I agree, but got to hand it to them they did a FAR better job than previous mh titles. You know those little pop ups you get when you find a new feature? They didn’t exist and there was no substitute for them. They just gave you an sns to start with and said absolutely nothing in mh4u 😂

@@evelync4930 The first time I played Monster Hunter Freedom comes to mind. It was the game that introduced me to the series, and the way you learned was by experience only. There were no crafting trees, there were just lists and there were no prompts, if you wanted to learn to use a weapon you either had to go out into the field and use them or go to the training center and get a quest to use them. This made me dislike it at first, but then I somehow started liking it and Monster Hunter World is now my favourite game. I highly recommend to, as Yahtzee puts it, bash your head against the wall and see if your opinion changes at all, because mine did.

Kinda, but not really. LS is damned near invincible. Once you learn how to reliably do the warp slash, you can completely negate damn near every attack in the game without needing to build with a single defensive skill. I think that's why it was given 3 stars, as well as having reliably decent damage, and an inherent Mind's Eye set of moves (Spirit Combo)

I realized we were the monsters once I figured out that "Mosshide" comes from the Mosshide pigs you see in the ancient forests. I had avoided killing these little guys cuz I thought they were cute, also they didn't bug me. But I need the mosshide, so I killed it. And then I started killing everything else since I realized that the small animals are also resource givers. And then I realized that I was the monster! The Hunter, who is a Monster.

AkaiAzul I agree. I’ve spent a lot of time on Unite and 4U (Also a little portable 3rd) so it’s practically unheard of for me to timeout, but back when I was a newbie playing Unite, I practically timed out in my first Tigrex/Nargacuga encounter because I was dodging too much, not to mention taking several tries on elder dragons that run away after the time is up and the battle resumed in another mission. Monster Hunter has a very steep learning curve and that time limit is a part of it.

Its a lot of getting used to standing under the monster and knowing when you will be safe. The speed at which you can adapt to its moves and how quickly you can get back under it. Most hunts take me 5-30 minutes depending on more factors than you can shake a stick at, I almost timed out the first time I face a Baroth on Tri... but I got carted twice and had run out of healing items XD fun times. That is part of the beauty of Monster Hunter.

Yahtzee is an important reviewer because he's a casual in the sense that he values his time in a way that means he doesn't have the patience to wait 20+ hours for a game to get good; but he has the experience to know when a game works mechanically and has charm. You can see this at work in this review when he compliments parts of the game but clearly doesn't have the patience or desire to really study the game to squeeze optimization out of it. Whether the fact that the game didn't grab him and demand his unwavering attention is his fault or the game's is up to the viewer.

Yeah, the story is pretty barebones, but it does have ONE aspect that I adore. That being that your character actually does shit. There are so many games where you make a custom character and then proceed to watch in every cutscene as they are saved by the next npc with actual personality and motives you come across, while they bum around picking their nose. But in Monster Hunter, when someone's about to get ate by a Monster it's YOU that jumps in to save the day. Just really satisfying to not have a create-a-character be such a mindless jerkoff for once.

XRXaholic It's always fun to joke about but it's not. This one doesn't do a good job of establishing that killing these monsters has a reason. Which is typically they either put an entire ecosystem in danger or an invasive specices or threatens the lives of a village or town or it's a fucking world ender. Which is why it's called MONSTER hunter. Imagine feeling bad for killing the boogyman or Slenderman or Freddy Kruger.
@XRXaholic
@XRXaholic 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure I buy that. If these "monster" populations evolved within an ecosystem and were not somehow artificially introduced into it by natural disaster or say human meddling (in which case, it is again the sentient beings at fault, not really the "monsters"), then they can't really have a long-term negative impact on the ecosystem by default. Apex predators naturally follow the cycle of increasing their population until it becomes unsustainable (because they've eaten a lot of the prey), experiencing a population decline while letting the prey population replenish, and beginning the cycle once again. The ecosystem remains in equilibrium. As for threatening the lives of a village or whatever, most of that occurs when human settlements begin developing land and encroaching on natural habitats, destroying hunting and grazing land, and squeezing animals into smaller and smaller natural habitats that they can't easily migrate out of. Again, this is primarily a human issue. Animals or "monsters" will only react to being threatened.
@bearthecamper
@bearthecamper 6 жыл бұрын
For a lot of people stating that this is just human cruelty or what not to the monsters, the actual story explains as to why we are even here. SPOILERS!!!! _-------------------- You start off simply researching why these creatures known as elder dragons are all mysteriously converging on this one chunk of land, and they do it every 10 years, have you progressed through the game you find out more about how the ecosystem of the land works and how it relates to the monsters, and then you find out that something has happened and some part of the ecosystem has become fucked in the thrown out of whack, not because of the humans but because of the monsters, so then towards end game you have to chase down a particular monster or else something is going to happen that's going to destroy the ecosystem across the entire continent and cause it to become nothing but a smoldering pile of rock basically as if Yellowstone were to erupt, so there is a legit reason for us to be there, we want to live
@Chaogod1233
@Chaogod1233 6 жыл бұрын
XRXaholic No literally these monsters are the equivalent of mudslides or natural disasters. There are some who would wipe out entire specices if left unchecked and making a lot of other life extinct. And humans need a place to live too. Not like hunters are building freeway's on the homes of the monsters or huge sprawling cities. It's just usually a small village that's most of the time out of the way of stepping on the toes of the environment. Just some monsters start problems in even those areas. At the end of the day they can leave the monsters alone but again if it's not for the monster hunters then there wouldn't be anything left. Especially in the case of the world enders like Xenojiva in this game who if had fully matured would start an all out war with the other Elder dragons.

Monster Hunter lore where human and wyverians are rare, and Hunters are decedants of super soldiers, even rarer. Monsters and Elder Dragon rule the world, humanity just came out of decline and rebuilding with lost technology, is improving since Gunner and Blademaster armor are United as one. If you played and follow the series (yes even the mobile version) human we're once super advance race that coexisted with the elder dragon, greed for power led to the downfall of humanity, human build towers out of elder dragon scales, build anti-dragon living machine, yet victory comes with the dark ages of declined. However human rebuild quick, weapons and armor are increasing more advanced, yet humanity never regained the coexistence with the elder dragon, they are lost forever.

Naw this isn't poaching. Most of the monsters we fight would somehow fuck up the enviroment if left unchecked. In Monhun, humans are a part of nature as well. In terms of Monster hunter stories, I think that Monster Hunter 4 is the closest the series had to have an overarching plot. The build-up for the elder dragon of that game is the best this series has seen, not that it is saying much. The first hint you are given is that the Caravaneer you come into town with shows you a golden scale and that he wants to find out the story behind it. From there, you having to fight off the elder dragon, called Gore Mangala twice before you could actually hunt it. When you do finally beat it you find out that it was an adolescent dragon, and this supplemented by a scene that implies that the Gore Mangala you just beat is not only still alive, but that it just shed its skin. Then you learn that the Gore Mangala's adult form caused a mass breakout that caused an entire hunting area to go into a frenzy, and be sealed off because it was deemed too dangerous. You are later shown a cutscene of an monster getting knocked down, getting back up as the infection takes over, and turning on its own. Showing you exactly what will happen if you fail to slay the Shagaru Magala. All this buildup to the Shagaru Magala is meet with the hunter and the titular monster circling each other. Like two Apex Predators about to square off to the death. The fight is fairly difficult as well. There is a reason people call the rock in the middle of the arena the safety rock. Best of all, it all ties into the beginning. The scale that the caravaneer found all those years ago was the scale of a Shagaru Magala.

The Shagaru Magala fight was probably my favorite part of any MH game up to now (haven't played World yet) because the combination of the overarching plot, the monster's new form and the beautiful yet dangerous particle effects, the relative difficulty of the encounter, and of course the music. It honestly felt like I was at the conclusion of an epic tale, and I was the brave hero facing down this rival of mine, this monstrosity of unknown origins, in a final bout to the death. Then I farmed it for the armor

Other titles in the series have had fakeouts like that, though afaik 4/4U is the only time there's been that much of a chekhov's gun or that the fakeout has actually been the "final boss" itself (ie the fakeout was that gore magala was the big threat and was dead, when in fact shagaru magala was the big threat and gore was merely its juvenile form, AND didn't actually die). In MH1, the fakeout is Lao Shan Lung, a mountain-sized elder dragon, migrating outside of its usual habitat and straight through a human city, which will be destroyed if you don't slay it. It turns out that this Lao (which was merely a juvenile, apparently the adults are even larger) was actually fleeing from the true threat, the cruel and vicious dragon Fatalis, which wiped out the neighboring kingdom of Schrade overnight and killed its entire population of both humans and dragons (including Lao's parents). So you killed an orphan, good job asshole. In MH3, the fakeout is that Lagiacrus, an electric leviathan, is causing the earthquakes around the fishing village of Moga. In fact Lagiacrus has only become more active because of the earthquakes in the first place, and they are actually caused by a vast deep sea dragon known as Ceadeus, thought to be merely a myth by the guild, which rams its head into the walls of a sunken ruin to alleviate the pain of its twisted, overgrown horn pressing on its skull. MHXX seems to have a fakeout or two as well, though I can't read much Japanese so I'm not really sure what it is. I just know that a huge deal is made about the jetpack dragon Valphalk, which appears in the sky during every quest as a glinting red "star" (actually the light from its exhaust), but then after you defeat it you are told that it has some connection to some kind of ruin, which turns out to be a hulking metal dragon controlled via silk strands by the treasure-hoarding mantis Atlal-ka. There's also a Lao not long before you hunt Atlal-ka, but I really do not know why. Oh and of course Zorah Magdaros is the fakeout in World. In actuality the whole bizarre elder dragon "ecosystem" in the New World is essentially a reptilian conspiracy, but that's all I'll say on the matter since I'm sure some people care about spoilers in this more story-heavy title :^)

I'm new to Monster Hunter but have to say I'm enjoying it one hell of a lot. It feels like a breath of fresh air to be honest. It's somehow over the top and also feels somehow authentic. As in everything is massive and the concept is kinda silly but the way it all moves and feels is sublime. It's got such good weight and movement to it all. That and it's so nice to play a game that's not trying to crotch thrust micro-transactions at you.

Man, you cannot imagine. So many years ago, I was so very upset that Monster Hunter Tri, a game that I had come to love and adore as my entry-point into the Monster Hunter series, felt like it just got shat on by Yahtzee without him actually putting the work in to get very far. And then the Extra Punctuation came out and it just bothered me even more. Here was a content creator who I had actually come to enjoy, and was actually looking forward to him roasting my favourite game at the time a bit, and it felt like he just... gave up. Like it wasn't worth the effort to him. And finally, so many years later, he comes back to the series, and it seems like he's finally starting to get it. At least, enough so to actually put effort in. The feeling I get from watching this... ... ...it's a strange kind of catharsis, to finally be released from such a long-lasting bitterness. I enjoyed watching this. (I'll still never get over that he couldn't seem to beat Resident Evil Revelations's final boss though.)

So, how many times on average do you have to fight a monster to get decent armor or whatnot? Does the combat keep you hooked? I'm a Souls fan but am so on the fence about this game.
@koloth5139
@koloth5139 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you mean by decent. There are 2 tiers in the game and then there is the end game stuff. Low rank you don't really need to worry about repeatedly killing monsters. You will make a couple of things here and there to get you an advantage against the next monster but you won't be making sets. High rank you might need to consider your armor a bit more carefully but you're still not really going to be making sets. End game you get to fight much harder variants of all the monsters and this is where you will be making armor sets to specifically deal with a particular monster. And that is where you will kill a monster dozens and dozens of times. But to just get one full armor set it is about 4 to 6 kills on average. For instance recently they released Deviljho into the game. He is a high rank monster and was underwhelming because most of us were end game. So this weekend they did an event with a tempered Deviljho. That thing kicked many a players butts. It forced people to consider their gear more appropriately and work together. It was easily a 30 to 40 minute fight for people that were well prepared. Mind you there are people doing speed runs of the end game content and this thing was still kicking peoples butts. Does it keep you hooked? I can't speak for you, but yes it has kept me hooked for 370+ hours now. Well worth my $60. You should get at least 60 hours out of it just for the story such that it is.

To be honest, though the games don't put their story as first priority, there IS a very good plot behind each game... Well maybe each game except Dark Souls 2, and even that had some pretty neat characters. You'd have to dig really deep (or look for Vaati's videos) to understand the lore, but if you do, it's pretty awesome! Makes all the boss fights more epic when you know exactly who they are and why they're there facing you.

I remember playing my first monster hunter game on the PSP. But then I realised I couldn't really play any online missions cause, who the heck still uses a PSP. I tried out the MHW beta and it's a pretty dam good RPG, but best played with friends.

Vince Gamboa I have gone through the whole game solo and I have had a great time. I believe I am about to the end of the main story. Just one more Elder I believe. After this I plan to play with my friends. I like know I can solo everything and enjoying the story before a bunch of other people come in and start messing about with my stuff.

In all fairness the series was created with co-op in mind.

See you got the title all wrong, Monster Hunter isn't about hunting monsters, it's that we are monsters that also hunt. Kestodons learned this the hard way, during the "they're having a lovely nap on the beach, murder them all" mission. I used their children's parts to make bombs. I am the monster, and also a hunter.

Yahtzee: I had a hard time getting into this game because I kept having to kill things for poorly explained reasons and I felt like a bit of a bastard. Also Yahtzee: Spec Ops The Line is a beautiful perfect game of perfect perfection. I love that its gameplay is basically all the shittiest bits of Uncharted rolled into one. 10/10.

Elmo9001 in one case the need to murder was used as a plot point to actually provide satire/commentary to the fps genre and how those games make light of killing. The irony in having fun was the point. Here you kill things to have fun. No irony, no satire, no commentary, killing the monsters is the fun of the game. Nothing against MH but you're making a massive false equivalency

Never actually played Monster Hunter, I just never miss an opportunity to bring up how I think Spec Ops is pretentious garbage trash. "Ooh, it's so satirical, how this game IRONICALLY uses constant chest-high walls and regenerating health against endless waves of the same enemies, in order to make fun of games that do exactly that." Gameplay-wise, it's just, like I said, the shittiest parts of Uncharted all glued together, but with some wanky 'Oh no you were the real villain' story rammed in to try and trick you into thinking that it is something deeper and more thought-provoking than your average COD clone. Nothing against you, fine sir, but I challenge you to read back 'The irony in having fun was the point' without immediately conjuring to mind the image of a game developer using the Portal gun to masturbate directly into their own face.
