That’s why I loved fault finding as nothing quite replaces that buzz you get when you switch something on after a repair and it works ! It takes a certain type of person to be a technician. It’s addictive lol. The more complicated the repair the bigger the buzz. At nearly 70 I can’t do delicate work anymore due to trembling hands and it’s so annoying, but I still have all the test gear !

@peterhyams6824 Just a thaught....... you could consider teaching a youngster who wants to learn, and he/she could be your hands? Im sure you could still get work if thats your profession, as mentoring someone is as though you continue your work through someone else, and eventually you could hand over your business to that person who would continue to provide help to your community 🙂 ?......

This video brought me back to 1982, I was taking an electronics class at college and we had to design and etch a rather basic circuit board and then build some device. Radio Shack, in the US, had everything I needed. There was a marker like pen that put a resist compound on the board, that created the traces. Any copper that didn’t have the resist marker would be dissolved by the acid.

I have the same childhood experiences, circa 1978 age 11ish. I learned later that the "special" Radio Shack PCB resist pen was just a normal Sharpie marker, marked-up by 500%. That was possibly the most valuable lesson!

A manually routed PCB... Like it is the end of the '70s! The effect of such simple delay line is unbelievable. People from the Far East should make a production run of such ancient chips, as they use the same technology of RAM memory - instead of falsely marking random chips as they were BBDs. I stopped purchasing components from eBay, as the sellers, too often, are either scalpers or fraudsters. Thank you for this video, Anthony

TThe flanger effect is a sweeping comb filter of the input audio. Since the SAD 512 is functionally 1/2 the delay length of the SAD 1024, using it at the same clock frequency will give 1/2 the delay time. This causes a comb filter sweep over a narrower and upper frequency area of the input signal. Use a sweep waveform from 100 Hz to 15KHz to see the comb filter effect of adding the delay to the dry signal. The shorter delay causes the flange effect to work over a higher upper frequency area of the input audio range. With a 1024 step BBD the flanging effect is more noticeable over the lower frequency range of input audio. Sweeping the filter low enough in frequency causes the filters lowest notch to be described as "going through zero(Hz)", or down to 0 Hz. You could reduce the clock frequency to increase the delay time but the lower clock frequency causes aliasing of the audio signal. Nice job of creating the Reticon conversion PCB with an OG method of circuit board etching! I was shocked to see the PCB mechanically supported by the potentiometers, not standoffs from the chassis. AC transformer inputs and outputs too long, not twisted and routed away from signal areas. Twist ties with embedded wire laying against the trace side of the circuit board. Things were done differently back then. But who would've thought that pedals would still be in use?

Is there no end to your talent ! Last video I saw you replaced the writing on a Technics amp as the cleaning foam you used erased it off the brushed metal plate on the front! And now you're designing PCB boards and replacing an IC and using a modern equivalent - somehow making it work! Then to top it off... a bit of guitar at the end! Genius! Wished you were closer, I'd love to come to your workshop just for a visit - and maybe learn from the master!

I’m sure you have no shortage of things to work on but the guitar community are predicting a huge drop off in the number of people capable of repairing tube amplifiers in the next few years. Would you consider making some content tackling common issues associated with guitar tube amps?
