For anyone who found this later on. I’ve owned the Monolith 10 for 5 months. The THX toggle setting is great for music and the Extended toggle is better for movies. This speaker is very linear or “flat” which is perfect. Music roles off at 30 Hz so the THX toggle helps to slightly bump up the region before 30 Hz so it doesn’t just plummet in dB “volume”. The Extended toggle will get you the deepest bass for this speaker at whatever dB “volume” level. However you’re mid bass will dip or be more linear than what you are used too. There is a slight trade off with THX vs Extended but I find that each have their own purpose. This is a heavy woofer. The magnet is quite large for a 10 in. In the AVR I had to set the subwoofer dB level to +10 just for the subwoofer to recognize the signal. This sub doesn’t just turn on like a Klipsch but it needs to detect a signal.

@@Audiolympianthis goes to the quality of Monolith. If you rub your thumb around the rubber surround you’ll feel a ribbed interior. My 12 in Klipsch sub only has a simpler rubber surround. Hell you can poke it in because it’s so thin. I have the R-112SW and compared to it the Monolith 10 is very overbuilt.

@@Audiolympian what hits harder SVS or Monolith movies only?
@Audiolympian
@Audiolympian 3 жыл бұрын
@@HPMIKE55 good question. The only Svs I have is pb-16 so that would be an uneven match to my monolith 10 but judging by the way this 10 hits I’d have to believe they would be very close in comparison and possibly good hit stronger. I would love to hear monolith’s 16 inch sub it looks rather imposing with a different cabinet design compared to Svs. Then again they do have the double 15 inch subwoofer that I’m sure is just madness in a box.

I thought about a couple of these subs...instead I went with car subs and a crown amp. two 10" NVX 600rms subs each in a ported box tuned to 30hz. Won't hit the low notes like the monolith but still, makes my living room rumble like crazy

@@Audiolympian yea I love the tv series they came out with breaths new life into ODB. I wanted to ask: I initially setup the crossover on my reciever (pioneer elite vsx lx103) to 80hz but I was confused do I set the dial on the sub to 80hz as well and turn the crossover on or keep it off. Also the thx reference level seemed under powered so I turned it to +0 should my sub be that high? The tone level on my reciever is set to +2 for the sub I was using black panther as a test movie last night and a lot of the sub bass that I wasn't even aware of I heard but a lot of the mid bass I thought the sub would add to it really didn't I'm thinking it's just a settings tweak on my end
@Audiolympian
@Audiolympian 2 жыл бұрын
@@Wu-TangLAN oh yeah the tv series was awesome. I took me a little while to figure out who each rapper was but still a great show. So on the sub if you have your crossover set through your receiver then turn your crossover all the way up on the sub so they don’t cancel each other out. As far as you sub level that has a lot to do with your room as well. If a bigger room with open walls then yes put it up high. I keep my sub levels at usually +3/+4 Personally I didn’t like the thx option even though that was supposed to have better bass. So I keep it off. However the lack of mid bass I think is just the performance of the sub. I found it lacked in mid bass as well. I guess that’s the risk vs reward for a $500 sub. It’s definitely a house shaker though. Hope that helps.

@@Audiolympian Ok that makes since, I do have a open great room area so I'll play with the level and tone to fine a sweet spot. I guess I understand now what the reviews mean by lacking mid bass. More and more people seem to use the extended eq setting so this will be a fun weekend. I didn't even mention the phase dial haven't had any issues yet with phase so time will tell Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions I really appreciate it

@@Wu-TangLAN my pleasure. Anything else, feel free to reach out. Phase is pretty simple. If your sub is in a corner phase should be at 0 so it lessens the chance of boomyness (if that’s a word) if it’s more open and not too much around dial the phase higher to your liking. Enjoy your weekend

Can anyone explain to me why you would hook a sub to a pre amp if the sub has a dedicated amplifier? Thank you.
@Audiolympian
@Audiolympian 6 ай бұрын
Good question. A preamp is basically a glorified source selector, like cd player, dvd player, streamer things like that. Those sources plug into the preamp, the preamp plugs into the amplifier then to the speakers. So contrary to the name a preamp does not amplify hence the “pre” but it does control volume. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching

Hi, can you maybe help.. I can't choose between the 10 and 12 inch.. does the 10 inch really make a impact when watching movies. Or is it just "nice" My room is 9 ft by 29ft and 8ft high.. And the Monolith are in discount. 10 inch = 550 euro (800 normal price) 12 inch = 750 euro (1200 normal price) Subwoofer position is 8 feet from my sitting position What would you recommend? Thank you for the help

You have a good size room. I’d go with the 12 inch. Bigger driver and cabinet for more depth. The 10 inch impacts well but only certain times. The 12 should definitely punch harder. Hope that helps.

Great video, ported subs are never good for music, porting is a cheap way to increase base, and in 1980 if you had a ported speaker they were Garbage

They sound great for music. The PA speakers that you here in a live concert are all ported. All major home theater subs are ported to go deep. Sure you can get some sealed 15-18” but ported isn’t to be scoffed at.

I didn't even know they existed in 1980. I was a 14 year old kid then and would buy the cheapest speaker with the largest woofer in an attempt to get decent bass response. Had several with 15" woofers but I had a very limited budget so most of my equipment pretty much sucked.
