Monster Nebraska Rainbow Trout!! (Cross Country Road Trip)

Where to even begin with this one... After saying yes to a trip out to Breckenridge, I was checking out a map for the driving route and stumbled upon Ogallala Lake right off of 80 in Nebraska. There wasn't much info there and hardly any videos filmed but I had a great feeling about the spot. I set my sites for a stop there and after a full 16 hour day driving out I was rewarded with a monster rainbow trout. I hope you enjoy the video and excuse all of the "Oh My God's" lol

Welcome to Nebraska! Just one tip: when releasing a fish, always point it upstream so the water can flow over the gills in the right direction. When the fish is pointed downstream, the water flows over the gills in the wrong direction and the fish can't take the oxygen out of the water to breathe. Great fish though!

Thank you! I normally try to release them like that, doesn’t mean it always goes according to plan haha also sometimes the current is just too strong and you gotta do what you gotta do to get them back in. Thanks for watching 🙌🏼

Thank you man! I couldnt believe the size of it when I saw it or the fact that I was able to get it in on the 3wt. I think for me the biggest thing that started getting me bites was playing with my split shot amount and placement. It gets very deep quite quick so I hiked my indicator to the top of my leader and used heavy flies plus split to get it down deep. Beyond that I think it was a lot of luck and spending time in the strike zone! Hope you find that same fish!

I’m curious, how’d you find out about the river? Someone from Ohio going to Colorado wouldn’t think of stopping back there. Here’s another tip, the canal is better.

I did a good bit of research for spots in between and with it being right off of 80 it was an easy fit in to do some fishing! Thanks for the tip, if I go back I’ll give it a shot!

If you fish a similar area to where I was in the video then im sure you could do well throwing inline spinners or rooster tails through the current. I guess it depends if you're doing fly or spin fishing but there are definitely some great trout in there!

did you try anything other than the beaded nymphs? I'm just getting into fly fishing and planning on hitting that spillway this spring

i just had to rewatch to try to remember what flies i switched around between but i believe beaded scuds and nymphs were what got the job done. i would definitely fish a squirmy wormy if i were to go again so pack some of those! and bring nice and light line.

A lot of the times it’s less to do with the flies and more to do with the depth and line you’re drifting. Try moving your indicator up and putting some split on to fish deeper. I never found the bottom there so I know it’s very deep 👍🏼
