QUICK TIP ! Not mentioned by any KZbin Gunlance Turtorial. Overhead smash and wide sweep doesn't not bounce off from monsters only rising slash , quick jab and lunging slash do, Therefore replace the 1st hit of the combo with A shelling attack then do quick reload then ∆+O you can go into overhead smash, full burst , wide sweep , quick reload back to overhead smash and loop it without worrying about weapon bounce

Note for anyone reading this two years later that while they don't bounce, they do do virtually no damage, so rather than doing this you should just wound the part you're trying to damage or whack a different part.
Love the tutorial, great as always, but you forgot to mention a few moves. 1. By pressing RT/R2 (default) while airborne it will activate the airborne overhead smash and can be followed up with a full burst or a wide sweep. 2. You forgot to mention the Artillery skill's ability to half the Wyvern's Fire cooldown, which is very useful, especially for Wide shelling type gunlances. 3. I noticed that not a lot of people know about this, but when you are charging up Wyvern's Fire, if you hold LT/L2 (default) you can aim you shot as you would a ranged weapon! This little tip has saved my Wyvern's Fire from missing on many occasions.

Also, focus reduces the amount of time it takes to fire a charged shot which is the only way to make charged shots(and thus basically the long shot type in general) tuly viable...
@lifebaka6 жыл бұрын
Also, when charging shells, you can adjust the angle you're firing them at between the normal horizontal (what you'd normally have after a lateral thrust), the 45 degree angle (what you'd normally have after a guard thrust), and straight up (what you'd normally have after the upthrust). If you're using charged shells a lot, you can use this to aim higher up on the monster to avoid knocking around teammates (not like your damage cares where it hits the monster), or to focus on breaking higher parts. Also also, while guarding, you can hold L2 to strafe. Super useful if you need to face a certain direction to block an attack, but want to move in another direction.
@Synthdata6 жыл бұрын
Zachary D'Abramo Also if I remember correctly the airborne R2 also quick reloads in the air before the smash, so you can pull this move by a ledge or hill to go into a full burst even with no ammo.

There is one Gunlance move missing from this video, when charging a "charged shell" you can actually press "up/forward" on the analog to go from shooting straight into an angle, if you quickly press "up/forward" again you go from angled to shooting straight up, but it has to be done quickly before the charged shell is fired. Hope that helped.

Also of note, while charging a shell, you can tap forward and back on the left thumbstick to change your angle of fire, and will also allow you to perpetually delay your charge shot if you need to wait for a monster to be in a certain position. Additionally, you can tap R2 while jumping off a ledge to slam the ground with an overhead attack that reloads your weapon.

I recommend Partbreaker on any gunlance armor build; whether you're trying to get a rare drop that requires breaking a part, or just want to weaken a monster by destroying their toughest / most dangerous areas, there's nothing better than a shaped-explosive charge on the end of a stick (that can also cut off tails). Quick Sheathing is another incredibly useful skill, because most monsters aren't just going to park themselves within reach of your gunlance and let you stay engaged with them (especially not in a group hunt where they'll have other people to chase). Being able to sheath your weapon super-quick means you can start running or utilize your slinger on a moment's notice.

12:08 a quick note, as someone who has done around 280 gunlance hunts in world - you can aim your wyvern's fire!! i found this out watching an old beta livestream, but if you hold L2 while your wyvern's fire is burning, you can then aim it freely like a ranged weapon or a glaive kinsect, this allows you to aim it over people's heads, hit taller monsters, and when grinding Kulve Taroth it came in very handy to precisely use the move on her horns

Thanks so much for the combo info! I'm a recent convert to the joy of blocking and so I've been using lance and gunlance a lot, gunlance has been harder though due to me not knowing some things like the reload cancelling attacks and being a way to skip to the full burst. Though I will disagree on one thing, with focus and artillery you can very easily include wyvern's fire into regular gameplay. The recharge takes half the time, and focus makes the attack come out faster. Combine the two and you can easily get out two to four wyvern's fire in a hunt, they do impressive damage to any body part so I like to use them on parts that I bounce on.

I would like to put this out there in case it helps someone. If you're having a hard time with the game and your current weapon isn't working for you, I strongly recommend trying out the GL. If,like me, you've been thinking that it looks too complex and you don't think it will work for you due to your current skill level, then you're wrong. I figured that I wouldn't be able to handle GL, but once I got around to trying it, I had a blast(pun intended), and it helped me improve in a lot of other areas too. It can also deal crazy damage. I went up against monsters that I was having to chase down and started dropping them in half the time it usually took me. Just give it a try.

I'd like to add that shelling has a hidden exhaustion damage value, and shelling a monster's head can make it fall asleep if you do it enough. Depending on how often you use gunlance, you may have seen this a few times. Almost every weapon has a hidden damage value that varies based on attacks used. For example, dual swords have high trip damage on the beyblade attack, and greatsword's tackle has high interruption damage. ~It's why raw damage is not the end-all-be-all in Monster Hunter like other games~ Every weapon's got something about it you can't see. It seems this is all lost info to world, as I scoured the internet before posting this, and it seems hidden values have been forgotten entirely since you can see raw damage numbers now. I say try it yourself, you may notice certain weapons do special things.

Exhaust isn’t the same as sleep. Exhaust just makes the monster unable to use certain attacks and makes them clumsy.
@ishakuraigami61716 жыл бұрын
You're right, exhaust isn't the same as sleep. However, if a monster runs out of stamina or just too low, it will go to sleep on the spot. Low stamina simply makes them clumsy. None puts them out. If I'm not mistaken, Hunting Horn and Gunlances exhaustion damages are also independent of sleep ailment's threshold and are treated differently. Monster's go to sleep as their health goes down because they are also running low on stamina, however some will eat if they only go down to a certain point.
@ishakuraigami61716 жыл бұрын
Excuse me, Monsters* go to sleep. And don't worry, this is far from my first monster hunter. And sorry, it is often called STAMINA damage. Exhaust is an ailment that just causes the monster's stamina to drop suddenly, which a monster may try to sleep simply to get back stamina. After double-checking, it is ENTIRELY independent of sleep ailment, and works in a different way. This is also a prime time to get that monster to eat something, say some tinged meat you put down. Or maybe some drugged meat to put him to sleep anyway ;P
@darthplagueis136 жыл бұрын
Exhaustion alone doesn´t result in the monster sleeping. If you exhaust the monster it will most likely run away and try to find somthing to eat. To make a monster go sleep you will either have to use a weapon with the sleep status ailment or deal enough damage to it that it is capready and starts limping to its nest. Exhaustion is often coupled with stun/K.O damage though, pretty much all attacks capable of knocking out the monster will also exhaust it(although this sadly doesn´t always go the other way around so you won´t be K.Oing monsters with your gunlance any time soon).

@ishakuraigami61716 жыл бұрын
It's pretty simple, just don't try to exclusively use your aerial attacks. Get your 3 extracts, then focus on ground attacks, they're where your damage is at. Mix in your aerials as combo finishers or to chase the monster with an air dash if he moves away, try to stay out of the air if you want to do damage and actually be ready to avoid taking it. I also recommend a kinsect with high speed so that you can send it back in forth extremely fast to get your extracts. And don't forget that circle and back is a sweet dodge attack.

I’m still a rookie gunlancer so this video is a godsend, on that note I’m curious on elements and status effects. Are they good or needed for gunlances or should I focus on raw damage?
@MansMan420696 жыл бұрын
Not as much as compared to Lance if you're focused on shelling attacks. I use the physical attacks mainly so it'll benefit me more.

Gunlance has surprised me with how fun and versatile it is. It has become my go to weapon until I get comfortable with new monsters. Thanks for another great video!

If someone is reading this comment: -while charging a shell you can aim it upwards by tapping up (the timing is wonky). Can choose from 3 different heights, and as long as you are switching heights, the sheel wont fire. -You can aim Wyvern's fire vertically by holding L2 while its charging -jumping from a ledge with the running upward thrust automatically reloads your shells so you can always end with a full burst. -You can loop the upwards thrust with a shell inbetween to reach those hard to hit places. Wonky and slow but more reach and damage than the guard thrust combo.

Yup, and that's something I fucking LOVE about this game. That is not something many games can't pull off, even ones where replayability is one of a games main selling points. One of many reasons why I feel like this is the best 60$ I've spent in a LONG time.

Something I haven’t seen anyone mention yet is the versatility and speed of the guard thrust. Unlike a good amount of the other weapons I’ve experimented with Gunlance’s is kinda the best. It’s quicker than Lance’s by a wide margin, hits high enough that it can poke flying monsters, and can be chained two or three times. It’s damage is lacking sure but that’s fine considering you can actually get in your pokes between a monster’s attacks. It’s been a good while since I’ve properly played around with it but I recall some of the slower multi hits and combos being VERY fun to toy with, getting in a quick poke or two before I’m guarding just in time to trigger my offensive guard. Beyond that though, the shimmy. You can hold down your movement and CONSTANTLY be adjusting your angle to keep that big ol arm mounted wall between you and your target, and shift that shimmy into a guard thrust without any worry of accidentally inputting a shield jump or some other move you didn’t want to do since you didn’t let off the move stick fast enough. (And the reason said movement is important is cause it actually lets you regen your stamina while blocking.)

I am not proficient in this weapon at all, anyone who is has my respect. As a more speed based player often using dual blades, having a tank able to use this weapon like a pro is a massive help.
@GG-ji4yx6 жыл бұрын
Do you think charge blade is complicated?
@ishakuraigami61716 жыл бұрын
Charge Blade is actually really simple as soon as you learn the combos. It requires little-to-no knowledge about the monster to use effectively, and has a lot of combos you can get out of, but sacrifice damage for. It only has one attack that you really have to commit to, and for all the build up, I don't think I see a single attack miss more often when someone's using it online. Well, unless you count them hitting teammates with it.
@ishakuraigami61716 жыл бұрын
Oh, and it's a very different play style from dual swords, but both are fun. Gunlance will use more patience. You don't need to chase a monster around the area, he'll come back to attack you, and you just punish him for it. >when someone says you can't gunlance odogaron.

We're taking Gunlance here - go away. No offence, but you CB guys had your 2 minutes of fame way before us, because "Muh CB! (and also "Muh Longsword!") " 😉😂
@Wolfs0n6 жыл бұрын
I never said anything about the charge blade. I can manage one if my team needs me to but I prefer the dual blades ever since the original Monster Hunter on PS2. Honesty when I was practicing my charge blade here I found it rather easy to cheese your way through most fights so I avoided using it unless my team needed me to. All I said was I am not proficient with the Gun Lance. Everyone has their specialty and dual blades are mine. You need an element or status to proc? I'm your guy. You need a speedy dodger with the challenger mantel to take the agro off You? I'm your guy. Speed and versatility are just my thing and I personally just can't master the Gun Lance to the point where I would be able to help my team I would only slow them down. So I use what I am best with to help my team to the full extent of my ability.

This tutorial actually made me put down SnS and give it a try and ohh boy it is fun! Sure I'll miss using my slinger with my weapon unsheathed but the satisfying full bursts just fill me with happiness. Good work on these tutorials Arrekz!

Use artillery lvl3 + Capacity You'll probably get 39 per shell. Not sure if the food skill bombardier affects the wyvren blast. Tho i almost get 370 when i hit a sleeping monster It's not much compared to greatsword and charge blade :(
@Nlightfoot6 жыл бұрын
Don't have a long 4 funlance yet, but artillery 3 gives somewhere in the 80's for long 3 charge shots (while at max sharpness)
@elizabethhicks41816 жыл бұрын
The reason why the Wyvern's Fire isn't the best thing for waking up a monster is because it's actually four hits, not one. Think of the explosion as divided into four parts by length, so if you want to get the most out of it, you have to hit all four parts of it. Additionally, since it's four separate attacks, only one of the parts will get the wake up damage, even if you hit all four on the sleeping monster. So yes, Gunlance people. Your Wyvernfire is shiny, but let the Greatsword guy make the wake up hit!

Nate Lightfoot youre gonna love lvl4 longs my friend. 100 dmg a charged shot
@aaroncsoka72946 жыл бұрын
I get 54 per shell, 110 with charged shelling (which I can do 3 times in a row - even stronger than full blast - but slower oc)
@aaroncsoka72946 жыл бұрын
Also if you focus on DMG values you're lost anyways. You need to judge DMG inter-sectionally - meaning not comparing any weapon types DMG to any other weapon types DMG. You need to compare Katanas only, GL's only, and so on. Remember...every weapon on MH is like every unique char in Tekken, Street Fighter & so on. It's no use comparing the DMG Feng can do with the DMG Xiaou can do & so on. ...if you get what I'm saying 😅

Wonderful guide! As a veteran GL user from the older games, the new combos took some time to adjust to. As a normal GL user, I recommend the rathian GL since you get more utility out of poisoning the monster as well as shelling. If you have capacity up, you can do 3 points of guard and guard up for the defensive side, then at least 3 points of artillery. Remember that each point of artillery reduces the cool down for wyvern fire, so it is by far the most useful skill for the weapon itself.

A couple minor tricks you forgot to mention, pressing R2 after the jumping rising slash, ledge jump or wall jump initiates the aerial overhead smash as well. And a neat trick I've used a lot is while charging a charged shell, you can use the left stick up or down to change the aim angle of your shot, which is useful for making charge shots count on moving targets. Great video. Gunlance forever.

Points to add: 1. Charged shelling benefits from the Focus skill. 2. Jumping Smashes can be done from a Jumping Rising Slash with R2. 3. If you have empty shells, Jumping Smash becomes Jumping Reload Smash which includes a quick reload. 4. Jumping Reload Smashes from Lunging Upthrust into a wall will also reload the wyrmstake. You do also need empty shells otherwise it'll just be a Jumping Smash. 5. Wyvern's Fire can be aimed by also holding L2 and directing with the right stick. 6. Moving while guarding will allow stamina to replenish (applies to all weapons with shields I believe). 7. Wyrmstake has two thrusts with the 2nd thrust actually applying the stake. As seen at 10:08 the first thrust can miss but the as long as the 2nd thrust connects it works. This also means that you can hit with the 1st thrust but still miss with the 2nd and lose out on the stake.
