figured we wouldn't get very far without any outposts. It went okay, but the chatter on both the squad line and the command line was really hard to follow.

I tried commander some times because I always did on rising storm vietnam 2, but man, this game is totally on another level and if comms are done well you never stop planning and giving tasks to other players. Sometimes you also have to pick the logistical side and sometimes support by building garrys around when everybody is fighting. But yeah, my first match as commander was a disaster with comms, but we managed to win at least. I always asked players to confirm after i repeated, so not to mess up, and there was so much crosstalk on voice chat and people always spelled not clear and very fast. Now I got used to and pick everything. I just make sure when I speak I do slow, separate confusing words and repeat sometimes when there are critical info/tasks. My win rate is like 90% if I start a match as commander. Comms are key, and players doing that are what I love about this game.

Yesterday, first game as squad leader, lvl 1, came out of that game lvl 7. Creating strategic spawn points is key and I found his kit load out was really versatile as well.

I will nearly always jump in an empty squad leader role. It can seem intimidating at first but it's a fantastic role to play. Most squad members will listen to your commands and be grateful to you for taking the role. While command chat can be confusing at times, the information it can provide is invaluable. Teamwork is key in this game. If you are playing this role for the first time, tell your squad, ask advice if needed. The HLL community is very helpful.

Binoculars can also be useful if you have an MG in your squad. This way you help piont to your MG to land suppression to the enemy

​@hll_k18_fin that's how it was with the US too because the MGs were their own squad. It's actually still the same way today. The weapons squad is 4th squad and is made up of 2 medium MG teams (the 240B), 2 AT teams and a squad leader. Each rifle squad also has 2 automatic rifle gunners using the M249SAW as well. But we have more binoculars each team leader usually has their own set and the Assistant Gunners in rifle squad usually has a set as well

Excellent material. HLL is demanding on its player base, squad leaders are a great way to encourage the players to work as a team and to meet the objectives. It's fast pace and demanding, but in the end, gratifying to see the teams working together and communicating. Have you seen "Karmakut" playas squad leader? He has the lingo down pretty good. Your videos should be part of the HLL pre game training for all players. Good luck and thank you for your time and patience.

As a semi involuntary squadleader since the Squad Beta days I have to say that SL in Hell let loose is way more relaxed then in Squad or PostScriptum. You only have to manage getting 5 ducklings over the road not 9. And you dont have to heavily rely on squadmates to place outposts. So it is definetly a role that even a newer player can pick up if it is not taken. Sometimes I just wish that I could for once pick Anti-Tank and be done with it...

Because it would make a lot more sense for people with no idea what’s going on to narcissistically presume they could lead a squad of more experienced players…? Do you see the problem with that? And my god, I cannot begin to count how often other players-who would nevertheless not take on the leadership role themselves!-whine and cry and mewl about a lousy SL instead of growing a pair and taking over themselves. I would never expect some newb to welcome that kind of pressure, but I would find it a welcome surprise if they did, provided they were at least trying to learn in the process. After all, each of us started there once.

Agreed! I definitely recommend jumping into SL even if all you're going to do is drop an OP and then switch back to your preferred class. I will affirm that command chat is annoying at times, but you can limit chatter by using map markers to inform other SLs where enemy targets are located. If you are going to use the chat, your chatter should be limited to lines such as, "Enemy supply drop NE of point, possible garrison located in G8, keypad 5." This is concise, and conveys all of the necessary information. Some squad mates want an SL who gives orders, places move, attack, and defend markers, and engages more with squad chat(these are usually the fun squads), but some squads want you to shut up so they can concentrate on their shooting. As an SL, I try to read the room and lead to the majority of my squad's preferred playstyle.

Squad leader can be extremely fun. Sometimes you get a command channel that's just constantly buzzing, but in my experience, a simple "guys, can we keep it short and pertinent please, I can't hear my squad" is enough to rectify that. So far I've only had one game where I actually had to tell the commander I'd mute him if he didn't simmer down a bit, and that worked. So don't be afraid to (politely) say something when shit gets too distracting.

i recently picked up SL mainly because i join a squad and there isnt one or there will be one for a short while and the back out cause of the difficult situation and give up or they just have to leave and i try and take it more often than not now cause of the load out. Ive also had way better games(lose or a win) when you and your squad are communicating and relaying info to other squads and those squads thank the great call out from the one person from my squad........its also great for my work cause im starting to manage people and it makes great practice for shy guys( or gals) to break the ice and get people talking and a better understanding of how to communicate with upper management command chat) and your employees(your squad)

This is great. I've been dipping my toes into SL. Not super experienced at the game, but I'm good at hunting enemy spawn points and moving around the map without getting murdered. Well.. you know how that goes. lol. I still try to think of the bigger picture and strategy, but defaulting to "look at all these neat toys. even if my squad doesnt listen or give a shit, at least I can help." Squad chatter is a nightmare tho. Usually I just say "hey im new, and Im going to focus on... blah blah." so they at least know what I'm trying to do and can direct the other experienced squads around that. Great vid.

Played a warfare map tonight and my team barely scrapped out a win. The enemy Germans held Hospice for the whole game except for the last 5 mins of the game. My squad accumulated 7700 defensive points by holding artillery battery the entire game with occasional assault squads reinforcing. Extremely satisfying game when both teams are evenly matched!

Earlier today I played squad leader for the first time, and it was incredible. Everyone was to an extent communicating and listening to what I was saying from command down to my unit. It was great, I did not say much other than what I knew and we won in 1 hour on new map defense.

I was very hesitant to take the SL role at first but eventually got over the shyness and now it’s my absolute favorite role by far. It has everything you need to dominate at the start. The Noculars are absolutely the most effective tool you can use in HLL. Plus you also get an SMG, Sidearm, 2 frags, 2 smokes, noculars, bandages, and the melee weapon. The noculars are the main reason to play the role imo.

Dude,after playing like 10 matches HLL and after watching this vid, i finally decided to be a squad leader. We won and we were the second best squad way ahead of all the others in the scoring board. Was a great feeling. I think as a squad leader, you shouldn't expect that everyone in the squad listens to you, but if 1 or 2 are listening its already enough.And the rest of them definitely appreciate the outposts. But it is very exhausting to communicate like that for 1+h. DO NOT PICK SQUAD LEADER IF YOU AINT WANNA TALK OR SET UP OUTPOSTS.

Nice video! I'm a new player and I like to play squad leader role a lot. But I'm yet to learn many things. My two biggest issues are organizing the two different chats at the same time. Sometimes it gets very difficult to hear both from your squad and the command channel, specially when someone has either a loud micro and I can't hear the other or the exact opposite, so I can't hear what the person is saying. The other problem is how the supply works. I have read some things about the supplies, but it's very complex. For instance, I thought that nodes were built by the engeneer class, yet yesterday my teammates kept asking me to call the commander to build them the nodes. So it always gets a bit confusing. In any case, HLL is such a good game, I'm really enjoying it. The squad mechanics are way nicer than in Red Orchestra 2, in my opinion.

It's really not that complicated. Everything that can be build needs supplies, with the only exception being the OP. 3 ways to get supplies: Support dude, Air-dropped supplies from commander or Supply Truck. Supplies need to be within 25m of whatever you wanna build if I'm not mistaken. Very often people will only rely on commander's supplies, which is a MASSIVE mistake since they not only require munitions, they also get seen by the enemy. If you wanna build nodes fast then you have your supply dude drop supplies and build a manpower node first since that will reduce the time he needs to drop supplies again from 5min to 2min. Your best choice would be using a truck however.

@@monoespacial thanks for the reply and the explanations! I'll see if I manage to be a more dynamic squad leader. But yesterday I was on a match and got kicked from the server by the host, I guess. I only made some comments about building a new garrison and then I placed a mark on the map, but people there didn't like, they complained and kicked me. I think I'll only pick the role of SL now when it is available with nobody wanting to do it, because in some matches people can get too serious about it, and no mistakes can be permitted.

It's funny, because when me and the guys started playing last month of course I got pushed to be SL. I've been playing Airsoft for over 10 years in a team so I'm used to most of what happens in the game. Organizing your team, listening to radio chatter and thinking ahead. So an Airsoft game with several teams in a faction and a HLL round is not that different!

I play squad lead whenever i get the chance. I've been playing about two weeks. I have yet to have anyone be a jerk. They may give suggestions, but im always open about being new. I also like to tell people where I'm going to set OP in case someone has something better. Lastly, there is something awesome about spotting with the binoculars, marking, and calling it out only to see everyone who is shooting lay waste to that spot. I spent the last five minutes of an offense with my team defending the point, and i didn't fire a single round but was responsible for countless enemies going down just because of spots. It's fun, and with good command and fellow squads, you can have some great campaigns.

My highest lvl classes are ones that no one wants to play. I’m a lvl 5 squad leader, support and engineer. Everything else is lower than that. Maybe rifleman too. I usually only take squad leader if the SL leaves or no one is making an unlocked infantry squad and I’ve been waiting a while. It’s not that bad or hard but sometimes command chat drives me nuts.

I was playing as SL in my second match and confused as hell but command and my squad helped me out and by the end we were leading the offence and in the next match I was working with arty then I got out in to the role of command in my fourth after that and as someone that really enjoys RTS ordering squads and calling recon and other things like directing armor is so fun.

First game i joined, I created squad was leader, yeah it was garbage first game . Since them ive been joining squads, often without a leader or with one that does nothing and the experience is not good. Getting into a squad with a competent leader is a good experience, ive watched a few tutorials now and am going to step up from now on because not having a leader or one that doesn’t communicate, mark objectives , deploy op’s and/or garrisons is next to useless. Dealing with the comms is going to be the hardest part i think.

How is it that squads can be made that don't have an officer? Does someone make a squad and then immediately change their role? I end up missing out on a squad with a leader as i end up clicking on the first squad. It's usually yet another locked squad for one or two people - i then have to cancel the Yes/No request box and look again. So by the time i've faffed about i end up waiting for a squad. Then when I hop in to one it has no Officer in it! It fills up and i reluctantly take Office to give Outpost and try to help people. All guides and general common sense says i should play most roles to get an idea of them before even taking a squad or commander role - but i'm ending up with a high ranking officer and no experience of anything else!

Yes, people create a squad then leave the squad and jump back in as soon as the squad gets another player. It's the only way to change from being a squad leader to something else.

I found it was really good though, most of the time no one talks so being squad leader I was able to get ppl in the squad communicating more and working on a common goal. squad lead is the only role i ever play and my squadmates love it. Just stay in the back of your squad and give them move and attack orders. Know how to manuever around the map though. otherwise your whole squad will get mowed down easily.

I’ve been playing a couple of weeks now and reached lv 40, it’s been a difficult learning curve which I relied heavily on KZbin as I have no friends that play this game to help me understand it. I have played main as rifleman or the auto rifleman. Never even thought of SL. But I have found 90% of squads don’t talk, 50% of SL don’t talk and don’t drop any OP for us to relocate thus making us a really long run back to the action. 10% of squads has a great SL and is pleasure to be part of the team. Since I mainly get poor squads I have now decided to play solo behind the enemy lines to disrupt and destroy. Winning or losing a game means nothing to me what so ever. I just play the role in my head the best I can and it is so much fun. I will now make a locked squad of one to give me even more options. Really enjoying this game.

There's a few things that annoy me about this game, I'm really good with artillery and I'm always aware of how much munitions the team has and never abuse or spam art, but almost every game in a situation when I know we need art I get shouted at to stop using it by the commander or another squad leader and I'm hitting my targets taking out multiple enemies and no friendlys, we could have hundreds of munitions and they still piss and moan about it, they even spawn on me without communicating and shoot me. It's the same with tanks, I always get left behind or told to get out like no one wants me in on the gun's or even driving, the only time I get to be part of tank crew is when I'm spotter, people in this game really piss me right off.

I’ve started playing SL because my friends don’t really enjoy it and have been kinda stumbling my way through. Somehow people are giving my commendations tho xD Also my squad definitely helped turn the tide of war from a loss to a win, when we decided to stop being a tank crew and go infantry and start building nodes like crazy. We only had 2 during the first 30min of the match and were losing hard, commander was begging for SL’s to build nodes so we just took on that role. Things changed in our favor quickly!

The thing is, no one wants to play Squad Leader. In my Lobbies they always wait till the end of the prep phase for someone to open one up. Sometimes they open one up and immediatly quit to bait people. I am lvl 52 and my Squad Leader is lvl 6. Since the start i never played anything else much. I tryhard as Squadleader so much, commands must be followed. I even play Commander because no one seems to do it. Its a curse for this game in my opinion

I was forced into squad lead because I have 20hours more than my guys I play with (I had 20hours total) now I get confused when I can’t see the other squad orders on the map and get really pissed of at squad leads not passing along info But yh new players should for sure play squad lead even if you don’t want to play it it gives you good experience with what the other roles can do and you pick up a lot in my experience at least

Second game I played brand new I picked sl and wasn't doing bad for knowing nothing, team was good but I raged quit when I couldn't spawn a garrison 200 m from a building. Man I was pissed about that, especially cause I died trying to find a spot, felt lame as hell you couldn't place a garrison by a building. Idk... I rated quit that match and didn't play sl again lol

Just got into this game and I started with Rifleman as most people suggested. It was fun but a little boring. I didn't understand what all the hype was about. Live, die, repeat. Sometimes I would get trapped spawning over and over again at the same garrison and then dying in 10 secs. Then I decided to try SL and it was like I was suddenly playing a different game. Squad Lead IS the game.

I got really overwhelmed... it's constant chatter from officers, commanders, and squads. So I can't hear anyrhing. And anytime I try to get people to follow my orders, half of them don't listen. If that's not bad enough, people who make new squads intentionally leave the squad so they can pick a different class. I cannot stress this enough, I don't wanna be a leader. I'm good at following orders, not giving them. I'll even be the Standard Issue rifleman to avoid squad leader.

I can easily tell you a better class... Machine gunner!!! Nothing better than posting up in a position and mowing down the enemy trying to cross. Need to clear buildings? Grip the bipod and spray. Need to suppress the enemy for your team to move? Spray that trench. Only thing I wish they would do, which isn't just the machine gunners class. Is the B.A.R.... in real life it had the bipod. It was even used like the machine guns depicted in the game. Give us the ability to mount the bipod with the BAR.

If you cant find a squad with an SL Create a locked squad, take SL and then then accept invite requests, these people are more likely to use their microphone than the others. Be open to suggestions from your men but remain decisive and follow the commanders orders. Edit: Kick the little bastards that run off and do their own things from your squad, you need to play as a 6 man unit to succed.

What I really dislike is how you have to level up SL in order to get another weapon besides those SMGs... don't get me wrong SMGs can be great in close distance but I prefer my one shot kill. Also being hearing impaired, it is kinda tough to follow command chat and squad chat because sometimes people will have one convo there and give you info on the other as noob it is tough to know what to do.

Actually I become more often Squad leader that than not, because there always gruppes in the battles that does not have a leader. I always they to it as good as I can even if it is hard for me, due to a damage I have. Lucky enough most people in the grp. want to play a team game, and helps me with advice ect. And yes there are always some who do not listen or don't care. But the worst I have experienced was an idiot player that kept telling me to shut up. (I tried to kick him but failed at that) ps I was just tell them the commanders orders because most of that team was solo players, but the worst was actually that some of the others gave him there vote after battle that we lost. (ps sometime when another guy is Squad leader, they do not talk with the team and often never set up any spawning point at all)

my 2 highest levels are sl and spotter, sl kit is way better but with spotter you get to place op's almost anywhere

I really dislike playing SL. I'd much rather Assault or Auto rifleman but usually play as SL because basically nobody wants the job 90% of the time.

"Chill, it's a damn game" is the argument used by people that don't engage in the minimum amount of teamplay required to have fun in this. It's what I'm told after I've built 12 garrisons and no one else has built a single one. It's kinda hard to "chill" when you can't even spawn in the game. And it's hard for it to even FEEL like a game when you're running around everywhere because not a single other squad leader is building garrisons.

I'm not too shy to try it, but my problem with it is all the chatter. I can't hear myself think. And why is that a big deal in HLL specifically? Because HLL's biggest asset IMO is it's atmosphere and immersion, which is probably why you get so many players in HLL that RP or don't tryhard at all. Once you're in voice hell, you're forced out of the immersion and then the whole thing becomes a lesser experience. I remember when I was brand new and followed a SL around that did almost nothing but place garrisons. And we won that game easily, but it was super boring and I realized that when it comes to HLL, I'm to some extent willing to trade my winning chances for immersion. This sort of weird dichotomy is special to HLL IMO and raises some interesting design questions. It has certainly split the player base down the middle a lot of times, and generated a lot of frustration. People are playing the same game, but not for the same reasons.

I'm one of those SLs who will place 20+ garrisons in a match. The problem is other squad leaders just don't build them, forcing one squad to handle the entire thing on their own. I've won matches multiple times specifically due to placing a key garrison at the right time. However, I agree it's not the most entertaining. But then again, if one single other squad is helping build them, it's a non issue. The voice chat... can be a good or bad experience. I don't think you'll ever have VC with very heavy roleplaying like in other milsims. If people talk too much, I always call them out on it.

@@monoespacial I've advocated for a different garrison/spawn system before. I think that it's not a good thing to tie up a mechanic essential to the outcome to a monotone piece of labour that may or may not be picked up by individuals sacrificing their fun for the greater good. Especially not in an immersion heavy game like HLL. They should somehow keep the player generated spawns, but find a way to trade the tediousness and time consumption for something that makes more sense without dumbing down the game. It should be very possible to do.

Is it just me or did the game look better back in 2021. Or am I seeing the came through rose tinted glasses. I play HLL and it just looks like crap now. Probably these LODS'S. What else am I missing. Did they water this game down for the sake of performance it no longer holds it's beauty?

No one wants to be squad leader in this game, all chat is the same volume and you cant turn down individual channels its dumb. As someone who has good SL and bad SL games, I catch alot of flak for not calling out enough points or whatever, to me SL is annoying because its really hard to hear. I only play SL when a person ducks out from it...
