This amp is ridiculously cool. I've had it for quite a while now, back when it first showed up on the Monoprice website. My wife gave it to me for Christmas 2018. I love it so hard. I practice at home on the 1 W setting with the volume and gain set to around 5. Super drive tones. Glad you enjoyed it.

This is how all amp demos should be done. We don't need ten minute over driven solos, just how everything works and sounds. It's certainly the best demo for this amp I've seen. The amp's available here in England under the Harley Benton label, the house brand of one of Europe's biggest retailers, Thomann. Well done Jimmy, I posted a similar review last year but I closed my account after it was hacked. I've only just realised that when you wipe an account all your posts are wiped too. You were great in Shenandoah too.

Thank you for this demo. I'm a beginner player just learning the guitar at 67. I appreciate your playing and especially not having to sit through another video of someone doing metal. I like a simple clean tone. This amp definitely does that well. I'm not sure of how this amp will hold up for someone just playing at home. It no longer is under the Monoprice label. I know they have it on their site, but listed as stage right and on harley bentons site. Anyway, thanks again for a honest review and some great playing. I see some people complain that their amps are noisy. Heres a few tips. Buy shielding tape and tape the inside area where the chassis goes. Buy new shielded RCA cable Also theres a hum pot inside the amp and that can come not set right and will make the tone noisy. But i found this solved all the noise issues, the noise with the reverb was still there with stock pan, but with a 3 spring MOD in it there is no noise like before even at 10.

@@JimmyStewart1 I think folks are getting some of theirs with the hum pot inside the amp not set correctly, but i did find the reverb added noise. After the RCA cable change that noise was gone. Also its not shielded inside so def that tape mad a world of difference. Ive even brought this to a few different places recently just to see if it was still quiet and yeah. Also the stock tubes, although JJ's were nothing compared to the 6n2p and 6p14p tubes i put in the amp. That changed this amp from a good amp to a great amp. Im still shocked im talking so highly of this amp and its lil brother 5watt. But i own a lot of different tube amps and this is the first time ive gotten anything on the cheaper side like this and im blown away. These 2 amps and the Bugera T5 are unreal. Dont get me wrong its not as good as my Twin Reverb etc. But for what it is, it sounds much better than one would imagine and i think this is a stage worthy amp. THe smaller brother is great for recording with a hint of reverb ;-) THanks for the video :-)

I didn't know Firefly had any sort of affiliation with these. I'm just an old tube amp snob and in a few tube amp groups. People tend to link these in those groups a lot. I finally succumbed and bought mine and sold a VOX AC 4 TV just to fund it. I'm in no way what so ever disappointed. These are awesome.

I just bought the 5-watt little guy and think it sounds very good. I have owned my Blues Jr. ( many gigs) since 2000. It is actually too big for my back and my gigs, so now, ALL small amps & all good. But after hearing the demo of the 15 watt Stage Right- this amps overdrive and Reverb sound much better than my BJ. I use good OD pedals with my BJ, but I don't think I'd need them with this amp.

It’s a great amp Joe, and weighs in @ 25 lbs so pretty easy on the back as well! I have both this 15W and it’s little brother the 5W and both are great amps at a bargain price. Monoprice has just increased pricing across the board (who hasn’t) but still very reasonable for what you are getting. Tough to beat…. I just got the 5 watter literally to hear if it sounded as good as the 2 small SS amps I use for gigs- but I wanted the 5 watts to keep things really portable, plus push that one 6V6 to put out real tube tone. I have a small pedalboard with OD>Tremolo >Reverb ready to go for gigs ( basically creating a 'VibroChampReverb' amp!) - plus I have a 10" Ext. Cab, if/when needed. All good

In my opinion, the Monoprice Stage Right 15w is probably the best overall value in a all valve 15w combo out there right now! They now come shipped stock with JJ tubes, the 2 spring reverb is actually pretty darn good, the stock Celestion 80/20 will do the job, and attenuation along with a effects loop is frosting on the already tasteful cake! Congrats and enjoy your new amp once you receive it! It takes pedals extremely well, both through the front end and effects send/receive along with a cab out! I think you are going to enjoy it! Sounds like a good amp, and i almost ordered it, but then i played a Vox Vt40x (tube in preamp), and it has great tones and effects.. incredible sound, and very practical for home use.. It has that Vox chime, but can get a lot more tones too!

Jimmy, Just an FYI. Monoprice has started making this 15W Tube Amp with a Celestion Super 65 speaker. That speaker magnet is specified by the manufacturer as weighing two pounds less than the Celestion Eighty 90. Therefore, I would think the speakers are dramatically different. Also, they are indicated as "Non-Returnable" on Amazon. So, the buyer needs to be careful, if they are buying based on reviews of the previous model. But, it could sound even better I guess.

A youtuber suggest a great setting for Fender Champ amps which seem to apply here as well. Turn the tone controls all the way off, turn the volume up. So try the following for the Monoprice. Set TONE to 5 (or higher), Set BASS to 0, MID to 5 (or higher), TREBLE to 0. Set Gain to 10, Volume to 5 (or higher). By keeping the Bass and Treble at zero and playing with the Mids this creates a whole new amp (JCM 800 ish ??)

Hi Billy! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. In fact, Thomann (Harley Benton’s) version of this amp is identical. They just rebadged theirs for the European market. Biggest difference is where you live and your location for use, as the Monoprice is designed for 110/120 US type voltage and the Harley Benton is for 220/240 European type voltage. I just picked up one of these a couple weeks back for $175 used, and watching this video because one of my buddies forgot I bought one. They're surprisingly awesome amps for being only $250 brand new. I mostly use mine for surfy stuff and pedals, as the amp has loads of headroom just like you said. The drive and reverb could be better, but easy fixes if you're a modder, and a MOD 3 spring reverb tanks are only $30 and a piece of piss to install.

@@JimmyStewart1 My other amp is an Egnater Rebel 20 head with a 2x10 greenback cab. I actually sold a VOX AC4 TV just to fund the Monoprice 15, and enjoy it so much better as the AC 4 lacked the headroom this Monoprice has in abundance. My Egnater is great, but having a smaller combo around is nice. I can't say enough how pleased I am with it, and it just goes to show that we don't always have to spend exorbitant amounts of money for a decent amp. Gonna give your other video a watch now. I retubed the preamp 12ax7 tubes in this 15 watt amp as its brand new ! This amp has a lot of gain and breaks up early on the gain at about 3.5 so i wanted it a little cleaner and sweet highs but it had sweet highs as is ! I have vintage and new tubes so i had a vintage strong Mullard 12ax7 that had too much gain for V1 so i had a real surprisingly sweet sounding 7025 china made tube in V1 and V2 i put the Mullard to breakup nice and correctly and i put a great phase inverter in V3 a Sovtek 12ax7LPS tube with balanced triodes . I set the gain at 3.5 about and low volume at home and never touched if for 45 minutes and no overdrive pedals used but a Decca Delay in the FX loop level at 4 low to give that full room concert sound ! Wow it still would breakup but sounded clean , i would say it now had more sustain on the high note bends and was very sweet without any harshness at all just great sounding tone ! It came as a great sounding amp and now its amazingly outstanding and my ACETONE OD pedal wails great rock without abunch of gritty OD but sweet singing notes and meshing chord harmonics and heavy rock sounding ! The Monoprice 15 watt amp is the champion of affordable 15 watt guitar amps as is stock ! New ones come with the 70/80 speaker and JJ power tubes and mine had a JJ 12ax7 in V1 a China 12ax7 in V2 and a JJ phase inverter in V3 and sounded great stock ! I tried a Celestion creamback G12 M 8 ohm 65 watt speaker cabinet with it and had to quickly cut the bass down abunch as that speaker had added low end response and was overpowering ! That speaker sounds great but my Vintage 30 will be better i think well see next test ! Over the years i got hooked on bidding on good vintage 12ax7 tubes as the different brands have a different voice ! I have about 40 5551 tubes and 12ax7 including RCA long blackplate which is the best most colorful beautiful tone of and 12ax7 made $75 each for a good one ! Some great sounding 12ax7s for guitar amps is the Tungsram / Phillips / Sylvania long black plate tube / Raytheon / 1950s GE / Yugo / Ei Edison / and i found many other brands and types were not suitable for guitar amps ! Some tube preamp sockets should not have high gain 12ax7s in or it can badly distort the tone such as the tube driven FX loop and Reverb drivers or other non gain function tubes ! Adding gain where it does not belong ruins the tones you seek ! I discovered the high gain problem with my Rebel 30 amp head , i put JJs in those 12ax7 positions ! I was wondering why the highs sounded smeared kind of and if was the Phillips 12ax7 in the FX loop !

@@JimmyStewart1 The easy way to bias this amp is to use two bias probes ! The first one measures the plate voltage then remove it and put in a grid bias probe that shows milliamps in the 0-200 Ma range and after going online to the bias calculator get the Ma recommended setting for class A/B amps by putting in the plate voltage as it will give the 70% bias in milliamps and set it there as the calculator tells you exactly right ! Do not touch any componets only the tubes after it is off !

Probably check and make sure but I think that you can use 6aq5 power tubes too. El84s are 6bq5 for those who don't know. Anyway, the 6aq5 will be a bit smoother, warmer. 6bq5s being brighter, punchier. I've had several low watt amps and always preffered the 6aq5 (which is basically a small bottle 6v6.) Let us know if u try it....

I like the 70/80 speaker after break in. I think they get a bad rap. I think these sound better than the Fender Blues Jr and cost a lot less. This little amp has a great blues and classic rock tone.

Some of the others I watched were using the 1w setting or a guitar that had pickups I don’t normally use, I’m a vintage style PU guy and it’s a bit hard to get a idea about cleans with high output ceramic PUs but the P90s, Tele and PAFs helped a lot.

Of course KZbin compression and other factors don’t help, but I still think it gives the viewer more of a “real” sound then sending the audio track to a computer or miking the amp to send to a DAW for processing. I’ve had several 15 watt amps like a Vox ac15 and a Tweed Deluxe and the 1w setting would be great for a home amp but 15 watts from a tube amp will do well in small clubs or jams with a drummer so I think you’d have a versatile amp with this one

Accidentally bumped mine and how to make some crackling noises every once in awhile it made a big explosion sound I thought I blew a tube or something blew up but it sounds fine it sounds fine it's weird the tubes look good I don't know

Hi Donnie…the “explosion sound” you heard was probably just the reverb tank rattling after you bumped it. I would double check your input/outputs to the reverb tank and be sure they are tight. Then carefully turn the amp upside down (amp off and unplugged of course) and check that each tube is fully inserted and the tube clamps are tight. See if that helps…thanks so much for stopping into the channel. 🎸👍

Nice review Thank you. I would have liked you to play with the EQ a little to demonstrate the tonal possibilities a bit more, and also to demo it at 15W. It may be your preference, but it appeared a little heavy on the bass side and lacking a little on treble to my ear.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Though I have yet to use this amp in a “live band” situation, I can say that it can get quite loud. In the studio, I use it in the 1W setting. I have had the amp in the 15w setting and the volume up to nearly half, and it was very, VERY loud. I would think it would be just fine for rehearsal with a drummer, small club use. You could always mic it up if needed as well. As far as “getting dirty”, many have replaced the V1 pre-amp position 12AX7 with a 12AY7 to allow more “clean gain” prior to the amp starting to breakup. Hi Gus…it’s the same amp rebadged under the Harley Benton name for the European market. Only difference outside of the cosmetic badging as far as I know is the voltage. Not sure what brand of tubes the HB ships with….thanks for stopping into the channel! 🎸👍

been looking at these for a little while. I saw a guy from america give similar demonstration. He suggested changing the first tube in the amp for a branded one which has a good affect overall to the sound. He also demonstrated changing the whole tube arrangement for branded tubes . all interesting stuff. But is it too loud for the bedroom playing ??

john piggott I don’t think it would be too loud John, as you can set it to the 1 Watt setting and still get some overdrive sounds without knocking the walls down. The idea of changing out the 1st position tube is so that you can get a bit more headroom before it starts to break up. I have a new set of JJ’s to put in it when the stock tubes decide to give up the ghost, as I am happy with the stock tubes for now. Thanks for watching and commenting, appreciate it! Stay safe! 👍

Hi Steven…thanks for watching and commenting. There are really two camps on the biasing. Some will tell you that anytime to change a tube you should re-bias. I am not of that camp especially when you are talking about a small wattage amp using the same type tubes. The Monoprice amps come biased a bit “cold” from the factory to give a bit of reassurance between whatever stock tubes they are getting. These have changed over the years based on supply. I have been using my amp for over 3 years now since I swapped out to the JJ’s and no issues…nothing running hot…no bias changes. Hope that helps…thanks so much for stopping into the channel!! 🎸👍

Thanks for watching and commenting! In the winter months, I try to keep the humidity up over 40%. It gets quite dry with the heat on if I don’t run humidifier. In the summer months I run a dehumidifier and try to keep the humidity below 55%. I find between 40-55% humidity keeps my guitars happy! 😎👍

Great demo thx! I have the Monoprice 15, a Champion 100 and a Boss Katana 100 (212) and they all have their strengths and weaknesses though I smile from ear to ear when I get that instant tube satisfaction from the simplest and cheapest of the 3 amps (Monoprice). It's basically a set it and forget it great sounding amp IMHO! How about a Monoprice 15 (w pedals) vs the Boss Katana shootout?

Drip N Rip Thanks for watching and commenting! The Monoprice is a great little amp, and yes, you have to grab one when they come in stock pretty quickly! As for Firebird Music, (Firefly) no, I am not associated with them. The are a small company out of China, who are listening to their customers in trying to provide decent guitars for a very reasonable price. They only produce small batches of guitars a few times per year, so they are also tough to get your hands on, especially since the pandemic. Depending on what type of pups you are looking for, the Firefly FFTH or FFPTH are both very nice for the $$. One has regular single coils, the other has P90’s. IYV also has some very nice models, available on Amazon. Some with standard single coils, others with humbuckers. Both those companies make good instruments, and honestly, much more guitar than the price would indicate. I have a number of reviews on both Firefly, IYV, Harley Benton (Thomann). Check them out. Just did a review of the IYV Mustang Hybrid (very cool) and the IYV thin line Telly that is also a great little guitar! Be careful if looking at these models on eBay. Lot’s of scalpers buy them and resell them for jacked up $$$. Buy IYV direct from Amazon....Firebird (Firefly’s) also on Amazon, but they also have their own storefront www.guitarsgarden.com

I bought the Mono 15 a yr ago. I also have a Fender Champion 100. The Mono is my first dip into tube amps. I was of the mind that people were full of beans and there wasnt going to be much difference. However, i now feel there is. The only thing i have done to the Mono is change tubes to jj's. I thought about changing the speaker but ive spent alot of time breaking the 70/80 in and i am liking it. I have asked around but have not gotten an answer to a question i have. Can i hook my Mono and my Champion together? Both have effects loops. I would like to have real stereo in my effects. Do you know if this can be done with what i have? Great vid thanks for the demo.

I ended up having to change the tubes. I had the amp for a month when it lost half of its volume. I know that it was only the power tubes that needed changing but i decided to change them all. Sounds great and should last awhile.

Thanks for watching and commenting! I find the amp to be very quiet. Of course this also depends on the guitar being used, and the pickups being utilized. Single coils, P90’s, humbuckers, etc….nothing changes as far as any inherent amp noise between the attenuation of 1w to 15w….of course any noise coming from the guitar/pups or pedal board signal chain will be “louder”….😎 The amp truly is a bargain….probably the best value 15w all valve amp out there. Ruben Ocasar Thanks for watching and commenting! My Laney is an AC30, with 2/12’s. That was my main gigging amp. I love it! My Monoprice is a bit more “tameable” in the studio, so I use it more these days as I can set the wattage down to get some overdrive without shaking the walls with the Laney. I can also tell you the Laney cost me well over a grand when I bought it back in the early 90’s and the Monoprice (based on the Laney CUB) was less than $200 last year. Both amps are great, but at this point I use the Monoprice more often simply because of the convenience in the studio. Glad you enjoyed the video, and once again thanks for watching and commenting! They both sound good, but the Monoprice is simply more versatile.

The Monoprice is powered by two EL84 power tubes, (along with 3 12AX7 pre-amp) tubes, so think early British Invasion band sounds (Mullard, Vox, Laney) style chime and overdrive sounds. Early American valve amps used 6L6 power tubes. You will get some good sounds from this...it’s basically a Laney Cub12 in a different cabinet, without the Laney badge (or price).

You said it's kind of like the Laney cub 12, but I'm here to let you know that it is an identical knock off. I own the amp same model that you have with the forward facing knobs. I have done many modifications and I use the Laney Cub schematic for reference. The Reverb and effects Loop is not powered by the 12AX7. They are both driven by an operational amplifier, completely solid state but dependable.

@@JimmyStewart1 every component on main board is even labeled the same as the Laney schematic. C1 C2 R1 R2 and such. Every single trace that connection is identical. The only difference being is that the copy is from the Laney cub 12 not the cub 12r the effects Loop and Reverb tank circuit is the only thing that has been added to the Monoprice version. I would have to take the amp apart and map out a schematic for it but I know that it contains two operational amplifiers one is for input and the other for output. I believe that the first one operates the effects Loop and the second one operates the Reverb tank.... even the manual that you receive with the Monoprice amp is a complete word for word plagiarism of the Laney owner's manual LOL

They have a 5W as well with a 8” Celestion (think Fender Champ) that is also a killer little valve amp with a smaller foot print depending on your needs! @@JimmyStewart1 Hi Jimmy. Yes, I saw you did a review on the smaller model. I didn't watch the whole video yet as I needed to catch up on a few things, but I will finish it for sure. I do have two really nice amps for recording, (Mesa Boogie Mark IV and a hand wired Red Plate amp (Black Loop model), which most people never heard of that brand. They are a very small 2 person company in Arizona. That model is about 40 watts w/2 6L6s, but it can also accept 6V6 power tubes. I am currently looking for a tube amp that has a different EQ voicing as my two current amps for some alternate lead sounds... Thanks. Phil NYC Area

@@uptownphotography I 5W Monoprice uses a single 12ax7 in the pre and a single 6v6 power tube. No eq on the amp, just a vol/tone. It’s more “fender” sounding and voiced IMHO The 15w uses the 3 12ax7’s in the pre and dual EL84’s in the power sockets. Sort of a mix of VOXY tones clean, and a bit Marshally when overdriven. Of course the 15w has more tonal options, along with drive controls, eq, decent reverb and effects send/return. Both have the attenuation feature and cab extension out! Can’t say I have ever heard of “Red Plate” amps either….thanks for the info! 👍🎸

@@jamescogley1637 Ha! No.... It’s just to keep the humidity level in the studio up (during the heating season) so my guitars don’t crack (shrinking wood). It also cuts down on static electricity. I run a de-humidifier in the summer months to allow them to drink! 👍.

Jimmy S I thought your playing was good, but I thought the tone and gain was in 2 words: “ very uninspiring “. Hoping to hear some characteristics, but nothing. Sounds like my Peavey StudioPro ( 2005) red stripe. Not a total dog, but perfect for the Ventures, or The Beach Boys. Neil Diamond. Maybe playing clean, as in, Kenny Burrell or Charlie Christian Not for Bad Company or ZZ Top Maybe an amp Tom petty would use. Or John Fogerty.

I have since this video done a few things to bring the amp a bit more “life” though for me, having a “clean” platform to start is what I am looking for in a small studio amp. I have swapped the tubes, added a 3 spring reverb and an additional Celestion V-30 cab to it. Still less than $400 all in. It takes pedals exceptionally well, so I can get some tones like you described and perhaps not displayed in this particular video. I still think, even with the price increases these past years, that this is the best all valve 15w combo out there for the $$…appreciate your stopping into the channel and sharing your thoughts! @@JimmyStewart1 I have this amp; wanted to see if anybody could put some ooomphhh into it. Mehhh. As I said, you completely nailed Slow dancing in a burning room. My ears totally perked up. But 25 minutes and it was a big nothing. I’d like to hear it juiced up with a Pinnacle or Angry Charlie and a delay. Sounded so much like my 2005 Studio Pro, I just want to sell them both

crank the volume, lower the gain. use a booster pedal = amazing tone. Power tube dynamics is where the magic happens. Preamp distortion is gay
