I like learning all of this from you now that I'm learning amp repair as well......Especially with the ceramic resister leg transferring heat to the mosfet, because I was having the same concern, & now I think this just answered my questions/concerns about the heat building in the fet right next to one of these resisters. Good job dude! This 5 year old video has helped alot!

I remember when 1KW rms was considered a massive system for a car. I mean even the nightclub I worked at about 16 years ago only had something like 10KW in total and that was about 1000 capacity venue (4 bass cabs with two by two 15" drivers in ported enclosures in each one, plus four flown mids and tops). But 10KW in a car, that's just insane!!!!

I love watching your videos, makes me think I'm okay working on my "amp". It's a 300kw induction furnace, sorta like 2 DVC subs, the furnaces have 2 coils each and generate magnetic fields to heat the metal
@lewzero6 жыл бұрын
Mostly zinc and aluminum. It's crazy inside, the 9 big power capacitors are about 3ft tall, the main rails are half inch thick and 2 ft wide solid copper bars. It will melt a metric ton in about 3 hours if it's cold, 2 if hot cycling. Our power bill is somewhere around $4000 a month
@lewzero6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 480 volts, 3 phase. 300kw should equal something like 360 amps if I'm doing my math right

Good god man! Thats wild. So is it powered by a giant SMPS or a mains transformer? Is it water cooled?

It has it's own dedicated transformer, it's huge, main power out back is 25kv, and that gets it's own lines. I feel like Marty McFly turning up the guitar amp every time I use it. It hums like crazy and I kinda worry about exploding on some level....

barevids : Watched a good portion of vid but will admit to skipping to end to see if you managed to fix this monster. And in the last few minutes you were giddy with yourself for having figured out why those Mosfets were getting hot. Question: The fact the those resistors were getting hot causing the Mosfets to heat up, would that be a problem common with all Vibe amps of this model? And therefore a problem that perhaps Vibe should address? I'm not trying to rock the boat here but merely saw what I felt was maybe an obvious problem with this amp once you figured it out. I do not own one of these amps nor any Vibe products so this is not something I am pursuing myself. Just curious, that's all :-) Congrats on figuring it out. That was awesome!

@barevids6 жыл бұрын
Your amp side fets already shorted and as a result burnt the power supply fets. You'll need to replace all the output fets, output drivers, power supply fets and power supply drivers. And possible gate resistors and other things. You can't just change the parts that visibly look burned!

Just like most of your equipment, I (coincedently) also have the same ESR meter/Component tester. The difference is that I modified mine by soldering 30cm leads on the pcb with crocodile clamps on the wire-end side. After recalibration it still works like a charm. However, when I want to measure the ESR of a cap, I don't know if I can trust that thing. After all, it costs 10$ or so. On the other hand, buying a 250$ Peak - Atlas ESR meter is quite expensive, to be honest. What do you think? Do you trust that device?
@barevids5 жыл бұрын
How did you recalibrate?
@Kevin-vq6rv5 жыл бұрын
Short the 3 probes, boot the device. When you read "Selftest mode?" on the display, press & hold test. The device measures the capacitance of the probes. After that it asks to isolate the probes. Then it shows you the resistance of each probe and a message "Selftest OK".

It doesn't matter about that number. It's just the factory batch code. Just make sure those codes are all the same that you put in the same amp.

Can you use a voice coil out of a sub as a static resister to set gains? I tried hooked up to my subs yesterday and man it was loud and freaked me out a little. Also while I was breaking them in I could smell voice coil. From what I could tell I wasn’t clipping when I set the gain so could it just be new sub smell?
@barevids6 жыл бұрын
+Reuben Eldridge at E Tuned Performance there's a couple of things. You can't run new subs at full power till they run in. There's not really a new sub smell. It's just people pushing them too hard too soon. What Subs are they? I suggest backing off your gains for a while. And no, a voice coil on its own will get too hot in seconds.
@TheDailyAmerican6 жыл бұрын
barevids they are the tsw126m from pioneer. Pretty sure it’s the cheapest sub they make. Rated 300 Watts rms and there are 4 of them mounted free air. 1 in the deck and three in a baffle behind the rear seat. The amp is the Skar rp200.1 refurb. Think I have less than 400 dollars in the whole deal. Didn’t want to break anything expensive while I learn. I know have thee gain turned to half of what my scope said was my max so it’s down a lot now.
@failcop6 жыл бұрын
Just check how hot the middle of cone gets. If its cold, but smells then keep blasting, but if its hot and smells then you are in danger. Basically you can runs your subs until smoke starts to blow through your port. (When smoke comes be sure to let sub cool for 1 hour, so that any glue that is still there can harden)
@failcop6 жыл бұрын
Anyway if your subs blow, then get bigger ones
@TheDailyAmerican6 жыл бұрын
No Limits Audio I plan on doing just that. I figure this amp is putting out more than they are rated for even with my voltage drop. Once I’ve learned all I want to learn from them I’ll upgrade the subs to something more appropriate.

Sorry mush, there is no such thing as watts RMS. Interesting video anyroad.
@docpedersen75826 жыл бұрын
Diabolical Artificer Not so. Watts RMS is the only meaningful rating, as opposed to "peak" or instantaneous Watts. Peak Watts was a rating applied by stereo amplifier manufactures back in early days. Was truly meaningless. To differentiate themselves from the junk, high end manufactures all started using RMS (Root Mean Square) ratings, into specific impedance loads.
@diabolicalartificer6 жыл бұрын
Am no expert but I was taught W RMS is non-sense from a technical POV. John explains here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqilhIxjiKqnqck better than I can, see also - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_power ... continuous power and "RMS" power.
@MarkTillotson6 жыл бұрын
watts rms = volts rms x amps rms x power factor. Yes technically its mean watts or mean-IV-product, but its simpler to just say rms, no confusion occurs. But technically voltage is "potential difference" and noone bothers.

who spends over 3k on a car amp?
@hispls6 жыл бұрын
Almost nobody pays full retail. That said, these amps cost 1500$ + shipping from Zenon in Korea so I doubt even "team" price or dealer price will be much under 2200$. Consider EU taxes on imports and you may not see them for under 2600 there.
@VAX19706 жыл бұрын
Not that reliable either judging from this video, I would buy Rockford or Crescendo for that kind of cash
@hispls6 жыл бұрын
Because NOBODY has ever blown up a RF or Crescendo amp, right? In fact the Power T4000 is known to randomly self destruct (otherwise they're great amps) and the Crescendo 12K (or whatever they call the newest big big one) they made recently has been nothing but trouble (notice how EXO was "waiting" for his for so long?) Also implying Crescendo doesn't use Zenon to build their amps anyway. There's a couple more brands that sell this same board amp. I've read one report of one blowing up when it was first powered up, the only other failures I've heard about were 18V and .18 ohm. Guys using amps like this mostly are competing and pushing things to the absolute limit. IMO if you're competing and not blowing up amps you're probably not winning. Do we know how this one in the video broke? High voltage? Low voltage? Low impedance? Shorting speaker leads? Mounted to the box (vibration damage)? This particular Zenon board is as reliable as you can get in a Far East amp this big and they make a lot of power. I think you'll find it is going to be as "reliable" as anything in its class.
