I can't call GU one of the older games. Arts and styles are too emphasized in the gameplay. Sure, you can cut out Hunter arts, but you still don't get quite the same experience. Using guild without arts will still give you speed eating when someone uses an sp art, using striker completely shafts some weapons. Armor skills are balanced around the mindset that your arts and styles are roughly equal to an armor skill, so you're much more limited in what skills you can get. Deviant weapons are balanced around filling your Hunter arts faster. I'm glad people like the game, but it's not classic MonHun.

For example, I use critical juncture quite a bit in mhgu, so serene pose was a yes for me. Not many ls users like using serene pose due to the many counters ls already has, but because critical juncture was pretty much identical to it, I know how to use it effectively.

I have to say, it really is a blast going backwards in the series. I just finished my playthrough of Monster Hunter Tri and it was surprisingly fun seeing what made it unique and how far the series has come since then. Underwater combat was a fun -- albeit woefully underexplored -- mechanic, the custom bowgun system was extremely interesting, and Tri being the game that introduced both Leviathans and Brute Wyverns had a great (albeit quite shallow) variety of monsters. However, combat was stiffer than in later iterations, having to straight up unlock the ability to craft Switch Axes and Longswords was tedious, and the lack of high rank made the game feel especially short. But I still enjoyed my time with it, and am looking forward to diving deeper into the series past with Freedom Unite.

The moveset loses almost nothing of interest, while giving Sword mode the Adept power guard (which shortcuts straight into red shield charge) and giving Axe mode the usual Adept dodge. A note about Aerial Style: Apex Gaming has a great video about it, but it is not a style focussed on merely mounting. While on the surface it may look that way the aerial vault which replaces your normal dodge roll is a potent counter, letting you turn monster attacks into openings for massive, stylish counterattacks depending on the weapon. Not only that, but depending on the weapon it allows you to go hyper aggressive if you know the monsters attacks and timings well enough (did you know you could vault off of Glavenus tailspin? Or Rathalos poison dive?). Of course it depends on the weapon; some have their best moves or even critical combopieces locked behind the vault (Longsword), but it doesnt change the fact that it allows you so much freedom to be as aggressive as you can be. My go-to Weapon-Style combination is Aerial Insectglaive, and boy does the longvault make a difference. Anyway, here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIu5kGl3rrStbNE

Going back in the games will make you a better hunter. One of the things with world is that it adjusts for solo play. In the portables you have village (solo) hunting hub and gathering (multiplayer) hunting hubs. The gathering hub is weighted for multiple hunters, so you are soloing a 4 man weighted hunt, and the village hub usually stops at low rank or high rank if its an "ultimate" version of the game. Trust me if you go into 3U, 4U, or GU and solo yourself into G rank you will be a competent hunter. Will you be a world class speed runner? No but you will be capable of fighting anything the game throws at you and you will also become a more competent teammate in multiplayer. I vastly prefer playing with teammates but solo hunting, especially gathering hub hunts, just sharpens your skills so much more than online. Its easier to get by when 3 other people are picking up your slack. For those going into Rise worried about solo hunts its really not that bad. Also you can go online and get end game gear and then go back and blow through all but the last few village missions. The last villages missions will still test your competency. I just finished Out of the Fry Pan in Generations (Arena hunt - start with Deviljho with high HP and then fight Tigrex and Narga at the same time) it was a good achievement to show me that I still had the magic. Playing the village or solo in general will generally teach you to take your time and not get greedy. To win you first have to not lose. Beaucoup DPS is great as long as you don't triple cart out of the hunt.

Just a heads up to anyone play GU: the game runs at 30 FPS due to the particle effects from Hunter Arts, which is half the speed of 4U and World. 3:20 I don't mind builds being like this, but I hate that you need min maxed builds just to have a chance at killing Fatalis or meeting Alatreon's DPS check for Escaton Judgment. 6:04 You can meld those decos in Iceborne now so it isn't a big deal.

I remember getting destroyed by tigrex in Freedom Unite when I was 5. One little step gets your health down by half. I loved the feeling when I first beat that annoying congolala too. Now World/Iceborne was pretty easy...

Imo the biggest difference and what makes the older games ultimately shine more than their newer counterparts is the game tempo. In IB/Rise you pick the quest, you run to the monster and beat it in flashy style. In GU you pick the quest, then you're immediately decelerated because you have to look for the monster, then it picks up when you fight it, then it decelerates again when you have to chase after it, which lets you check your inventory, reflect on the fight and what not. It gives time for stuff to sink in. Then the fight reaccelerates when you fight the monster. Imo a pretty perfect balance that has been completely dropped by newer iteration Monster Hunter games. The newer games are much more engaging, but GU- is a much more wholesome gaming experience. Really makes you feel like a hunter strolling the lands looking for big monsters, as opposed to the fighter you become with the newer generations.

That monster you blurred out is probably a favorite for me. I know exactly what it is, and honestly. I just loved fighting it. I'm still trying to figure out what style and weapon I wanna use, bouncing between SnS and LS, and I'm in G2 lol

What I miss about early-mid game of Gen is my whole approach to small personal goals. I'll see something I want to build, plan out how I'll grind that monster for it, plan out a whole set to most efficiently hunt that particular monster, craft that set out, repeat the whole process if building said set will also take some grinding... but now there's way more one-size-fits-all sets, and such expanded flexibility of skills to the point that armor sets barely even matter most of the time. I hope Rise locks it down a bit more again, goes way harder on elemental damange, status effect resistance and infliction, maybe even have more monsters that are best fought with particular weapon types to push you to try stuff outside your comfort zone. Too much flexibility and accommodation to every single hunter and their preferred hunting style, and the entire incentive for the game loop breaks down.

100% agree with this! Generations Ultimate was such a damn good game with all it's mechanics and monsters as well as being a fantastic send off to the classic monster hunters! :D

Number one reason to play older games: offering yourself on a platter when drinking.

Great vid. I went from MH4U to World. ( I got the 3ds with 4u super late into its life) but wish I went and got GenU

couple addition style rec's, that you didn't put in your video: Valor Insect glaive: best version of having you kinsect fight with you (plus it's my second fav style combo only behind aerial IG) Striker SnS: Basically guild SnS but with three hunter arts, and all SnS hunter arts are incredible Valor DB: allows you to be really aggressive while keeping your sharpness at max

I never even noticed or thought about that detail with Nerscylla. That's pretty cool honestly. Leave it to the Monster Hunter devs to bring in little details like that.

Yes we need more players! I require team mates to farm the event white Fatalis for its GX armour... Not a single soul online has qued up for that hunt with me in ages and I still need it done... 😞

I never go full dps. WE, CB, CE and all that is in basically any of my builds but I make sure they are comfy too. I want to play relaxed from my bed but not for half an hour straight.

Considering the huge time investment that MH games demand, I'd suggest to take this video with a whole shaker of salt. It's easy to say that having played it is good, but jumping in right now when we don't even know which monsters and other elements are in Rise is premature and can lead to highly undesirable situations, like not having enough time to play either game properly, or having to force through GenU too fast with Rise breathing down your neck. GenU is already old. It won't get much older even if you play it _after_ Rise. You don't _need_ to play it _before_ Rise.

As a relatively new hunter, I really want to get into GenU, with the varying styles, monsters, and builds, but the only thing is that hub quests are a bit jarring to me. I want to prove myself versus each monster before going online, but the hardest quests are locked behind multiplayer health scaling. I love hunting with others online, but would like to play solo first. Is doing this an acceptable/fun way to do the majority of quests? I need advice.
@CaptainEffort3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Loads of people play through the hub solo. It’s not easy, but entirely doable. Although I’d still recommend doing village quests first.

@@Zyckro all mh games can be done solo I solo'd all of freedom unite, freedom, and 3U. There's a more heavy focus on preparation and having the right armor and elemental weapons due to no scaling, however if you solo you still have both your palicos which do provide plenty of help with the right builds.

I myself am a solo hunter mostly (Sometimes I hunt with my little brothers who I invited to the game) and I can tell you this: There isn't a monster you can't kill alone. Mind you, there will be a wall here or there that would be easier with more bodies to throw at it, you might get wrecked by a Rajang here or Deviljho there, but EVERY monster can be done alone. I can speak for myself, there is a satisfying feeling seeing that quest complete screen after killing a really tough or difficult monster. Besides, don't forget, its a game. YOU want to solo the monsters first before joining online, that should be all that matters. Play the game the way that makes it come alive for you, every hunter has their own style and there's room at the table for many types.
