Now would there be times that I would have to take a longer test drive to experience the problem that the customer was having indeed that has been the case. Although this was stated to the customer up front. And yes there are bad shop's out there, yet they don't normally get vehicles like Nick gets.

Hi Nick, it looks like you still have the vaccum cap on the distributer, you may need to take it off. If there is advance weights in that distributer by leaving the rubber plug on the vaccum canister it will hold the advance mechanism from working like it should. Ran into this problem years ago on my friends small block chevy. And from the looks of all the backfiring through the carburator the distributer is not advancing Fast Enough causing the backfire. Hope this helps.

That engine should be making way more power! I've never had good luck with the zinc metering blocks on dominators, I've always had to use billet aluminum metering blocks to smooth em out. Also the power valve is blown almost certainly. Wonder what the vacuum is? Maybe that carb is in need of a rebuild and some new parts? That should free up some ponies..overheating issues? Overbored? Or disimiliar metal heating at heads? Also a phenolic plenum spacer may help, and possibly some sort of velocity stack too? I'm wondering what output heat range the engine make most it's power at? Bigger radiator? Some of my best power producing engines were Frankensteins, made up of used parts.

There is an air leak in the intake tract. For it to backfire with the timing backed off, with the main boosters being augmented by massive pull over from the primary squirters, and some flow from the secondary squirters, and with those heads, it should both be well clear of 600, and not pop back AT ALL. The air leak is also what is causing the temp to rise so quickly. Check your egt and you will see what I mean. Tipped in to start the power run, the primary squirters are almost all done, the power valves (if you have them) are wide open and the mixture is still too lean That's why it can't transition smoothly from being unloaded to loaded. The squirters aren't supposed to add fuel because of airflow. You need the anti-pullover parts to solve that problem. Yes there is a narrower range of nozzle sizes with those, but you can't tune the fuel curve if fuel is coming from places it isn't supposed to. And since it is a race car you can open them up with a drill to 37, 39 or 40 if you have to. Which squirter cam? That is an old dominator, you may need the newer 3 circuit style. It ACTED LIKE the carb was too big (unresponsive to small throttle openings) because the accelerator pumps can't overcome the air leak. It is like a port in the throttle plate which should be closed is wide open. 1050 cfm should not be too much for it. PN 80903BK. Yes it IS almost $900 but it is on sale, down from 1,200+. Those heads flow nearly 400 straight out of the box, zero porting. Also pls check the lash, if it is too tight, it can do that, as well.

In the slo-mo, the backfire was orignating in #2 or #4 (driver's side primary). Always the same each time. No fire from the "passenger side" secondary venturi at all. The power peak should be 6200 or more with those heads. Those 5302 hookers are about as good a header as you can find for it. A Little Bit too long but just a scosh. Hi Nick! I think there is something wrong with Frankenstein.... bad fuel management at low R.P.M...it may also have a tight piston or two. It might explain the high temps. Excessive C.F.M. in the mid range is narrowing the power band. Try an 850 Holley, it might be better. Alex G. 🤓

Alex. I know. Just trying it out for the customer who bought it with the engine in pieces. Too big and needs overhauling. Going with an 850 CFM.

You might need to play with the cam timing, header size and carb size. It sounds a bit grumpy for such low power output. I had a 383 SBC that made that much power NA.

Carb is obviously a problem, nice feature with camera taking video. Soon as Nick kicked base timing up started to backfire into intake track either distributor advance mechanism is off or adjusted wrong or I'M wondering a tight intake valve. I'm also surprised there is no vacuum gauge hooked up? Idle is off, rough.

Normally lowering compression by increasing the Quench distance causes bad detonation and causes an engine to run hot, keep the tight Quench and increase the fuel quality, 94 is not enough

Seems odd to me that a 440 built like that (or any 440) would make more HP than torque. But I'm sure the green monster will be happy once more after some surgery in Dr. Nick's operating room 🤒

bad. We are not done with this engine yet.

What do they grow out there?

Nick did you sort it out ? Those B1 heads are very capable of high hp numbers and if it's drag engine that carb wouldn't be too far off once it's set up and sorted out. I ran a 1050 on a old TM7 manifold 446 cid 11.6 to 1 with a mild solid cam and box stock Eddie RPM performer heads and managed to do 10.50s in 1/4 so I don't a 1000 cfms on drag engine is too crazy. our current set up is 522 cid with 12 to 1 same box stock heads 300 int 313 ex 570 lift with a old school weiand tunnel ram with EFI on it we managed to 580 hp to the rear wheels with a ET of 9.72 at 137 mph. I am thinking those heads are lot better than we are running you should easily hit your power goal with a little fine tuning. My drag car is odd one a 2710 lb with driver Mustang powered by a Mopar engine hooked to a powerglide. Like your videos just was wondering if you had a update on this engine.

Its sucking fuel out of the primary accelerator pump nozzle. A ball on top of the check valve might hold it down. Either that or an anti-pullover nozzle.
