I’m from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and hearing about things like this in my own state is always crazy to me. I never usually associate big tornadoes with Iowa, usually Oklahoma or Nebraska or even Kansas.
@FreddyMcKinney2 жыл бұрын
Iowa actually has a long history of destructive tornadoes it just doesn’t get the same recognition as other states get.
@Exentity2 жыл бұрын
@@FreddyMcKinney it’s certainly not as common, or at least cover the whole state lol. I know back in like the 60s an EF2 hit Cedar Rapids, but the worst weather event we’ve had was the August 10th, 2020 derecho. All 133,000 residents without power, some without power for well over a month and a half. Easily over $1 billion in damage alone to Cedar Rapids, worst hit city

I'm also a native Iowa resident, and Iowa is well established as being a hot spot for violent tornadoes. From 1950 to 2022, Iowa was ranked third for number of EF-4 and EF-5 tornadoes (Source: NWS) behind Oklahoma (first) and Texas. (second) We're home to the Parkersburg EF-5, and four other F5 rated tornadoes. Depending on how you manipulate data, you could even argue Iowa is actually the top state for violent tornadoes per square mile.

I've never chased storms, but this video shows how frustrating I could imagine it being. So easy to miss a good tornado, or be too far away for a good view and unable to catch up. I'm sure there would be many frustrating days, but also awesome days as well.

This video is well put together. I felt compelled to help those in Winterset. While other communities were effected, Winterset had 6 deaths. Of those one family he lost his wife. Son in law. 2 grandchildren, his home and vehicle all in few minutes. I was st first in cleanup of carver road, then few houses off carver, the ems director sent me with other volunteers to the man lost nearly all in a minute. After the homeowner meet me he became fond of me. So each day was sent to his property to clean up. One had to feel for the man. His brother and those in Winterset. My 3 weeks of helping the shifts were to be 3 hours each I made. Sure could stay early light to near dark. People came from all over. Minnesota. North Carolina, Kentucky. Texas One man saw the story on the world news flew in on his private jet from Las Vegas. Cities wrote checks, the husky basketball team went to state the opponent win or lose gave gift cards , hat hat or plate passed around for the crowd to give. Like I gave my time away from my company so did many others help those effected by storms they are victims it could be you next or one you know. A news storm spotter after talking to me about my strong interest in tornados told me need to be storm spotter could help save a community and lives. I have from his suggestion combined an idea, after working with Christian based handyman company to say. I will set aside money into an special fund to launch my Idea .

We got caught in the middle of this tornado as it passed army post road on southeast side of Des Moines. Me and my son in my car. We held hands and prayed as debris and trees blew passed our car. Ears were popping and my car shook. Less then a mile from my house. It did damage to my home and took out our shed. Luckily we survived. It was an EF2 when we got stuck in it. Very little warning before it hit. So sad for the people who lost family members in Winterset. We had angels watching over us that day 😇

I was with my grandkids at a Hotel in Des Moines. We were by the state fairgrounds because he had just finished competing at the NASP state tournaments. I saw a tornado warning alert on my phone. I thought it was a mistake i.e. it's MARCH 5th. My grandson had the same message. Went downstairs-front desk staff had no idea what to do, especially when another guest and I figured out we were in the line of fire. The staff were like Norwalk? That's about 10 minutes south of us. That was the 2nd one that was reported. Daughter/SIL got back and was equally surprised/shocked at ignorance about the staff not knowing what to do. I learned later that at least 1 of them was an ef4. I saw the footage recently of the LA tornado that was on Inside Edition. Someone ignorantly drove right into the path of it not knowing what it was. I guess my point is they are now in atypical places and times of the year and we need to know what to do.

I was on the farthest southeast tornado warned storm almost below Baxter. That is the storm that went thru Winterset. I gave up trying to keep up.
