Monster from a Prehistoric Planet

Mr. Funazu wants to turn a tropical island called Obelisk island into a resort. Therefore, he leads an expedition from Tokyo to start develop the plan. Despite of the warnings of the native boy Saki two members of the expedition go into a forbidden area where they find a giant egg. The "bird-lizard", also referred to a "Gappa" is taken away by the scientists to a zoo in Japan. But the two parents of Gappa rise and destroy everything in their way in order to look for their baby -- even so far as Japan. Mr. Funazu is finally convinced to let go of the baby and return him to his parents to save Japan. But is this too late?

I got this movie when I was very young for Easter well over 30 years ago.. lost it like 15 years back an was never able to find it!!.. such a good monster movie, I'm so glad I finally found it!

This movie was released in theaters in Japan in 1967 as "Daikyoju Gappa" or "Giant Beast Gappa." When it came to the U.S. it was as a TV movie, which is where it belongs. Wikipedia calls this movie: "Gappa: The Triphibian Monster" ("triphibian" means it fights on land, sea, and air). The plot of this movie was lifted almost intact from the British film "Gorgo" (1961), a case of blatant plagiarism. For more info see the Wikipedia article. The fact that the boy is named "Saki" may well explain the fuzzy brains behind this atrocity.

Uhm, could someone PLEASE explain to me why every time there is a 100' monster coming your way there are STILL people running away from it, literally right under its feet, when, presumably, you would have seen it coming from miles away? Whether it's these two overgrown parrots, a "Big Ass Spider", "Godzilla", any giant monster, why do these people wait until it is literally about to step on them to run away? I guess it's like people who wait until the last minute to evacuate when a hurricane is approaching?? LOL, this was a great campy-cheesy movie that beat Jurassic Park to the extremely profitable idea of creating a theme park with mighty man-eating, mayhem causing, mutant monsters. I mean, WHAT could POSSIBLY go wrong?? Loved it, LOL. @CiNENET, it is what made me a subscriber.

Brought back good memories, but as an adult now, I can see the sterotypical protrayal of Island natives -- how they were played back then. Even in Godizilla movies, like others, natives were made to look like black/darkerskinned people with low intelligence, superstitious, and broken speech. Take a look at King Kong versus Godziila, Mothra, Godzilla vs the Sea Monster (Ebirha) and so on... NOt much has really changed since then.
