Monster Hunter: Basic Gunlance Usage Guide

Made this video a while back, figured I might as well make it public in case anyone gets anything from it.
I didn't add much about shelling, so here goes: Shelling sucks. It has fixed damage which is mediocre and sucks up sharpness, and the best use is to chain combos. Normal always has 5 shells per clip and laughable damage, Long is always 3 shells and low damage, and Spread is 2 shells and decent damage. Spread 1 does the same damage as Normal 5, to put it in context. Shelling does a fixed Fire damage amount too, so anything weak to Fire is obviously slightly better to shell on. See the Melee Damage FAQ for a more detailed breakdown.
Wyvern Fire does the same damage as four shells from your gunlance. So, Spread 3-5 WF is OK to use if you have a big opening, but otherwise it's not worth using past High rank.

It's the Dragon Gunlance Emblem (I think that's the name) and it's made from tickets you get fighting the Famitsu Daora. It's a DLC quest for 2G, so if you have Unite you'll either need to use CWCheat to get it, or play online with a 2G player over AHP and get them to host the quest.

I got Monster Hunter Freedom Unite! for my PSP for like £3 a couple weeks ago. You've made this tutorial excellently man, too many people only show what you need to do to be effective, but very few realize it's also a matter of what NOT to do. Robert Jones is right, you make valuable contributions to the community, I've come out of watching this video with a lot of insight into what I'm doing wrong and what I need to do right.

@AnQQu66 If it helps, go for it. I prefer to evade first and guard second, so I don't end up guarding much. If you think you'd prefer to have the safety then it can be handy. Guard+ and Constitution+ will help.

Aiming your Gunlance is more about feeling and experience than actually using your camera to look. But just in case, you're clawing your PSP, right? If not, google and learn it. :D

@FiestaFussel It's the moment of invulnerability. You get it right after you roll or hop by pressing X, and if you time it perfectly, you can hop/roll through attacks.

@ciborgification Shells don't do your Gunlances' element, but they will always do a tiny amount of fire damage. They also do fixed damage like a Ballista.

@fullaccount I know I actually thought about that but sometimes I seem to forget about the people who make the videos... I have a little question, when you shot a monster using the gunlance, does the damage done by that shot posses the same element has the lance, does it do fir damage or it doesn’t do any kind of damage, also is the damage done always the same like the ballista or does it posses the same raw damage has the lance that is being used? Quickly, White Fatalis's armour mode isn't strictly 10% of normal damage; all hitzones are reduced to '10' instead which in most cases is about 25% of normal damage. That said, shelling can be useful in very limited circumstances like Fatalis, but it's still more effective to bomb or Clust. So you're right that it's not useless, but I don't think it's ever a stellar option.

@donphanfan At low rank, shelling is worth using. And why use a GL over a lance? Different combos and reach and it's a little more mobile. Personally, I prefer lance though.

You should read up on the full formula, but the quick answer is no, it's not 50% of 840. There are a number of other factors going on, like the monster's defense, sharpness and other things that'll shrink your damage further.

Did you know the capacity up skill adds another shell? Its not much but every little bit helps. I use the Gunnery King and capacity up skills when I use GLs. Its fun to blow things up
