The bit about how somebody had to model and animate the horse "plops" reminded me about how some poor guy was so excited to be working on Thor Ragnorok only to come in one day and be told he's animating the Hulk's ass.

Yeah and so much of it is pointless too. Okay so I can vaguely realistically skin animals then I have to manually put their skin on my horse. And then I have to manually go pick up the animal and put it on the back of my horse. Where magical ropes will appear and tie around it. I also just have infinite rope and can carry a mountain of weaponry. Because it's the most realistic game ever. But also not. But it is and therefore it's the best game! I really appreciate Yahtzee's reviews. They're not bothered with over-emphasizing if he likes the game or not. He has a great ability to describe certain elements of a game very well, and that's impressive to me. Even his jokes aren't always there for their own sake, they help to get his points across. I really do get something out of these that I won't get anywhere else.

I had a similar feeling that this game had something buzzing about it when a "professional" review by one of the big companies thought it was a selling point was the horse bollocks weather physics... glad to know I wasn't being petty by noticing an unusually focus on horses taking dumps and have nuts that shrink in winter, "thank god for that because the lack of attention to such things would completely take me out of the experience".

4:07 Onwards nicely sums up my issues with this game, and really, all Rockstar games. In Rockstar games, the open world game and the game that moves the plot along are two very separate entities with very big, hard borders around each one. One is fun, organic, reactive and full of freedom. But obviously because of that, doesn't have much purpose or direction. On the other hand, the liner sections are restrictive to a frankly infuriating fault, so much so that having them be the factor that keeps open world gameplay opportunities locked makes them feel like an imposition on the rest of the game. Which is only exacerbated by the fact that Rockstar loves to tutorial-ise the everliving bollocks off of every gameplay feature in their games, and don't even give out all their unlocks in the first third of the game but rather spread them thin over the entirety of the game. And they're not even things that massively shake up the game, they're always arbitrary quality of life improvements, like being able to carry a second side arm. Unlike open world games like Breath of the Wild or The Witcher 3, where all facets of the game's content are made to work in tandem with all the others.

Zyron I have probably 100 hours in Vice City as a kid, and I never even touched a story mission. I would type in all the cheats, go on an hour long murder rampage until I was finally taken down, wake up at a hospital or police station, and do it all over again. I tried Red Dead 1 a few years ago, was enjoying the scenery, then noped the fuck out after I realized I would have to sit through an arduous cutscene, and then coral cows or follow some fuck on a horse for 20 minutes every time I wanted to do ANYTHING. And this is someone who sunk 60 hours into BotW, loving every second of it. I couldn't agree with you more. Rock Star is great at making immersive open worlds, and then they try to shove in a well-written novel with a crowbar. It fucking SUCKS.

RDR2 does feel like it's pulling me in two separate directions, even more than in other Rockstar games. On one hand, it's the "immersion" where you're not at the mercy of an NPC all the time, where you can go where you want to, and just admire the scenery and the details. Then there are the story missions, which don't only hold your hand, but they keep you in a stranglehold. It's often painful how little freedom or agency you have when you play them. Often you can't even stray away for 10 meters by accident without it failing the mission (even RDR1 was better in that regard). And whatever is happening, an NPC always tells you what to do, always bothering you like a nagging wife. If you don't do something in 1 second, they'll bitch at you immediately. The game might even change my weapons for me, because why not, everything else is decided for you already, and there's nothing really in there but a movie that pretends to be a game every now and then when you have to shoot 30 people from behind a cover. I got some horrible The Order 1886 flashbacks where the game just had to pretend that a cutscene is somehow playable, and the pretense only ruined the immersion further. The story itself is alright, the voice acting is very good and there's lot to like, but damned if the game isn't kicking itself - and my immersion - in the balls by being two entirely different games at once. They're like opposing forces. I like RDR2, because some things are just so damn well executed, but I don't like it as a game. I like it more as some weird relaxing digital walkabout in some pretty forest, and sometimes as a story, but as a game it's awfully conflicted.

Completely agree. I'm glad someone talks about this. Latest Rockstar games are always divided in two - extrém linear handholding story missions and impressive but aimless worlds. It's interesting how that completely differs from Ubisoft's open world philosophy of creating "experience playgrounds" in which player is free to play as they want. Rockstar=great writing and craftsmanship Ubisoft=great gameplay

I think it's the oft-debated balance of gameplay vs immersion. Some games are very obviously "video gamey" for lack of a better word, but are a blast to play. Others are immersive and interactive as hell, but have mechanics based in realism that might detract from the gameplay experience for some. Whether any game does both excellently is a matter of opinion.

Meh... it's not that good. Great presentation, but stupid and irritating gameplay. How about 10 body hits to a single bad guy and they get back up and get a head shot? How about a kick attack that doesn't knock down? How about spotty collision detection that allows a bad guy to stand slightly above you while every round you have goes straight through him? Ultimately there's just too many faults. Even the story is so forgettable as it's completely disjointed. I got half way through and gave up.

The crunch most certainly wasn't worth it. The free from the laws of man concept doesn't mesh well at all with rockstar's mission gameplay design. Makes you dread main missions because you know you'll have zero freedom and god forbid if you try to improvise. You'll fail instantly with a very dumb reason for a fail state like: "so and so was abandoned." Really? You're telling me this big bad rootin tootin cowboy can't fend for himself for two seconds while I go loot a body or diverge from the predestined path for half a millimeter and a nano second? I thought all the hand holdy missions at the start were just tutorials and once the game progressed I would be able to choose my own method of getting the mission done. A bit like MGS V. But that time never came. And stealth in this game is so difficult to pull off. At the same time NPCs yell in close vicinity of the people we're meant to hide from. I don't know how much replay value it has either. Yeah I'm doing a second playthrough with low honor but the main missions still make you do the honorable and/or shitty thing without it affecting your honor level anyway.

I am gonna give my thanks to Yahtzee for pointing out the attention to detail that I thought about too. Indeed, people are so fascinated by it and it is impressive, but I made a comment of it on Jim Sterling's video of attention to detail that to me, that much attention is pointless unless it is for story reasons. And it makes me happy to hear that Yahtzee also see's that attention isn't really needed either.

For the sake of immersion I want as much detail as possible. It's crazy to think about all the work they put into the little things like horse poop, but it's also those little things that can suck you in and make you forget you're playing a game. This is one of the few games that actually surprised me with the level of detail, most games I wonder "will this be like real life" and the answer will be no, but with this game the answer has been yes almost every time. For example, I threw a body on my camp fire not really expecting anything to happen, but the body caught fire and the fire slowly spread until the body was burnt. Another example, an escaped convict approached me as I was riding along asking for me to shoot his shackles off, but I wanted to see what would happen if I hogtied him an brought him into town. I took him to the sheriff and he actually paid me for my trouble! This game is truly a masterpiece, I don't care what anyone says.

You can't just make "brown texture" and slap it on there. All horses sort of have different color fur so they'd have to make different color textures. Then they'd need to make sure these textures go well with the 3d properties of horse balls. Next they would put it on there and then they'd need to code it in so that it reacts to the weather system. It's not that easy honestly.

+domino2515 - Quite so, and then there would be the inevitable glitches and movement realism issues and things like that, which take a while any time they pop up... and might pop back up after a code optimization, for instance, as I understand it. Depending on how you go about it, I guess, but programmers working on a video game tend to have a lot to do, so they might not always do everything perfectly (being human, after all). In closing, I strongly agree that it's not a simple thing; in cutting-edge big budget game development, I dare say very few things are simple or quick... even small things can be deceptively time-consuming, which is why we see all the delays and/or vague release dates on things. As they said at college, these things all tend to take longer than anyone planned for.

All in all the horse going plop plop probably took up about 15 minutes of planning and 5 minutes to generate. Having played (but not beaten and still playing) this game, this review is spot on. It's really a shame too, cause like he said, the game is beautiful but it's all for naught. The crafting system is completely pointless, especially for what you have to do for it. Side missions are almost equally pointless. But I have no motivation to do any of this stuff that you can tell took a lot of effort to make. The game is just wasted effort which really puts a damper on it. 7/10 at best unfortunately. I do like this game, and there is reality. Trying to invoke Skyrim level horses won't work, and they'll slide down, and even start falling if they slide too long. Arthur can swim, though, thankfully, though "not well", so if you happen to fall into the water, you can get out, but get out soon, or you'll be fish food. Also, depending on how fat (or skinny) you are, it'll effect your stats, like in GTA San Andreas. Being overweight decreases your stamina, but raises your health, and being underweight increases stamina, but lowers health.

While GTA satirizes the modern era, RDR is going for a flipping the western on its head, showing the brutality and tragedy of what we consider the last true freedom of the new world

What he says about someone programming the plop plops reminds me of the day I noticed a butthole on a mount in another game. The first thing that popped into my head was, "Someone sat down to a computer one day and said to themselves, "I'm now going to texture this animal's asshole. I'm being paid to do this." And this was probably proceeded by several minutes of giggling and/or crying as they realized this was their actual job.

I like how watching this video then playing the game makes Arthur feel like the most generic wild west guy and a real deep character you genuinely love at the same time

I'm on chapter 3 but I've been playing the game since a week after release. All I've bene doing this whole week is hunting and getting animal-skin gear. I love it! the sum of it's parts is what makes the game for me.

I agree with everything you said about this game EXCEPT for side missions being just another way to earn money. Red Dead 2 side missions has effect on Authur and his choices which also can change the world in game so no it's not just for money like other Rockstar games.

I thought I was the only who couldn't figure out which of the talking characters on screen was the one you were controlling for the first two hours of the game.

There is an option to have the characters names appear in the subtitles. Dunno why it's off by default. Everyone does sound super similar in the beginning.

"All right, Rockstar, I know your sandbox games tend to have somewhat sprawling plots, but just give us a quick summary of RDR2, and don't be too confusing." "Well... RDR2 takes place before RDR1-" "Oh, you fucked it up already, Rockstar..."
