Superheroes may rule the box office but as far as genres go, they don’t even hold a candle to true crime stories. There’s a sea of true crime podcasts amateur sleuthing unsolved cases or cases whe the facts are in dispute. Everyone is chasing that Sarah Kailan or Michelle McNamara success. One of the more popular sub genres of true crime is serial killers. Their motives are generally unfathomable, their deeds are disturbing, they attract our need to figure things out without ever really actually reaching that goal. Since the FBI started a serial crime division in the late seventies there was a heightened interest in serial killers as the term moved out of obscurity to a morbid fascination with serial killers. One of the best known serial killers is Milwaukee based Jeffrey Dahmer. By the time he was caught he had ended the life of seventeen young men and in one case a child. Dahmer focused his killings on the gay community most often black and hispanic victims. With the cultural climate of the 80s when Dahmer operated it made it difficult to even find someone who would take the complaint seriously. American Horror Story has taken company regular Evan Peters to tell the stories surrounding Dahmer and highlighting how frequently Dahmer escaped capture. Like most things based on true stories Monster The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is both eerily accurate and wildly inaccurate depending on what the story needs. What was your favorite part of the series? A masterpiece despite the understandable uncomfortable feelings of the families of victims

"I enjoyed it so who cares if it causes the victims families pain?" - There. Rewrote your comment for you to better express your meaning. No need to thank me.

Half of the show was about the horror that Dahmer caused (but without gory visuals) and half of the show was about the victims, their families and criticism about the way this has been handled by the police. This gruesome story happened and has been talked about before (news, true crime, movies). I find this is just a new way of telling and visualising it but it’s making important points. I found them emphasising the pain he caused and how it was handled was done very tastefully and shines a light on important topics.

What do they care? They've gotta make money! So what if they do it on the backs of murder victims?

Meh. Serial killer porn is boring (why do they do it? because they're disturbed. big mystery.) and exploitative by its very nature. Claiming it "represents the victims" is just a whitewash for enjoying murder porn. People that watch it will still remember the murderers name long after they've forgotten any of the victims names.

Sometimes I wonder if the jogger ever figured out that it was him who could've been killed by Dahmer. He must've had a guardian angel that made him change his routine that day.

Calling this a masterpiece is one thing….but a love letter to the victims???? What an insensitive and silly thing to say. Especially considering that several families of the victims specifically stated that there were NOT contacted about this project, and did not want to live through the trauma again.

The only thing I missed was the final five episodes. I thought it was a six part mini, but I was wrong. There is a difference between a slow burn and just slow. This show was the latter. Just minute after minute of overly long, lingering reaction shots. So much empty space. I wonder if the whole ten episode ordeal could be edited to a Zodiac length movie without losing any significant impact.
