I mean, vids are gonna get dislikes. I get it. And I know its bc of the muskie handling. I do need a new net, and I'll start carrying a mat to put them on. But a lot of muskie "elitists" are going to hate, just bc if you aren't serving your fish wine and cheese and tucking it into bed at night, then you are wrong. People don't understand how different it is 1- from the bank, 2-by yourself. A lot of people don't like the fact that I wade and bank fish for muskie. But I'll keep learning, taking the constructive criticism I get, and leave negative people to themselves! Thank you for watching and I really do appreciate your support!!

@@thesaltygoogan Have one more fish tail. Had caught and released a 54" muskie after being released from the hospitial with broken leg surgery. In a 12 ft prince craft with a 15 Chrysler on the back. I think 1993. Had seen a muskie swallow a muskrat at the same spot the year before. Trolling a big brown bucktail. Caught and released a 16" baby pike. Kept fishing by casting (sitting down as my broken leg was in a cast) The next thing I know a huge Muskie come up straight from the depths and inhales the bucktail. Half hor later I'm releasing a 54" fish. It gets better. $ years later fishing the same spot I had a follow from the biggest fish I had ever seen. Came up right beside the boat. My heart was in my throat. No doubt this was a 50 + class fish, maybe the same one I released years ago. Kept casting but nothing, maybe 20 times. Changed to a 12" Suick jerk bait. Casted another 40 times and all of a sudden the monster came by and missed the lure doing 20 mph as the lure jerked down. The most adrenaline I have ever felt even though I missed it.

what huge fish love is real like swimming baits. In France, wher I live, you can fish for pike with topwater, twitched soft lures, and things like that. But the only way to catch a big pike over 40" is to use a realistic, slow retrieve lure that looks exactly like a roach or trout. Monsters love it. Well done with your crappie lure, you had the fish of a lifetime!
@thesaltygoogan4 жыл бұрын

@thesaltygoogan4 жыл бұрын
@@doughroasterbushcraftandsu3947 The fact I caught this bank 50.5 muskie on the eight was what made me smile. She came in hot on that bait and inhaled it. However what's absent when watching a video is not being there to feel it. She was heavy and pulled drag at least 3 times, which doesn't often happen with heavy gear and stout braid. The MH Legend rod was taxed pretty hard and though I set the hook, you couldn't tell with her weight bowing it so hard. She wasn't happy for sure. Each muskie is different. I've had 36 inchers almost knock me out of a yak, then I've had 40 inchers pull into a net like they were asleep. I think the mild weather that day spiked just enough to get her active, but not super aggressive. Still wanted it enough to chase it round the 8 and eat. For that I'm thankful.
@MattVavrochFishing4 жыл бұрын
@@doughroasterbushcraftandsu3947 I'll have to agree with Cameron on this one, it just depends on the fish and usually the slower they swim away the more they put into the fight doesn't mean they are about to die just need a little R and R before they go out hunting again!

The Musky weight calculators tend to be high. I boated a 53.5" x 24 and the weight calculators say over 38 lbs, but we put her on a digital scale quick before releasing her and she was 37.0 lbs on the button. This fish was probably 40-42 lbs., which is a dandy by any measure. But to get into the 45+ lb class, the fish has to be truly gargantuan. Tough to land large fish by yourself without losing them. Nice job!
@thesaltygoogan4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and thanks for that bit of advice! I still need to figure out some sort of sling scale for when I think I've a record. But I didnt wanna hurt this girl or keep her even in the net too long. I knew she was big, but not if she was a big big muskie as she was my first 50 plus. Probably won't ever weigh one unless it dies or she's obviously a record! It seems like a 2 man job too. How is it in your experience?
@clooperman37454 жыл бұрын
What a superb Musky, here in England we only have the Pike which l have spent nearly 50 years of my life fishing for them in the winter mainly with lures. I have noticed in most of the Musky videos l have watched that even the big fish like this one are landed very quickly, do you use very powerful rods? Again well done on a cracking Musky.
@thesaltygoogan4 жыл бұрын
I would love to get into some big European pike! I've seen some monsters in pictures. We usually do use higher speed reels and strong tackle. The fish are pretty fragile, and if not landed and released relatively quickly, they tend to die. Although I catch them on bass gear all the time, and the bass tackle handles them, its just not as quick a process. I really appreciate you watching! Thank you brother

Does he still make that bait? The link doesn't work
@thesaltygoogan2 жыл бұрын
I checked and it appears due to personal reasons he had to hold off on making more. Are you on IG or facebook?

what are your baitcasting reels for pike/muskie?
@thesaltygoogan4 жыл бұрын
I use shimano tranx 300 and 400. I'll use varying speed reels depending on bait choice. Higher speed I'll use on baits like big rubber baits and stuff like that. Tranx 300hg I'll use for basically anything that doesn't pull hard. For hard pulling baits like big blades I'll go to the 400 regular. I think it's the 400a. I put my 300 sized reels on medium heavy rods and the 400 on heavy. I hope this helps and made sense!

Well done, I fished that same area about a month ago. Curious why you weren’t in the yak? Worked out great for you the way it was.

I was just super pressed for time that day. I only really had about 45 minutes to drive, get down there and actually fish before i left

Are you sure that wasn't at least a 60 incher & 60 pounder? You better bring a bigger net next time. Awesome catch & release. Another nice fish story. LOL

Thank you! lol. I actually bought a big ol ranger net not too long ago. Nice rubber one. As soon as this shoulder stops bothering me I hope to get it slimed!
