Hi again Ix. I am so glad you took the time to discuss the strengths of Sakura slash. When Rise first came out, I played on the switch and it was the first MH that I tried the longsword. I loved it, and was getting near-speed runs using it. I used helm breaker because of the internet scorn on Sakura. I picked up Sunbreak much later and went PC with it. I chose longsword again but I wanted to give Sakura a try, so I made a (weird I know) punishing draw build using double slash, overuse of special sheathe, and Sakura. It went shockingly well and I was getting even better times on it. I switched to bow out of boredom - which is how I found you - and so far haven't looked back. But thanks for discussing Sakura. It's a shockingly enjoyable play style if you can ignore the net complaints about skill.

Foresight slash will level up the sword if you avoid an attack with it( hear the Ding noise or the blue effect) than press the spirit attack(R2). It will do the final swing of the spirit combo which levels up the sword. Fastest way to get to red

it’s the first counter people should learn when starting out with longsword, and it should be used to charge your gauge when using spirit roundslash. when using spirit reckoning you should use iai spirit slash to charge your gauge. According to Peppo you should use spirit slash to charge your gauge, because it does more damage and consumes less sharpness than foresight slash, but it’s a bit higher commitment and has a tighter window, both are good for different scenarios. Foresight slash should still be apart of your kit to chain together counters for multi hit attacks, like foresight then cancel into iai spirit slash then serene pose or tempered spirit blade

Hey man. Many thanks for this guide. I've just gotten back into playing Monster Hunter and was relearning the weapons. So much has changed since tri... I haven't really had time to play any of the titles in between 3 ultimate and rise since school happened and then me getting a job. It's a real nice change of pace from what I'm used to considering that the only console I've had since high school was my "new"3dsll. Only recently was I able to find the time and grab a series s, and when I saw that rise was being released on gamepass, I was pretty stoked since I hadn't thought about Monster Hunter for a long time. This guide was very helpful, and the way you broke things down helped me make sense of what I was doing wrong with the LS. MHR is my first Monster Hunter game. I tried but never got into the OG ps2 version. MHR released on Gamepass, and I thought I'd give it another go, and... I'm hooked. Anyway, I've put in 85 Hrs so far, currently at HR 20. I've been using the longsword and had no idea how the sheath move worked or the special sheath. I had a basic idea of how the Spirit Gauge worked but finally fully understand it. 😅 I felt like a pro beating high-level hunts until I watched this video and realised I've barely scratched the surface of using the Long Sword! What a great guide! 👍

As a LS main I can share a few tricks: -Drawn double slash is usually better, but worse at cutting high tails in my experience. -You can use foresight slash to approach to the monster with both parts of the move, not just move away in the first part and then back in in the second. -I think the fastest move (or at least very useful) is the attack you get by pressing the thrust button without a left stick input right after a roll, and it lets you go straight to a special sheathe or a foresight slash. -The spirit combo doesn't need mind's eye because the weapon will never bounce during it.

After getting HR 50 with dual blades I decided I was gonna switch it up and learn some other weapons on the way to 100. Long sword was first on my list. Immediately went into the 7* Bazelguise fight not knowing shit about the weapon. 30 mins, 2 carts, and thousands of triangle button presses later I beat him. Wish I'd known about this video before lmao.

Oh also. After reckoning combo there is another great move. Put your weapon away then do another drawn double slash. Not ideal for all situations. But a great move with lots of spirit meter gain do quickly do another

I don't think you mentioned this in your video (correct me if I'm wrong) but if your Foresight Slash connects with a monster, you can go straight into your Spirit Combo Finisher which can be very helpful for raising your Spirit Level. Also, you NEED to have some Spirit Gauge filled in order to get the Hyper Armor/Guard Point (the blue sparks). Very important. Otherwise very great guide!

The only thing pertaining to LS that I would say you actually got wrong would be to the air moves. Red gives 3 hits, yellow gives 2 hits, and white + none give 1 hit. But otherwise great video. Love it. Finally someone does Sakura slashes justice.

Sakura slash is pretty useful and as a new long sword player I enjoy it more then helm breaker just because I don’t always have to counter I’m not horrible at it but it’s just way more convenient and does decent damage

With 10.0.2 long sword got taken back a bit. But GL lance and everything else got major fixes as well. What really was the nail in the coffin for me with this weapon was helm breaker cool down and execution. Very tight timing and I don't need that for my weapon. Subscribe to the Church of Switch axe.

Geez, this weapon. You don't have one extra resource to manage; you have two, charge and spirit. That's on top of the health, stamina and sharpness management you already have to do. And you don't get a guard. It's just two counters and a counter like special evade. Basically it's putting yourself in harm's way and either getting walloped or walloping the monster.

There is a thing I'm noticing that even when I use the Iai Spirit Slash, I'm not able to activate the multitude of slashes like you're doing. Am I doing something wrong, or?

you have to charge up your spirit meter (the thin line across the middle of the LS in your HUD) in order to do a spirit slash. Each successive spirit slash uses spirit meter, so you need to get it to near full if you want to do three spirit slashes in a row. The third spirit slash in a row will hit three times.

Having played quite a bit of LS in MHW, they have really done it a disservice with damage nerfs. I just started playing Rise, and I was unaware of the nerfs until around MR3. After my first MR Rathalos hunt took 20 minutes, with upgraded and on level weapons and armor, and doing consistent DPS, without reading any patch notes, it was obvious something was odd. I started looking up guides for Sunbreak, and eventually found out about the damage nerfs. I will say, mechanically, I think all but a few changes are great. That being said, the Aura special ability to compensate for the nerfs is an awful idea and executed terribly. Longsword is no longer the overpowered weapon it once was ( it honestly feels underpowered), but probably more fun to play than ever before. Besides a damage buff, the largest change I would like to see in future MHs would be to do away with the scroll system, and integrate many of the new attacks into button presses without needing a stance change. If the scroll/ stance system is to remain, it should function as nearly every other game with a similar system handles it, the stance swaps should be instant or at least be easily integrated into a combo. As it stands in Sunbreak, the scroll system is just another animation you have to worry about, that can get you smashed by a 200 foot, 50 ton crazed monster.
