Monster Hunter Stories 2 Co-op Explained

In today's Monster Hunter Stories 2 live event we got some co-op multiplayer gameplay, so I figured I'd break down how it works to the best of my ability. There's some speculation and wishes I have on it as well, so keep that in mind.

About the 6 monster slots and only being able to take 5, it's more likely that the 6th slot is reserved for Razewing Ratha or some story related monster because thats what it was like in the first game

I'm glad that those Co-op quests arent't strictly Multiplayer. Kulve Taroth and most likely Fatalis are probably gonna be quite tough with an AI partner but atleast I can do them with my wonky Wi-Fi.

Right, that was definitely a highlight for me. Most of my friends don't own a switch and the ones that do don't really play MH games lol. And as much as I love the series I'll never badger people into buying something

I really hope the AI partners are competent if they're forced upon you, and not the shit that Pokemon Sword & Shield pulled. Giving you pathetic AI partners like Magikarp who make the harder raids nearly impossible to complete offline is inexcusable.

@@FakeHeroFang Kayna and her Velocidrome are pretty damn strong in the Trial Edition. So the guy with the Legiana or Avinia and her Barioth should in theory be even more useful. Unless we get randomly generated AI partners that could have everything from an Aptonoth all the way up to Velkhana.

Of course you can't expect them to do as well as player made monsties, I just want them to at least not be dead weight lol

so imo if u notice on the video when the player joins midway into the quest the player inside the battle gets a little thing that says "Look, your friend is here to help!" and then it goes to load after u see then come in. all the while the other player is going trough the start of a battle things like navirou saying: "a plesioth etc etc" and then it pans back to you and then u start the fight. long story short i think its the proces of the other player starting the battle themselves that prompts the connecting screen. i hope i explained what i meant in an understandable way

At first I was very apprehensive when they said how much focus they had on co-op. I love the idea, but I know none of my friends are getting this game 😔 so I'll be solo. But then they said it will be possible solo. I hope that's actually true once we see it in final game lol. I'll have to try 😂 I doubt my friends will get the game and I'm super shy to try with randos (same thing with main MH games)

I was afraid about how important co-op would be in the game too, but I'm more than happy to play single-player. Hope the ai of the npc that comes to help will be adequate to the fights, and not being more of an hindance than help.

I've hoped for a coop exploration actually, but seems this one is limited to dungeons? What also bothers me is in the demo you had this felyne in the hub that would be able to launch coop with what wasn't unlocked for the demo, but in this demonstration it started from the quest board, so there might be the option to explore when talking to this felyne? Who knows.

it really feels weird that they havent shown story based coop. like the multiplayer looks really smooth and being in separate fights at the same time shows that it can support it. worst case scenario, me and my buddy just play alongside each other and do co-op when we reach story markers.

PVP and tournaments in MHS1 were teams of you and 3 monsties with the restriction that riders can't attack other riders.

I don’t think there will be lobbies like in Rise; the fact that turn-based fight needs a separate loading scene in solo means in multi game each battle needs to be synced again in addition to the beginning of the map.

The multi player is the only thing I'm worried about. I'm not playing with other people so I hope the game is more focused on single player, the multi player is just extra and that nothing is walled off behind multi player, like exclusive weapons or armor. If there is I'll be co-oping with myself using my Switch and my Switch lite. Becoming obsessed with monster hunter rise has saved my a few bucks, haven't bought another game since, so maybe I'll pick up two copies of stories and co-op myself.

It looks like the whole game revolves around "double" teams. Your going to get several diffent partners throughout the game, the online play however was a fun post game thing in stories one so I feel like they'll keep it like that.

You can coop with an AI partner so no need to buy multiple copies of the game.

@@robertomacetti7069 Deviants had horrible fights that sucked the fun out of their vanilla counterparts and replaced them with garbage mechanics that added nothing of substance. Just look at DreadKing. Almost always in the air, annoying fire ball spam, a massive AOE fire blast that serves the only purpose of limiting movement in the face of an already movement dependent fight, extreme speed you get the point. Also breaking the wings makes it venerable to flash bombs. Not only does that not make any sense, but it also is useless. You would already be about 10/12 or more through the fight before you get the chance to use the easy tool. So again they are dumb and don't deserve to return.

I'm really glad that they added co-op because I almost always want to play with friends if possible, but I think it's going to be annoying like you described where you'll have to invite your friend again for every quest you do together. I think MHW was like that too iirc, except this might have loading screens for every single battle you do which could quickly become tedious.

I'm hype for this game! Today's announcement really sold it for me and before I was wasn't too sure it was gonna be interesting but deviants, kulve, and all this post game stuff looks really good. Rise has starved us of content and this looks to fill that void. Only thing that I'm worried is the multiplayer looking kinda outdated. Seeing a connection screen for each encounter with a monster? Not a fan of that at all.

Well if you go inside a battle you have a loading screen even on single player so that's understandable.. At least it doesnt take that lon and you have the option to go in or not to help your friend.

Interesting game with actual endgame content, already more than I can say for Rise. Still looks and feels a bit like a child's game, but it definitely sounds much more thought out. Hopefully soon we get some information on the next World

I just did a coop expedition for the first time with a friend and we timed out and failed the quest?? What the hell, why did no one mention there was a time limit and why did the quest board not show it? Absolutely ridiculous and it wasted my SR ticket.

No confirmation, but I’m willing to bet no. World pc doesn’t cross play with world on console either and they haven’t ever done it before so I don’t think they will for this game. I doubt next year when rise comes to pc as well there will be for rise either.

Also the entire genes system that'll allow us to personalize monsters... we're in for a good time. :)
