Guess it was because it's a reverse horizontal cut (for right-handers) so it's really difficult to get it right. They're probably all laughing because they know how difficult that last cut is and have all struggled with it.

I took some iaido classes for a few years and this was pretty accurate. Last hour of class was usually bringing the damp tatami mats out and setting them up for cutting. It might look like a lot of their swings don't have a lot of power behind them, but they do. It's all coming from the lower body like the hips and back. Those smooth casual swings would cut your hands off. Though generally when not cutting Tatami, practice iaito are used.

From what I read, most of the things like the graceful movements and all were basically non-existent. Samurai fought closer to how a gangster in Brazil fights with a machete. Of course, most of the skills still were preserved, but there was a lot more expedience in their movements since speed is life. I also believe they didn't slash as much as they stabbed with the swords. There is no evidence to say either way, but I just can't imagine a cut being very useful considering most wore some form of armor especially if going to war. A stab would be far more effective. Just like IRL military, when they teach how to fight with a knife, they teach stabbing to end a fight as it is much more effective than cutting and waiting for the enemy to bleed out.
@igordias68812 жыл бұрын
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj slashing was useful at that time bcs they were obviously a lot stronger, faster and more precise, through an armor plate of course stabbing will work, but imagine the damage when they land a clean slash on the joints of the armor, such as elbows, shoulders, knees and specially the neck, shit, a sword war must been just outrageous, vicious, brutal, demonic, we are just blessed to live in such peaceful time..
@saywhat6642 жыл бұрын

I'm no expert but it seems that the aim here is to be able to cut the roll as many times as possible, as cleanly and quickly as possible. Because during a real battle/flurry attack you never know which strike may actually land due to the opponent defending, so all of the swings during a flurry must be accurate, powerful and fast enough to slice the roll... And maintaining endurance of that must be hard when wielding a katana those things are not light - I've seen the hands of people who train with them and they are all calloused up! Props to these guys doing this in their elderly ages too with so much skill
@Sapreme3 жыл бұрын
It's a display of technique and skill more than it is a display of power. Katana are not like axes, if you try to chop with them like you would an axe then it will not make a clean cut. You have to "slice" as well as "chop" in the same motion (kind of like a fishing rod, instead of an axe), and you have to make sure the slice is straight otherwise you will lose force and might not complete the cut. I hope this makes sense.
@ddcll95383 жыл бұрын
This is much harder than it looks. It's kind of using a violin bow. Every movement of the blade you must carefully calibrate your arms to swing at the exact angle to keep the blade straight down the cut. This takes an enormous amount of practice to achieve consistently.
@airon33482 жыл бұрын
Very sure, it is no way easy; however, I am somewhat surprised. Some of them look like veterans and yet, it seems as if they struggle to control the weight of their own swords. _Hasuji_ and _tenouchi_ seem constrained and the general tameshigiri executed are therefore poor: hasty and umbalanced body-sword or slow and dull (jammed blade).

My best guess is that the demonstration called for the swordsman to do two slashes to the tatami mat from a sitting position, one with a cut from draw, and a follow up cut. That swordsman in that particular demonstration did the draw cut and the follow up cut, but then did two additional cuts probably just from instinct, or maybe he misunderstood the demonstration. While the cuts were impressively clean, it was not what the judges were looking for, so I believe he was disqualified. I'm not familiar with all the terms or rules of this demonstration, nor do I speak Japanese to any degree of fluency (I think the judge afterwards said something among the line of "zero points") but that's my best guess from context.

THESE SWORDS ARE SO SHARP THEY COULD CUT YOUR HEAD OFF WHILE YOU WERE STILL SPEAKING IN MIDDLE OF A SENTANCE & YOU WOULD STILL BE ABLE TO CONTINUE SPEAKING EVEN AFTER DECAPETATED ALLOWING YOU TIME TO FINISH WHAT YOU WERE SAYING BEFORE YOU REALIZED YOU ARE DEAD! IF HE SLICED YOUR HEAD OFF YOU WOULD NOT EVEN REALIZE IT BECAUSE THE BLADE IS SO SHARP YOU WOULD BE DEAD BEFORE BEING ABLE TO FEEL PAIN OR EVEN REALIZE WHAT HAPPENED!

It's actually a bit saddening watching some of these guys struggle due to age.

@Adolf Hitler True enough. It's just a depressing thought to work so hard at something and have it eventually go away. Mortality sucks.

Actually cutting through something cleanly is extremely difficult. People who don't train like them or as long as them probably wouldn't even be able to cut through the mats consistently.

Are they using real gendaito for these cuts Or are they production swords. How much do these practitioners spend on there live blades and where do they get them from. I’m in America. And I have a bunch of Chinese made katana. I cant see myself spending 10k on a real Japanese made katana to cut tatami mats for class. Is that what they do.
I hope the casual watchers appreciate how damn hard it is to cut as clean and as fast as theyre doing here. Those katanas are heavy. Untrained wrist would wobble from the jarring impact of the cut. You cant follow through, the blade would get stuck and the cutting power is lost.
Excellent job! I can tell that most of these men would be very professional in their younger years. The first mat they cut is usually perfect. The second one is where the mistakes happen. That's due to physical limitations because of age. Younger of the old men, the short guy in the video that cut the mats perfectly... most of these older men would have been at least equal to this guy's ability if not better.

Will I be allowed to learn and pass dans? ( I am black and don't know if it's culturally ok for me to learn traditional Japanese martial art under Japanese master)

how long do you train before doing stuff like this?
