Monster is an amazing manga and anime series. Today we're looking at the ending, primarily through the lens of Ambiguity. Why is it ambiguous and what are the two big questions that this ending leaves?
We're going to talk a little bit about Johan Leibert's character too. Did his plans actually work out or, at the end of the day, is it all just a matter of perspective?

10:01 Rather than the mother's decision betraying Johan's sense of love, I'd always interpreted it to be the final straw in destroying his sense of self. Johan had already been disguising himself as Anna while living at the Three Frogs, and he was never given a name to distinguish himself as an individual, not interchangable with his sister. So when his mother changes her decision at the last moment, the question he asks Tenma isn't "Why did she make that choice?", but rather "Did she try to save me? Or did she mistake me for my sister? Which one of us was the unwanted child?" Johan no longer knows if there's any difference between the two of them. If the mother had just made a choice and stuck to it, perhaps he could've convinced himself that there *is* some sort of distinction between himself and his twin. Furthermore, when Nina returns from the Red Rose Mansion, Johan quotes a line from the "God of Peace", saying that "I am you, and you are me". At this point, his sense of distinction between himself and his sister had already started to crumble. I believe it was this blurring of identities that predisposed Johan io adpot Anna's story as his own, way before the brainwashing of 511 Kinderheim had muddled his memories. "The real monster" wasn't the fact that mother had made a decision, but rather her change of heart halfway through, which had clouded what was left of Johan's sense of self... Without an identity, he quickly plunged into the depths of nihilism. One more thing I'd noticed about the mother's decision: if you carefully examine what each of the twins say, Johan pleads "Please don't let go", but Anna says "Please don't let go of my hand". The mother grants both of their requests. Even as she thrusts Anna forward, she doesn't let go of her hand. It's something I never see anyone else mention, especially when accusing the mother for allegedly choosing between her children.

Most beautifully put. Just finished watching the show. Would love to add one thing to it. I think the same lack of identity was taking shape in Anna as well. But that one strain of memory that was exclusively hers, and she never mentioned to the brother, where Bonaparta tells her to run away and they don't deserve to become monsters. That sets the course of their life in different directions. P.S Something just popped in my head today, that I missed while watching, and unfortunately so, as it was a very easy reference. The memory has to play a big part in this story. Memory, collective and individual, a tool in the hand of the states behind the iron curtain to mould the society and future to fit their megalomaniac visions. Id refer to the fabled line of Kundera, who also happens to be a Czeck. "The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting."

I do think he was traumatized by the simple fact that his mother would give away her child, and specifically choosing between her children, which one to give away. Remember Johan's speech to Milosh in Prague. "Will your mother recognize you? And even if she will, what if she won't want you? Why were you abandoned in the first place? What will you do then? Why do you exist? Who wanted you into this world?" That was Johan projecting his trauma of parental abandonment on Milosh, and the whole rest of the world. That is why Tenma is so important to him. Because Tenma chose Johan, chose to save Johan's life, chose to see him as something valuable. Twice, too! First, when Johan was a stranger, then again, when Tenma already knew Johan and knew how horrible things he had done. Tenma is the life giving, value giving father Johan needs.

Notice how Johan's bed is all messed up? Once, Lunge said that only a demon could leave a room without leaving evidences of his existence. Different from that episode, when Johan left clean from evidences room, this time there was some, like que messy bed and open window, thus proving that Johan isn't a demon anymore. He is finally human Like Grimmer said, maybe he turned human in the last episode

I like to think that Johan left to see his mother and live a normal life in the end. Even grimmer says, "I think I must have figured out how the show ended. The Magnificent Steiner, he probably, became human again." I think this can be applied to Johan. I assume that just like in the beginning, Johan heard Tenma when he was unconscious. Johan heard Tenma say that his mother loved him and that he had a name, which solidified his existence. Thus, he left the hospital and the monster became human again.

I still think the most important aspect of Johan's character gets left out of the discussion so often, yet I think it's actually fairly clear: his motivation is to prove people like Tenma wrong. The perfect suicide isn't perfect because it ties up all the threads that could possibly lead to him and allow him to phase out of existence, it's perfect because Tenma will have no choice but to abandon his morals, proving Johan's idea that humanity isn't worth saving. Wim's father shooting Johan somewhat delays this, but Tenma chooses to operate despite fully knowing what Johan had done. And the way I see it, that isn't left up to interpretation; a story that had been fairly philosophically neutral, presenting many different worldviews, uses its ending to fully endorse the philosophy on Tenma. The idea that people are worthy of life and everyone is created equal is the very thing that Johan wants to prove wrong, but he ultimately fails to do so when Tenma willingly saves his life. With his motivation gone and his true name returned to him, Johan really doesn't exist anymore. He's a real person and he's still alive, but his entire identity as the serial killer Johan Liebert has dissolved, which is why the bed is empty. If you miss the fact that proving Tenma wrong is his entire goal (which I think is almost objectively his motive for all the crimes since the first operation), you can't properly interpret the events at Ruhenheim since forcing Tenma to kill him willingly has been his goal from the start. The video you mentioned is okay, but it misses this point as well and thus tries to interpret the combination of events leading to Wim's father shooting Johan as well as the operation saving his life as fate simply catching up with him one too many times, which massively undersells how good the ending really is.

I have a different take on the ending personally. Well, on the entire show anyway. I think this show is about hope. But not the happy-go lucky kind. It’s the kind of hope that is... painful. Like, you know you shouldn’t hope because the situation is so dire... but there’s a small part of you that can’t help but hope against it all. Johan wasn’t completely devoid of hope for a better life. He was convinced that he was. It’s why he went around orchestrating all of these events and committing the murders. It’s why he adopted his philosophies. But at the end of it all... he wanted to be loved. He wanted to be forgiven. He wanted a home and people that cared about him. But he was so sure it wasn’t an option for him. Because he was a monster. So then... why the change of heart at the very end? Personally, I believe that when Johan’s bed is empty, it’s a sign that even a monster like him, who was committed atrocity after atrocity... still found some kind of happy ending. It might not be with his sister or Tenma, perhaps not with anyone... but it’s a new kind of life. One that is different. One that is his. I picture Johan leaving that bed intending to go out and live a peaceful life. I believe that if Johan was really completely devoid of hope, the change would never have occurred at all. He would still be a monster. And this is all just in relation to Johan. That’s not even looking at all the other characters in the show. This is what I love about Monster. There are no hard answers, and you can make just about any conclusion that you want from it. But for me, I see this as an exercise in hope. That small, fragile, painful type of hope that is, inevitably, a part of all of us.

I came to a conclusion after analyzing some things. Even tho we saw a lot of scenes of Johan through the anime we don't know anything about him. Even his past, (the red rose mansion, the experiment, the children stories) is presented by Nina's perspective or their mother. Basically, what I'm saying is that, we don't know how Johan feels, we don't truly know anything about what he is thinking and how did the past affect him directly. ( maybe the scene when he was crying on the rooftop for Karl, but even there we don't know why he was exactly crying) We don't know his own perspective about the experiences because he doesn't talk about it. (The only thing we get to see from his own mind is the peak, the end, what did the end represent for him) Even the scene in the final episodes where he saw the drawings at the "vampire's house" aren't seen by his point of view, they are seen through Nina's eyes. Johan is an enigma. That's why the end is left in suspense about Johan (we see scenes of the other characters living their happy lives), but even in the end we still don't know what truly happened to him, or at least the answer to his question and who is the true monster? I want to believe that we have a monster inside us and the monster shows less or more based on our own experience and past traumas. Tenma has a monster inside him (we see how he becomes darker and darker with each ep bc his goal is consuming him), Nina also has a monster (her past is eating her from inside out), Franz Bonaparta (a monster who did experiments on children, later he realizes that what he did was wrong and wants to atone for his sins), Grimmer, Roberto, Eva... everyone has their own monster inside. For me the end represented the act of supreme self-sacrifice and love: forgiving. It's hard to forgive someone for what they did, it's hard to believe that people can change. But yeah, everyone can change, even the most cruel being can change into good in the right environment with the right amount of love.

These are just some thoughts of the ending I had to type out. A mother obviously knows her children. I think she was initially drawn to give away the boy who is generally seen as stronger, but then changed her mind to Anna/Nina. This because Anna would accept it faster than Johan would. This is proven because we can see Nina being settled in her life in the last episode, but with Johan (through Tenma's mind) it's shown that because he lived his whole life thinking he was the one that wasn't wanted, he now still lives in doubt if his mother confused the two and that he was actually the unwanted. Another thing that makes me think Nina was the stronger one, was that Johan was dressed as Nina and not the other way around. He was hiding behind her. This is probably also the beginning of his complex where he thinks he's Nina. In his mind he was the one who told Nina everything that happened in that dark room so that also explains the storybook 'the monster that didn't have a name' where Johan ate Nina and basically forced her to have a name. He forced her to remember everything again. My interpretation of why Johan was looking so peaceful in his coma is that his presence will always be acknowledged. In contrast to before where Tenma had to search for Johan he could now find him. This makes me think about how Grimmer wanted Bonaparta to stay alive so he can prove what happened to him and Kinderheim 511 all together (and feel remorse and repercussion). And now Johan is technically playing that role for Tenma. The only one I still don't really fully understand is Nina. She was spacing out so much and I felt that the show exaggerated it so much that I can't really comprehend where they were going with it. Maybe she was there to show that even though two people go through the same thing the outcome is differently. And at the same time she could be there to show her reactions which should be similarly to Johan's as they're mind is somewhat unified. Lastly what I also like about the series is that everyone got manipulated by Johan, like how even Bonaparta admitted that in his letter. But in the end he couldn't get Tenma. Even though Tenma had chased him for so much years he still believed in life and chose to save Johan. This was entirely opposite of Johan who thought he was going to kill him. And it ties in very well with Nina who chose to forgive Johan. If Tenma had shot that bullet Johan's philosophy would've been confirmed and his suicide would've definitely been the perfect ending.

I’ve always wondered whether Nina was the monster or not. It’s confusing to me how she would suddenly space out and turn into a different version of herself, like when she suddenly strangled the doctor or asked where her mother is. She had the eyes as monster Johan. And as we know Johan was just trying to copy Nina all along, it makes me wonder whether he tried to copy the monster inside her too. She is the only character that’s left completely unexplained in this show

New reader here, finished till the ending. I saw one comment taking about this. About how the ending with the empty bed literally representing Johan is no longer there because he was given his true name. Now his “true name” is never revealed but it’s also irrelevant because it’s about how “Johan” the monster and the name disappeared ever since he was given his “true name”. About how his identity between Anna or “Nina” differ from “johan” and his “true name” kinda like they were split apart and are given their sort of “true identity” as id call it. I’d like to think positively about the empty bed and that the empty bed is like the representation of the death of “Johan” because the aftermath of the empty bed and tenma leaving doesn’t matter as I think the empty bed in the end was meant to represent “the monster is now gone” rather than “the monster changed and became a better person”.

Literally ended reading Monster like 5 hours before this video was uploaded and right now I'm watching all those explanation videos to really grasp the ending. Both this + your timeline video and "Explaining The Ending of Monster" are so helpful. It's a long journey, with so many characters that turned out to be a part of bigger picture, that I'm surprised I didn't catch all of that. I was kinda unsatisfied with the ending, as I was expecting something... explosive and groundbreaking, but the dialog between Johan and Tenma was yet another moment of me being shocked and saying "oh my god" by the end of a chapter. Monster is a great story, and I thought so even knowing that I missed or didn't connect together many motives, can't wait to watch the anime version someday while having all the current knowledge and trying to see the important scenes in a different light. Thank you.

Perfect timing! I'm glad the videos were helpful. I think this series is really amazing but it's easy to lose pieces of the story by the time you get to the end. If you've got the time, I'd recommend going through Another Monster before watching the anime. It adds a lot of context to the wider Monster story and is just generally a good read. Also if you haven't dived into any other Urasawa stories, I'd be happy to recommend some of those too!

When You witness a piece of art, as the story proceeds, you are coming with your own interpretations and theories. According to you, your interpretation is the best and when you don't see your interpretation becoming reality, you get disappointed. I think Urasawa wanted to prevent this. Its as if he thought, "My story could be everything and yet be nothing" He has left extremely minuscule subtle details as he proceeds telling the story. They are so minuscule that they are like a tangled knot, the more u try to get inside, the more tangled it becomes. Yes Monster is complicated to that level. There are layers in the story and its characters. While at the same time he is leaving room for interpretations. It could be everything and yet be nothing. And he did this job with utter perfection. You dont necessarily see a lose end as they are so minuscule. I think this is the reason why there are so many questions left unanswered. And this is literally just one reason which i mentioned. We can pretty much write like 10 pages explaining in depth analysis of Monster. Its indeed a masterpiece and for me its the best animanga.

Theory about the ending: Tenma had a vision of what Johans is going to do after what he told him, so before going out the door of his room he stands still in front of it for some time.When the open window and empty bed with the blanket folded like somebody got out of it was shown,it could imply,he wants to find out the truth,his last missing piece to his trauma which turned him into a monster (beside the others,but this one was kinda the start and most influential) ,wants/needs an answer to the question which child his mother didn’t want,why she made the choice she did. If she tried to „save him“ or really loved him like Tenma told him, it doesn’t „justify“/explain the Monster in him and all his doings in the past anymore. This could lead to him killing himself because of the mental state these thoughts might put him in but as well having a positive answer could heal his deepest wound.

It's all symbolic: it's a tale. Johann symbolizes pure evil and is the product of the greatest sin: to choose one life over another, denying that all lives are worth the same (Monster's "motto"). But not only Johann's mother is guilty of that: it is the sin of Tenma too. Tenma actively choose to save Johann and not the mayor, effectively denying what he claims to be doing (treating all lives equally). If all lives are equally worthy, then why did he decide, in the last moment, to operate Johann and let the mayor die? Because he decided, evil (i.e. Johnn) appeared in his life. In the final chapters Tenma saves Johann again, but then he didn't choose. He just did his work. Doctors save lives: the lives of those in front of them. They don't choose. And because Tenma didn't choose the origin of evil is revealed to him (Johann tells his story) and then evil disappears.

Interesting, I just finished the series and I honestly feel like he escaped but he just became a wanderer. I believe his escape is similar to his escape earlier in the series but once he found a name, he was unsure as to what to do next. He finally found his name but at the end of the day he is all alone kinda similar to the children’s book. (I also think he suffers from maternal abandonment as well).

I always thought johan had split personality disorder: Johan, and the Monster The God of Peace story says that the God was too busy helping people that he couldn't even look at a mirror but once he did, he saw a Monster who told the God to point the gun at his forehead and shoot him. So when Johan tells Anna to shoot him in the beginning of the show, it was the Monster trying to kill Johan so he would be "Johan". And once he was shot again, that's when the Monster died aswell which means that the last scene is basically the death of Johan forever. It was only after he died that he found out his name but there was no one to call him by it.

I just finished rewatching the series and I can't help but compose my thoughts on it. I'm not good with words but here's my take on the ending. Before writing about my thoughts on what happened in the ending, I'd like to talk a little bit about Johan first. I'm with the people who thinks that, just like every single one of us, Johan has a monster inside of him even before he was taken to 511 Kinderheim. I'm still unsure why he was dressed up as a girl when they were still with their mother but some people theorized that their mother did that so they can hide easily from the people who were pursuing them since those people know that they were pursuing twins, with one being a girl and one, a boy. With that theory, I think it would make sense why Johan was dressed up as a girl and exactly like Anna(Nina). If we use that theory as a foundation, it would make sense why Hartmann said that Johan was already a monster even before he entered 511 Kinderheim. Growing up thinking that he doesn't have a true name made him lose his sense of self, and the fact that he was dressed up as a girl by his own mother made him doubt if there was actually a difference between him and his sister. Even though it's suggested to be only a "hallucination", this can still be supported by the question he asks Tenma at the last episode, "Did she try to save me? Or did she mistake me for my sister? Which one of us was the unwanted child?" This question supports the idea that because of his experience with his mother, his sense of distinction between him and Anna crumbled. The line that separates Johan and Anna's identity became blurry in Johan's mind hence why it was also very easy for him to adopt Anna's story like it was his own experience because his life as a child ingrained in his mind that he and Anna are one and the same. This can also be the reason why he quotes the line from one of Franz's books, "God of Peace", which states that, "I am you, and you are me." The experiments in 511 Kinderheim made Johan lose his connection with his mother and even Anna. The memories and experiences in the mansion were slowly internalized in him through Anna's stories. He also witnessed how killing and scheming seems to be normal in human nature because of the environment he was in at that time. Considering that he already has a monster inside of him because of his experience with his mother and at the Red Rose Mansion, I like to think that Franz's experiments only stripped away the remaining humanity inside Johan which left only the monster to live inside of him. The "real monster" that the last episode was suggesting, I like to think that it wasn't Johan, nor Tenma. It isn't any of the characters shown in the series. Throughout the entirety of the show, we've only ever seen Johan's experiences or memories through other people, usually Anna, but never from Johan himself. This makes me think that we never knew what Johan actually feels and what he actually thinks about his experiences. We never got a glimpse of his experience through his own eyes, his own memories, and his own perspective. We only ever had a look through Johan's eyes and a glimpse of his perspective at the last episode with Tenma's "hallucination" which makes me think that that information was the last key that we needed in order to know who was actually the "real monster" as the title of the last episode suggests. With that glimpse of the past through Johan's perspective, a lot of people concluded that the real monster nust be their mother, or even just the action of choosing between her children. In my opinion, however, the real monster was actually not the act of choosing itself, but rather the hint of hesitation the mother showed while choosing between her children. This act of hesitation convinced Johan that there is actually no distinction between him and his sister because in his perspective, even their mother couldn't figure out who was who at that time. This memory clouded what was left of Johan's sense of self, and without any identity, this caused him to spiral and immediately succumb to nihilism. With that, let's move on with my thoughts on what happened at the end of the series. I have two theories which are actually the same with only minor differences. First we have to talk about what is a "perfect suicide". The "perfect suicide" that Johan wants to achieve is turning himself into an imaginary person from a real person. Just like what Inspector Lunge said at the hotel, to turn a real person into an imaginary one, they must "eliminate all those who know that person and all those who know of that person's past." In that sense, I think that Johan is trying to kill every person that is actually involved in his past and the people who were actually a part of his past. By completely eliminating this people, only can he achieve a "perfect suicide". Living a life where no one knows who you actually are and what your past actually is, completely erasing the existence of a young man named "Johan". I based my theories on whether Johan actually heard Tenma's confession about him finding their mother, being able to talk with her, and knowing his true name, or not. If he didn't hear it and he was actually in a coma: I think that the ending suggests that he continues to live his life, thinking that he was able to conduct a "perfect suicide" by killing the last person who was knows him and was actually involved in his past which is Franz, never knowing that his mother is actually alive and that he actually has a true name. However, if he did hear Tenma's confession: I think that he left the hospital and is on his journey to search for his mother in order to kill her so that he can achieve the true "perfect suicide". After killing his mother, Johan's life would end exactly the same as the ending of the book, "Obluda" by Klaus Poppe, which was heavily emphasized thoughout the whole series, "Even though he had finally found a name, there was no one left to call him by it." He now knows his true name because of Tenma but he doesn't have anyone left to call him by it nor does he have anyone left who knows his past and actually took part in it. The second theory makes more sense to me because it answers the question as to why the book was given so much emphasis throughout the series. Johan being able to continue to live his life can also be supported by another quote in the series which was said by Grimmer, "I think I must have figured out how the show ended. The Magnificent Steiner, he probably, became human again." Another thing is that, I don't think that Johan jumped and actually committed suicide. Knowing Johan's personality, I don't think that he would jump and kill himself because it was suggested in his first encounter with Tenma as the "monster" that he believes that he was one of the "chosen ones" because he was given another chance in life after Tenma saved him, just like the games that the kids play on the roof. So no, I don't think he would kill himself just like that. I also don't think that Tenma wasn't able to save Johan, nor do I think that Tenma purposefully failed the surgery to kill Johan. Throughout the entire series, we have witnessed Tenma's ability as a doctor and we know that Tenma is a genius surgeon, and also the fact that Tenma is always determined to treat everyone who is injured in the series who he knows can still be saved, may it be an innocent civilian or a criminal proves that he can and he will save Johan. Other people may disagree with this theories and say that there are a lot of people who knows Johan and his past so it wouldn't be a "perfect suicide" right? No, I think it is, in the sense that he became an imaginary person. No records of the experiment, no photos except Franz's drawings, stories about him from different people like Dr. Gillen, Tenma, and etc., but all of this can easily fall under the category of just an idea or a product of one's imagination when stated during an interrogation just like how Inspector Lunge didn't believe Tenma at first, and how he concluded that Johan was only an imaginary person inside Tenma's head. In that sense, I really think that Johan targeting only the people that took part in his past can give him the "perfect suicide" makes so much sense. If he did that, there will be no actual memories of the experiment in the Red Rose Mansion, nor the experiments in the 511 Kinderheim because all of the people involved who can be a valuable witness are dead. There will be nothing left but pure fiction and imagination of a human mind in the form of Tenma, Dr. Gillen, and other characters who knew Johan by investigating him because they don't have any experience nor did they participate in the said experiments. No one with an actual evidence nor involvement that a monster in the form of young blonde man named "Johan Liebert", actually existed. Doing this turns a real person into an imaginary one hence a true "perfect suicide". (P.S. I apologize if it's too long hahaha I couldn't help but write my thoughts down because Monster is such a good story. Other theories I've read also say that the "real monster" was actually the belief that one's life is more valuable than the other that's why Johan said that he saw a monster on the day that Franz forced their mother to choose between her children and which child's life she valued more. Hence why he also made Tenmas choose between him and Wim the last few episodes of the series be ause he wanted to prove that everyone is a monster, not just him. But Tenma chose to treat Johan despite knowing what he has done and what he was capable of which proved that Johan's belief wasn't true. Tenma was not a monster and he stuck to what he believes that all lives are equal.)

I think “The Real Monster” was the cycle of hatred and violence which Johan seeks to perpetuate and Tenma actively breaks. Tenma sees no lives as lesser or greater, all equally worthy. Johan sees them as equally unworthy, except for a select few (namely his sister). So the very first time he encounters the “Monster,” when he’s first confronted with the idea that someone is “lesser” than another. And as someone else noted, it was the first time Johan began to question his sense of self and individuality

When he got shot in the head by Wim's father, Tenma saves him. According to Johan's own belief, he gets to see life in a new light because fate allowed him to. His belief in fate is seen on the rooftop game wherein if you fall and live then that meant fate decided to give you another chance to live. His "perfect suicide" did not work, he lived. Fate gives him a chance to see life in a new light. Btw, I'm still waiting for Another Monster vid that I really hope you'll make soon ;)

The ending, imho, is symbolic, esp when compared with the manga. There are some things with Monster that can only be understood when you have actually experienced things, as an adult, from people who have hurt you--loss and betrayal, abuse, mental health, as well as the inner workings of society and the nuances of relationships are all present within Monster. When you have had personal experiences with terrible people, you more fully grasp the kind of person Tenma is, and the wrestling of the emotions, as well as the guilt he feels towards himself, social pressures, and his own drive to "fix" what was broken. To have the love of your live forsake you, to be hunted down when you are seeking to do the right thing, but you still can't manage to do it because it goes against your nature, or what you stand for--birth, life, loss, having a family and protecting them, meaning, and death, are all wrapped up. It's about the unfairness of life, and choosing to respond to that unfairness. The nature of choices, and dealing with trauma and psychopathy, and just how hard these things are to deal with. Nina's choices vs Johan's and how children need guidance, too, all of this is wrapped into one big story. In the end, Tenma didn't "have" to make a choice because Johan's actions caught up with him. There is inevitably in that statement, and Tenma plays that role of mercy by saving him the second time, despite knowing everything. I also think this is symbolic of Tenma putting HIMSELF right, because he based his career and motivations on saving Johan's life, so by doing it again, he was moving past this, and showing to himself that this arc, and path, and meaning of his own life were always far beyond Johan's. It is this realization that he was always good, which is something that Tenma clearly struggled with--his own sense of self despite his actions--til he overcomes and finalizes it by still standing for what he feels is right in his soul. When you look at is a whole, regardless of where you think Johan should be, it's maybe an end to Tenma's suffering, and a chance to move on. I think people do want justice, and justice is natural. But we don't always get it. So sometimes that internal peace is all we need to seek. When you understand those things as a person, you see the ending for what it is, I think.

Literally the ending has only two possible answers, 1 he committed suicide, or 2 he kept on killing which I doubt. At the end of the book, the monster finally had a name but had no one to call him by, and at the end of the show he wanted to die, so johan’s final moments are depressing and he commits suicide, the end

If the entire series was set up as a mystery, why didn't we get to solve the mystery? Why and how did Johan end up as a monster? At the end, it's revealed he wasn't the one at the mansion, and he was already a monster when he got to kinderheim.
@SeaGee
@SeaGee 3 жыл бұрын
I think the monster ultimately emerged from Bonapartas experiments. Removing Johan's connection to his mother, internalising the memories of the mansion, learning that killing, plotting, scheming was all perfectly normal. Kinderheim was stripping away his humanity leaving only the monster left. Again, I think that Johan's journey is one you're supposed to come to your own conclusions on. Like how much should it take to turn a human into a monster, is it really so easy? Urasawa does this in other series too, Here's all the information you get now piece it together how you will (E.g. Billy Bat in Billy Bat). Have some lingering questions that the series won't provide concrete answers to

To my understanding there's Japanese and Spanish versions you can get off Amazon. There's an unofficial english fan translation floating about too. I found a copy up on Archive org. There's also an email of the translator on the wiki which I've heard some people have got a copy from directly. Hopefully that helps

I finished the Anime a few minutes ago. I came here to see and read how other people view the ending. I hate endings in general imo every anime should continue till the day we all die, but open endings are the fuzcking worst. I always get caught in my thoughts and start overthinking. I always saw the memes of Johan being an absolute Monster and Antagonist, but to be honest I fully support him. Our Boy only wanted to be with his sister and mother. Blame Franz Bonaparte, he is the real Monster. The worst thing is that back in the days, there were such crazy experiments, and they did far more worse things, but we will never know.

Regarding the perfect suicide it makes sense to me. Bonapart was the only one left (other than the mother) who knew about Johan's true origin. The characters you brought up only has speculation and the facts they do have doesn't tell em anything concrete of how Johan was made. Now on the side I see Johan as an evil mastermind so the perfect suicide outcome would be an ending he would have taken if he was allowed to do so, then he'd have gone on to meet his mother to kill her (probably). I also find it funny that Bonapart, the monster that made Johan was killed by Johan's hands nor was Johan shot by Tenma, the person who gave life again to said monster.

Does all life are equal? All life is valuable and deserves to be treated with respect and kindness, but it's important to recognize that different forms of life have different needs and experiences. For example, a human life may be considered more valuable than the life of an insect in certain contexts, but this doesn't mean that the life of an insect is not important. If someone is criminal ? If someone has committed a crime, it's important that they take responsibility for their actions and face the consequences of their behavior. However, it's also important to recognize that people who have committed crimes are still human beings who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. The criminal justice system is designed to help people learn from their mistakes and become better members of society, rather than simply punishing them for their behavior.

I think the "perfect suicide" idea just ends up as a red herring. I.e. Johan isn't doing that, Nina just thinks that he is. Thus why all those people are left alive. Nina just thinks she figured out what Johan's doing but she's wrong Johan went to Ruhenheim just to die. He stages this big exit for himself to show Tenma just how awful he is. Ruhenheim is a reflection of where Johan came from and what will happen if he's left alive. All pushing Tenma into killing him. There's also this idea of Johan "testing" Tenma. To challenge if Tenma really feels like Johan should be killed. I know there's some fans that believe quite strongly in that but I'm honestly not too sure. Hopefully that helps!

I think it’s as simple as, yohan is alive and has escaped back into the world through the window. Tenma went through all these things only to start from the beginning, whether or not to save his life. He does and Yohan is back out into the world. What made me come to this conclusion? The bed sheet.

There really isn't anything concrete said on where the mother went. The only things we know for sure are: she was being manipulated by Bonaparta to forget who she was, which might have extended to forgetting her kids; At some point she heads to France to work as a geneticist (where she is at the end of the series). That's really all we get. One of those Monster things we'll never get the full picture of.

The final chapter shows one of the kids being sent to the red rose Mansion. It's not clear which one goes but it's implied through the series that Nina really was the one who went. So I guess to answer your question, Nina's is true. You could make a case that Johan was the one who went to the Red Rose Mansion but I think the "canon" answer is Nina went.

What's confusing to me is Johan was kept by his mom and Nina was the one given away. Once realizing that his mom picked him instead of Nina shouldn't he feel loved and not unwated? On top of that Nina was the one that actually experienced the trauma and the one force into experimentation by Bonaparte. It would seem Johan was the one with the better life before the event in the orphanage. I don't see how that would cause him to turn into a monster.
