it's base on the political war of Colombia, this is a real problem

Carlos Miguel Ugalde this war is as much political as it is a violent.

I’m Colombian. The political subtext is there. It’s hard, like our reality. But it’s a depiction of the human experience through the elements and conditions, that transform kindness and Evil into life or death. And the cinematography: wow! My favorite movie of the year.

Hey man! Very good video and review, as a Colombian myself its special seeing MONOS being recognized as the fantastic film it is, im glad you touched upon the great sound production of the film. I will add to the MONOS narrative by specifying the civil conflict the movie takes place in, the political undertones of the movie you mention are basically the 50 armed conflict between far left guerrilla groups, far right paramilitary forces and the army/government- the kids are part of the guerrilla though i love how the movie never specifies their enemy or their specific faction, love from Bogota

This film has just come out in London UK and I've already seen it twice, agreeing 100% with your review, blimey o'reilly! As well as standing as a great film in its own right there is another subtext, a country where the Columbian President gets a Nobel Peace Prize in 2016 after 260,000 killed and six million displaced. A film that describes a real life that exists way beyond Lord of the Flies of a norm of child soldiers and hostage taking. The Mica Levi soundtrack and the film's soundscape is simply perfect.

You know this movies shouldn’t be compared to the lord of the flies nor to apocalypse now. Those stories aren’t about kids that were drawn by a guerrilla organization or as some may call a terror it organization. You may think this is awesome fiction but this is actually what happens in Colombia and a movie that serves as an apology to that kind of armed groups shouldn’t be praised as much as this movie is being praised, (to be clear) I personally disliked the movie as it sensors who this armed organization really is. I’m not saying they should have been portrayed as villains but at least make more explicit the damage they make to the armed conflict Colombia has been through. Yet this is just my opinion, as I would like the rest of the world not to compare these characters to fictional creations as they are reality in Colombia.

I totally agree with you. That`s no fiction. This is a reality.

The organization isn’t depicted clearly bc it’s all meant to be ambiguous, the director said he wanted to keep certain things left to interpretation because he wanted to make the movie feel almost timeless, and by adding labels to things like the organization and the civil conflict that’s going down, the movie becomes more linear. Also it puts us in the shoes of the monos because as teens fighting in a civil war they wouldn’t really understand the implications of war and what they are fighting for. They are soldiers at the end of the day. So I think that the director took these certain creative freedoms for the purpose of telling the story.
