We swing for the fences. When I guide I take clients to tried and true areas that guarantee fish. When I fish for myself I gamble with spots and temps. It can be big risk, but can have big rewards.

I have a place on Lake Ontario . I have been fishing for these fish since 1976 . I have never seen the amount of kings we had this summer . We had 25 and 30 hit mornings with multiple doubles and some triples . Sometimes it was hard to keep the rods in the water . Dont expect it to be as good next year . But i hope it is 😊

I expect it to be better and then drop off the year after. I beleive these are covid fish.

I think it was an increase in stocking because an increase in baitfish biomass and great natural reproduction year . But who knows ?

Now this is the type of fishing I wish I was having on Lake O. Started trolling in late July and I can see how far we are from being as dialed in as you guys were. No wonder you were hitting all the salmon. That teamwork was awesome. It sucks losing fish but sucks losing gear more. Hopefully you guys figure out how to keep them on your lines!

Appreciate the comment and kinds words. We lost a lot of gear this day! We are still learning. Always improving. Just when you think you have them figured out, they change everything and your back to the drawing board lol.

Maybe try single siwash style hooks as well? I think it can be a game changer with the right size. The fish won't be able to use other hooks as leverage unlike trebles.

I agree!! I think i am going to run a tournament rig with a 4/0 siwash up front follow by a treble. I think that will help a lot! Thanks for the suggestion!

Wanted to but ran out of time. Had a few bass tournaments to prefish and occupied all my time.

Run the release tighter. Will help poke them when they bite instead of just slack lining.

This. And don’t load the rod so much. Load it down and yank two feet of drag and let it ride. Also Leave it in the rod holder when they bite the rigger rod, just crank all the way down onto the fish before getting it from the rod holder.

Just 50 feet of flourocarbon and a spoon.

Are the treble hooks a wide gap or has it closed up a bit? What i like to do is take each hook and grab them with a pair of pliers and bend them offset just a tad so the hook isn't inline with the shank, i will also bend them out just a tad to help them stick in the mouths, these salmonids have hard mouths and we need every advantage we can get
@FoxFishing4K
@FoxFishing4K 5 ай бұрын
Smart idea. These were 2x tournament hooks. I like the suggestion you had about offsetting. Many siwash hooks are like that.

Any issues with having your riggers on the sport trac? Flex? Or stress on the mount/track? Thanks
@FoxFishing4K
@FoxFishing4K 3 ай бұрын
It's my buddies boat and he has not had any issues so far. That being said he runs lighter cannon balls with a slower retrieve rigger. 20lb cannon balls could be a different story.

I find them preety stiff. I like my Taloras. I find the extra bend helps keep fish pinned.

Looks like your setting it to hard on them. Couple nice quick reels and they’re hooked. Almost looks like your ripping it out of their mouths when your setting it that hard. Just my thought though cheers !
@FoxFishing4K

It's possible! Usually, they are hooked on the initial bite. I started to do bigger hook sets in hoping to hook some better. But like you said maybe they were skin hooked and I was just pulling the hooks out?? Who knows. I do know I will be running tournament style meat rigs from now on! 😂

One of the things I find so interesting is that I NEVER hear any of these salmon trollers talking about sharpening the hooks on their baits (spoons, flies, or meat rigs). I am a 40 year muskie/pike guy (12 as a guide), and we hone our hooks until they are absolutely needle sharp. Every single bait; every single hook. When you set the hook (or they hook themselves when trolling), those hooks really BITE. I am about to try my hand at salmon trolling, and I want to see how this philosophy will impact my hook-up ratios.

I sharpen all my hooks. I keep a hook file in my bag. I wish that was the case.
@GARYDefilipps

I sharpen my hooks a lot . I also set my releases tight so the fish sets the hook himself in the hit . And I use good hooks . But there are days I can't keep them on the hook . I figure they are just nipping at the lure . Good luck
