Talking about how goblins rarely get magic reminded me of one of the first antagonists I ever ran with my current group. He was a goblin that had gotten a hold of a magic cursed artifact, a page of an ancient demonology book that was possessed by the power of all the fiends whose true names were written on it. Though unable to use its full power due to not being able to read the text, the goblin who got it was able to call upon the power of a demon lord of fire to become a potent pyromancer, becoming known as The Flamecaller. This goblin had previously been the lowest of the low among his tribe. Smallest of the lot, malnourished and riddled with disease. He was neither charming nor clever, struggling to make the simple traps most other goblins could make with relative ease and preferring straight forward conflicts over trickery. As such, he was the whipping boy of the entire tribe, which of course bred a strong resentment within the goblin that reared its ugly head when he gained his new powers. He violently took over his tribe, sadistically burning his old tormentors alive with his magic. It did not matter if they surrendered, fell to their knees and groveled, he burned them all. Half of their number survived, though left with horrible burns and nerve damage that left them crippled. He would keep them as personal slaves for him to beat and burn at his leisure as he began conquering the surrounding goblin tribes and, eventually, human settlements. As stated before, he was not smart, and had a chip on his shoulder. He drew a lot of attention to himself very quickly, and many of his underlings were so miserable under his rule that they were more than willing to cooperate with adventurers to see him dead. As such, naturally, his rule would come to a swift end, but only after building a legion of goblins numbering in the thousands. He burned fast, but he burned bright.

I was unsure when I first saw this, but I really like this drawing now. I've always imagined the oblivion style goblins, so the ears and long nose kinda surprised me, for a minute I thought it looked like a Santa elf, but now I absolutely love it! From now on this will be how I see goblins in my games

Awesome, that's so cool, zuzumarc! You'll have to show me some of the stuff you come up with! The dagger was really fun to draw. I love thinking about what all of these creatures might build in their isolated cultures. Cheers for your kind words and for watching the video!

Can I ask: how do you layer your colour and greyscale? I struggle with that colour layer because I either lose the shading from the grey or the colour is washed out...
@ArcaneForge6 жыл бұрын
No worries. So I make sure to turn my colour layer to a "multiply" layer so that it shows through. Then, if it still looks a little washed out, I change the brightness of the greyscale layer until it feels right. I hope that makes sense?

I fell in love with goblins based on the pvc goblin and bugbear 2 pack of toys from advanced dungeons and dragons in the 80s. I feel the main draw of goblins is that, I think, they are based on our own toddlers. Maddenly frustrating and somehow so loveable at once. AJ Pickett mentioned that they may be a mutation of the hobgoblin race, and 13th Age calls bugbears "goblin giants". I'd also recommend checking out Pathfinder's We Be Goblins supplement for playing them, and a light hearted look at their community.
@theDMLair6 жыл бұрын
Scott Po Great analogy! LOL Yes, goblins are fun. I’m not familiar with 13th Age. Is that a tabletop game or computer game?
@kyliepoe62316 жыл бұрын
13th Age is a Dnd clone, made by Jonathan Tweet from 3e and Rob Heineso from 4e, it's got some very cool advanced DM tools like Icon relationships and the escalation die.
@ArcaneForge6 жыл бұрын
Haha! You're going to have me picturing murderous toddlers whenever I pit my players against these guys now!
@theDMLair6 жыл бұрын
Looked up a bit about the escalation die. It has me thinking, now... Maybe there is a cool way to incorporate that mechanic into my D&D 5e games. 😀👍
@kyliepoe62316 жыл бұрын
Heck yes, 13th Age does encourage lifting some of their mechanics if you like them. You can probably get a basic version of the core off free out there. The montage is another awesome mechanic. It's a free story telling way to play out a scene, let's say a travel montage. Then you go around the table, first player makes up a difficulty, second player describes how they dealt with it, then the next player describes another problem. Go around the table twice so everyone gets to state a problem and solve a different one. It's fun, invests the players and can create new stuff for your game.

Ah Goblins, first time I used them ended with the Barbarian on trial for putting a Gob settlement to the torch. 2 hours latter and he rode off into the sunset, Bill the Drow got kidnapped by Asmodeus, and one of the Goblins shows up in every game I run in the Forgotten realms ever since. Ok I was kinda hoping you'd get to goblins in the game I'm running for my son when they got to the city of waterdeep I'm running a half homebrew version of hoard of the dragon queen btw the players were very surprised to see Goblins out and about in public doing menial work the reason for this is the goblins Once Upon a Time try to attack the city of waterdeep but we're partially annihilated by the five Lords of waterdeep and ever since that time they have been trying to pay back the damage they did by doing menial service in and around the town which lead to some hilarious NPC player interactions the whole idea behind that was it's not just the big bad that get the opportunity to use these things as they mindless underlings poor goblins
@theDMLair6 жыл бұрын
telenNG hey, that’s a great concept right there! Nice. I use Waterdeep as the hub for two of my games, but I never thought of doing something like that. I’ll bet it greatly increases the role-play opportunities and a feeling of immersion. Gives things more life than just another ho-hum humanoid city. :D

I am loving this series so much and have binge watched most of it in one night (sick and can't sleep.) I am in love with this channel and just wanted to suggest a Doppelganger and/or Mimic for your next drawing. I have always been a huge fan of John Carpenters "The Thing" and I am running a campaign pretty soon where the main threat is a Doppelganger army. Well enough rambling I love your work man and I will be back every week regardless what you draw, stay awesome.

Hey, EsLocoSoldado! I'm sorry you're feeling unwell, but I'm glad that you're enjoying the channel! Make sure to get plenty of rest and a healing spell of at least 3rd level or higher. I'm pretty sure that Dopplegangers and mimics are somewhere on my "to draw" list, but if they've not been suggested, I'll 100% put them on there for you! Your adventure sounds really great, so let me know how it goes! Cheer for watching and for the support. Get well soon!

I think one thing that makes Goblins more likeable than Kobolds is that goblins overall feel like they have more personality. Compared to Kobolds (who are very group-oriented creatures) goblins feel more like individuals. Some of the best scenes in the Lord of the Rings are not when the heroes are fighting goblins but when the goblins are fighting each other.

I love Goblins. One of my Charakters is a Goblin Barbarian called NaCk McFeegle (yes inspired by Terry Pratchett) and he is a Barbarian with the Path of the Ancestor. His Body is tattooed so much that his skin seems to be blue and whenever my DM asks me how I want to do this (granted its not very often the Dice don't really fall in my favour that much) he breaks the knees and then Snaps the neck. He is a super cheery dude.
